Waverly Central Schools Back-to-School 2017 News Learning Commons Construction on Track for Opening Of School In May 2016, the Waverly community voted to approve a significant upgrade to the secondary school s library, which was designed and constructed in 1967. It is hard to believe that the library that was so modern at the time is now fifty years old and quite outdated. The transition from a card catalog system with stacks of books on fixed shelves to a vibrant, dynamic learning center supported by the latest technology is not only something to behold, but also is a resource designed to support instruction and student learning. The construction of the Learning Commons is on schedule and it should be completed prior to the opening of school. A great deal of work remains to furnish and equip the area for technology. When completed, we will schedule an open house to provide more information regarding the future availability for use by residents of the greater Waverly community. Upper right, numerous skylights will fill the Learning Commons with an abundance of natural light. Above, a glass-walled computer lab will be situated at the east end of the space. Right, a work space in the Intermediate/Middle School side of the Commons features a curved wall.

4 Lincoln Street School Back-to-School Events Pre-K: Friday, September 1 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Kindergarten and First Grade: Tuesday, September 5 5:00-6:00 p.m. A general session for all families will begin in the cafeteria at 5:00, followed by visits to classrooms. Lincoln Street School News Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! I am so excited to begin the new school year with each of you. Lincoln Street Elementary has been busy this summer with summer school, professional development for our teachers and a great deal of planning to prepare for the new school year. Summer school was a huge success, with students participating in 15 days focused on literacy and math. Students were given the opportunity to reinforce, review and learn skills necessary for the next grade level. Our summer school teachers, Shari Knight, Tammy Schrader and Jessica Kittle designed the curriculum to be engaging and interesting for students. We have some changes this year that we wanted to share with our families. Back-to-School events Our Back-to-School events are an opportunity for families to visit classrooms, meet teachers, hear about your child s school day and what he/she will learn throughout the school year. During the events, families will be asked to sign in. On this form, families also have the opportunity to provide an email address which will add them to a distribution list. I will use this distribution list to email families The Week Ahead. This weekly email will include a brief overview of events, activities and learning that will take place for the upcoming week. Pre-K orientation is scheduled for Friday, September 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Families with students in kindergarten and first grade are invited to attend Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 5 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. We will begin with a general session in the cafeteria at 5:00, followed by time in your child s classroom to meet his/her teacher and set up cubbies/desks. Arrival/dismissal times Arrival Begins 7:35 a.m. Instruction Begins 7:50 a.m.* *Students arriving after 7:50 a.m. will be considered tardy Dismissal 2:05-2:15 p.m. New programs Teachers at Lincoln Street will implement some new programs this year. Kindergarten and first-grade teachers will be consistent in the use of Guided Reading. Guided Reading provides direct reading instruction to students in small groups. Reading groups are based on students skill level and ability to read. Additionally, students in need of intervention will receive instruction using the Leveled Literacy Intervention program. Intervention will be provided in small groups with students at the same literacy level. The LLI program is very structured and research-based and will provide significant support to our early readers. Lincoln Street School received two grants in May/June and students will experience the benefits of this work this year. The first grant was provided by Forester s Financial Group and with the grant money we have been able to create I Can Learn kits. These kits have manipulatives and resources for parents to work with their children at home. Each classroom will receive six to seven kits which will be sent home on a rotating basis for one week at a time. Within the bag is a card describing how families can work with their child to reinforce literacy and math skills. The other grant was provided by Lowes and with this money we have been able to purchase hands-on materials including coding resources for our students. New programs There are several new and exciting programs for the 2017-18 school year. Students in PreK through fourth grade will receive one Elm Street School FREE breakfast and Back-to-School Night one FREE lunch each day. If your student Tuesday, September 5 prefers to pack a 6:00-7:00 p.m. lunch, a side kick option, including veggie sticks and dip, fruit and milk is available. Another exciting endeavor for the new school year will be the implementation of the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. This new assessment tool will help to determine a student s independent and instructional reading levels. More information will coming home with the students as the year progresses. 6 Intermediate/Middle School Back-to-School Events on Wednesday, August 30 Grades 5-6: 4:00-5:00 p.m. Grades 7-8: 5:00-6:00 p.m. A Message for Parents of Middle/ Intermediate School Students We hope your summer was filled with fun and relaxation and you all are looking forward to the 2017-18 school year as much as we are. It will be a time of great change and excitement as we move into our upcoming school year with new schedules. The intermediate program for our students in grades 5-6 will include 60-minute math and ELA blocks, 45-minute social studies and science blocks, along with special area classes and an exciting enrichment period. We are hoping to have a smooth transition by having buses drop off students in the front loop and by dismissing fifth- and sixth-grade students five minutes earlier (2:25 p.m.) than other students. Students in grades 7-8 will follow a nine period schedule that more closely correlates with the High School schedule. All students in seventh and eighth grade will have an opportunity to take their core classes while also enjoying electives such as art, music, health and technology. Eighth-grade students also will take Spanish for a High School credit. All students will be given an opportunity to have intervention or enrichment on a daily basis. As a middle school, we are constantly looking for ways to build on our mission: Inspire. Educate. Learn. Succeed. Grow. These are words you will hear frequently during the school year. We also are in the process of creating Intermediate and Middle School goals that align with important qualities to help all students succeed. Additionally, one of our goals this year is to create more parent and student involvement in Waverly Schools. In closing, we look forward to an exciting and successful school year for all students. A Message for High School Students Opening day will be here soon! We hope you are enjoying the summer and will find this upcoming year to be a time of new opportunities and experiences resulting in your most successful school year yet. Please take a moment to read this important information. High School classes and all BOCES programs for students in grades 9-12 begin on Wednesday, September 6. Students should arrive by 7:50 a.m., and will report promptly to first period by 7:55 a.m. In your first period class you will receive your final schedule (on colored paper), a schedule change form (on colored paper), your locker assignment/ combination printed on your schedule, a locker repair form and a 2017-18 student handbook. For the 2017-18 school year, we will continue to follow a traditional schedule consisting of nine 40-minute periods each. Each school day is an A or B day. There are four minutes between periods for transition. Please make every effort to be on time to school and to all your classes every day. All students driving to school may park in rows 3 and 4 of the front parking lot. These cars must be registered with Mrs. Hughes in the main office. Parking passes will be issued during the first week of school. There is NO student parking permitted in rows 1 or 2 of the front lot, or in the back lot of the High School. The bus loop is open to buses only from 7:15-8:00 a.m. and again from 2:00-2:50 p.m. Parents can drop off or pick up students in the lot located off Wilbur Street/Hospital Place (the former bus transfer lot) before and after school. For safety purposes, students cannot be dropped off or picked up in the bus loop or front parking lot during these times. Please review the Waverly Central School District s Code of Conduct (available on the website under school board information/ policies) and note the student dress code requirements for appropriate clothing and footwear. Class meetings will be scheduled during the first week of school. Each grade level will review school and district policies and students and staff will have an opportunity to define goals and expectations of all high school students. Twelfth-graders also will receive information regarding senior privileges during their class meeting. As you prepare for the upcoming school year, it is our hope that you will consider becoming involved in some of the many extracurricular activities offered. There are many activities, clubs and sports that will help you make friends, meet new people and promote your success in a variety of areas. It is our goal to make your high school experience as rewarding and successful as possible. It is your job to get involved and take advantage of the incredible opportunities that await you. 8 Important Transportation Information Welcome to the start of the 2017-18 school year! Your child s safety to and from school will continue to be our number one priority. On Wednesday, September 6, buses will begin transporting your child(ren) to his/her/their school. Please allow a five minute window in both the morning and afternoon as we solidify the bus runs. Your child(ren) should be outside in a safe, visible location as he/she/they wait for the bus. Do not hesitate to contact Randy Benjamin, transportation supervisor, at 607-565-8114, with questions that aren t answered below. This year, all students will get on and off their bus daily where they attend school. There will be no transfers at the High School as a result of this new system. There will still be a pick up and drop off at Chemung School for Chemung students who rode to and from the site in previous years. The pick up and drop off on Main and Washington Streets (bus hut by the fire station) will remain the same. Students will be picked up at approximately 7:05 a.m. at Chemung School and at 7:10 a.m. at the hut by the fire station. A Message from the Interim Superintendent Dear Parents, I know that I speak for our entire faculty and staff when I say that we are so happy and excited to have your children in school with us as either returning students or students entering our school district for the first time. I hope this newsletter provides you with a few highlights from our work this summer. Students at Lincoln Street and Elm Street schools will be using a guided reading program intended to strengthen reading and writing skills. In addition to emphasizing these skills, your children will be expected to apply and analyze information more thoroughly. Students in the Intermediate and Middle Schools will continue to analyze and evaluate information with a greater importance placed on appropriate school citizenship through our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program. Students at the High School will be engaged in rigorous activities and curriculum that will provide them with opportunities for advanced course work and vocational training. These activities will help them build toward either meaningful employment or attendance at college upon graduation. My focus is for each of us principals, teachers, support staff and you is to work together effectively to make a significant difference in educating our children. Together, we can do this.
