WHO SHOULD ATTEND The School is intended for the working custodians, maids, housekeepers, and building maintenance personnel employed by health care facilities, schools, colleges, business and industry. Those responsible for the supervision of buildings and grounds will also benefit from attending. Anyone interested in the Building Maintenance Industry and seeking training would benefit from attending. ABOUT THE SCHOOL The School has been held for many years on the ISU campus. The purpose of the school is to provide continuing education and instruction for custodians, housekeepers, boiler operators, and anyone working with building maintenance. During the school, participants can take classes in Building/Custodial Housekeeping/ Maintenance, Building Maintenance Management, Boiler Operator, Basic Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Operations, or Basic Electrical Concepts. These classes will give instruction to participants so they may take the tests and become certified in these areas. These classes will be held at the Scheman Building in the Iowa State Center on the ISU Campus. If you are interested in taking these classes, please complete the registration form and mail or email to the IABME office or register on line iabme.com Also offered is the ONE DAY SEMINAR. This one day seminar will be held at the Scheman Building, ISU, on Thursday, July 19. There will be two all attend sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. For the breakout seminars, those attending may choose one of three topics they wish to attend in the morning and one of the three topics they wish to attend in the afternoon. Presenters may have exhibit tables set up for viewing during breaks and at the end of the day. Read further for information on classes and the one day seminar. CERTIFICATION CLASSES Full week classes include Building/Custodial Housekeeping/ Maintenance, Building Maintenance Management, Boiler Operator, Basic Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Operations, Basic Electrical Concepts. Please specify on the registration form which class you intend to enroll in. Only one class can be taken during the week as they run concurrently. Minimum class size is 6students. If a class is less than 6, IABME Board Members will determine whether to continue with or cancel the class and persons registered will be given the option of a refund or another class. We strongly urge registrations be in the IABME office by July 10, but will be accepted after that if classes are not full. Exams covering all the classes offered during the week will be given Friday morning July 20, beginning promptly at 7:30. Exam fees for all classes is included in the registration fee. If you plan to take the exam on Friday, July 20 to be certified, you must fill out the application form by 3:00 PM Thursday, July 19. INSTRUCTORS AND SPEAKERS All of the instructors for the Custodian-Maintenance School are qualified by education and/or experience to meet the requirements for vocational instructors. The speakers/presentations listed for the one-day seminars will be presented by professional people working in the area related to the subject, but their presentations are required to be non-commercial. 2018 IABME CLASSES 1. BUILDING/CUSTODIAL HOUSEKEEPING/MAINTENANCE This course intends to provide students with knowledge for housekeeping and custodial services along with some basic maintenance in a health care facility, school and public building. Objectives covered are responsibilities of housekeeping personnel, cleaning and inspection of resident rooms, class rooms and public areas of buildings. The course will focus on proper chemical usage, understanding dwell times for disinfectants and the ph scale, housekeeping s role in facility infection control plans, general knowledge of life safety issues and regulatory code compliance to enable student to identify issues and be able to report them to management, carpet care and housekeeping s role in maintaining facility indoor air quality and hospitality to make your program stand out. You will also learn several aspects of building and grounds upkeep, including several areas of fire safety, OSHA, and electrical safety. New class. This class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday students will attend seminars. Course time is 24(plus) hours. Instructor : Todd Smith & Heartland Paper 2. BUILDING MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT This class will introduce you to strategies and procedures for planning, implementing and evaluating an effective building maintenance program. Content of this class will include: *facilities maintenance planning *facilities audits (knowing what you have) *providing a safe environment *maintenance of institutional facilities *preventative building maintenance *use of maintenance forms and checklists *effectively managing staff and contractors *evaluating facilities maintenance efforts. The materials used in this class will assist you in developing or enhancing an effective building maintenance program and will be beneficial to any person involved in the building maintenance field. Classes will be held Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday, with no class on Thursday so students may attend the seminars. (This day is included in the full week fee.) Course time is 24 (plus) hours. Instructor : Jim Behrens 3. BOILER OPERATOR 4. BASIC AIR CONDITIONING AND HEAT PUMP OPERATIONS This class will introduce the participants to the basics of refrigeration and air conditioning concepts, as well as heat pump operation. System components and proper preventive maintenance procedures will be presented so that each student will be able to safely and efficiently operate and maintain a refrigeration, air conditioning, or heat pump system. This class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. No class on Thursday so students can attend the seminars (included in full week fee). Class time is 24 (plus) hours. Instructor: Randy Lowe 5. BASIC ELECTRICAL CONCEPTS This class will introduce the student to an understanding of electricity and the basics of working with electricity. Electrical safety and the National Electric Code will be stressed. This class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. No class on Thursday so students can attend the seminar. (This day is included in full week fee.) Course time is 24 (plus) hours. Plenty of hands-on activity. Instructor : Jim Oberle A comprehensive program covering basic boiler room operation. This course is designed to expose the attendees to how boilers are constructed, what support systems are required, how they operate and why. Another aspect is the focus on the importance of teamwork and how it can relate to the boiler room operation in order to maximize operational efficiencies. LOCATION The annual Custodian-Maintenance School, full week classes and the Thursday one day seminars will be held in the Scheman Building in the Iowa State Center on the campus of the Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. The Scheman Building is at the corner of Lincoln Way and University Boulevard on the ISU campus. See map on page 6. REGISTRATION AND FEES We strongly encourage early registration. The registration fee for the full week classes is $450.00. This fee includes hand-out materials, books and exam fee and lunch on Thursday at the Scheman Building. The fee also includes attendance at the one day seminar on Thursday, July 19. By registering by July 6th, rates will be reduced to $420.00 for the week long classes. Payment must be received by the first day of classes. The registration fee for the one day seminar is $125.00. This fee includes hand-out materials, and lunch.
