From Cherie Barth Wow, another school year is coming to an end and the Beta Gamma Epsilon chapter sure did accomplish many good things this past year! We have so much to be proud of and look forward to another spectacular year in 2016-17. Your new officer team and I will be meeting and begin plans for the next school year, as well as set our chapter goals. Over the summer we will have a couple of activities scheduled that you won t want to miss. Keep your eyes open for event announcements in future issues of the Bugle and on ANGEL.. I would like to extend my congratulations to our new 2016-17 inductees all 131 of you! We had a wonderful formal induction ceremony which was shared with family, friends, faculty and staff. Also, my sincere congratulations goes out to our Beta Gamma Epsilon graduates. Best of luck to all of you as you begin the next chapter in your lives. Do remember that you are always a member of our chapter and are more than welcome to continue attending our chapter activities, events, and meetings. Have a great summer take time to relax and rejuvenate!!

From Dave Sigmund Greetings Beta Gamma Epsilon, As you may or may not know, The Ohio Phi Theta Kappa specialty license plate has gone on sale as of June 8, 2015. The license plate costs $35.00 more than your regular set of plates and $25.00 of that money goes to the Ohio Region Commit to Complete Scholarship. To get your plate, I have listed the information below: The plate can be purchased for any private vehicle excluding motorcycles. If you wish to purchase the plate, all you have to do is go to your local BMV. This can be done at the time of your birthday or sooner if you do not want to wait. To get the plate mid-year, just tell the BMV that you desire the Phi Theta Kappa plate and they will assist you. You will have to pay the additional $35.00 plus a $15.00 one-time fee to get a new set of plates. The $15.00 is the normal fee anytime you want to replace an old set. You will then receive a temporary tag until your new plates come in the mail; about a week. If you wish to buy the plate online at the time of your birthday (not trading in) go to www.oplates.com and follow these instructions: Click on special plate availability Check passenger car and hit continue Scroll down until you see the Phi Theta Kappa plate and select it Click continue Select the option from the specialty plate availability (stock plate number or specialty) and hit continue Finish the check-out procedure Enjoy your new Phi Theta Kappa license plates! If you have any questions, feel free to email me at: dsigmund@starkstate.edu.

From Rebecca (Becky) Race, President Hello Everyone, Well, the semester is winding down and spring has finally sprung, at least I hope it has anyway. This is the last newsletter article from me as your President, so I want it to be a good one. I hope your semester is going well and your grades are even better! In regards to Nerd Nation, we had two advisors, one alumni, one member, two incoming officers, and four officers attend the International Convention from April 5 th thru the 9 th. You can definitely say we had a van full of bodies and luggage. It gave me so much pleasure to see the look on the faces of the first time attendees at the opening General Session. I remember my first one and all the emotions and pride I felt, so seeing it in others gave me tremendous pleasure. Unfortunately, we didn t win any awards this year but we still had a wonderful time in National Harbor, MD. We took a tour of some of the monuments in Washington, DC. We also learned some interesting facts about how our Nation s Capital came to be where it is and how it is today. Our speakers were fabulous, funny, and informative. The educational forums were incredible and just wait until we are able to implement some of these ideas at the meetings! I believe we had a little more than 3,800 members present at the convention this year. I certainly hope you will consider attending one of the International Conventions in the future. As I have always stated, there just isn t words to describe this convention, you have to experience it. We will be printing out pictures for our picture albums, so please come to a meeting to see the pictures and go to ptk.org and view the ones online taken by headquarters. We have several events coming up that you are cordially invited to participate in. We have the Honors Program night on Tuesday, April 19 th, the Spring Fling on May 5 th, and we are working on the Honors in Action project already. You don t have to give up several hours, just one or maybe two if it is possible. Think about how great it will look on your resume when you interview for that great job you ve always wanted. Good luck to everyone in their future endeavors. I will still be around, just not in uniform. If you ever have a question I can help you with, please ask away. My email is rrace0729@starkstate.net and I am always available to you. It has been a pleasure serving Beta Gamma Epsilon for Phi Theta Kappa. Have a great summer! Your Outgoing President, Rebecca Race

From Krystal Nash, President Letter from the President: Greetings fellow Phi Theta Kappans! Congratulations on surviving Spring Semester 2016! I hope everyone had a great semester and did well on their finals. First, I would like to take a second to congratulate all of our new inductees. I was truly proud to be a part of your induction ceremony. A whole new world of opportunities has just been opened to you by becoming a member of Phi Theta Kappa. You will grow in ways you never thought you could. Make the most of your time as an active member. It was a very special induction ceremony this year, as we were able to induct Cherie Barth, our fearless leader, as an honorary member of our chapter. Special thanks go out to Dave Sigmund and Julie Sproul for spearheading this excellent surprise. The 2016-2017 Officer Team had our meeting earlier this month, and I am truly excited about some of the things we are in the works of planning and/or changing. Starting in June, our regular member meetings will be from 12:00 p.m. to approximately 1:30 p.m., and committee meetings will follow immediately afterwards from 1:30-2:00 p.m. We ve decided this is the best way to get committees meeting on a regular basis, as our meetings have ran about 12:00 2:00 p.m. the past year. Whether you re signed up for a committee or not, feel free to pick a committee and sit in on its meeting to see if you think you d like to be involved. The number of committees right now are small, but there will be plenty more to choose from once Fall Semester hits. As an officer team, we would like to increase our members knowledge of some of the great online tools being a member of Phi Theta Kappa provides you, particularly College Fish and Competitive Edge. Not sure what these are or how they can help you? During Committee Meeting time, take a walk down to the computer lab down the hall from our meeting room, and one of our officers will be there to help you get started on the process. You ll be glad you did it! In the next few months, we will be participating in Relay for Life, as well as attending the Ohio Honors in Action conference at Lakeland Community College, and our annual Family Picnic at Clay s Park. There are also in the works plans for some fun fellowship activities, including an Akron Rubber Ducks game and a movie night. We also will be working on our College Project and Honors in Action projects. I look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces at our next meeting, June 18, 2016. Remember, you are only going to get out of Phi Theta Kappa what you put into it. Take a chance; get involved and join a committee. Trust me, it s a worthwhile investment. Krystal Nash, President

Phi Theta Kappa Annual Convention 2016 From Alyssa Goodwin From Victoria Allen Nerd Nation 2016 was amazing, it was more than I could have ever imagined. I joined Phi Theta Kappa in June 2015, from the first day everyone told me I needed to go to Nerd Nation. I took their advice and went to my first Nerd Nation. I was blown away by how nice and welcoming everyone was. There are no words to describe how my confidence grew during my time at Nerd Nation. I learned what it was to truly be a member of Phi Theta Kappa. I encourage every member to experience a Nerd Nation for themselves. Alyssa Goodwin Beta Gamma Epsilon Treasurer I had a blast at the International Convention and the Academy. I liked how everyone came together from all parts of the country and from other countries. Seeing participants earn their awards and the candidates run for International offices. Everyone was very nice. I also enjoyed exploring the historic monuments and offices at Washington D.C. I am getting a deep understanding of how Phi Theta Kappa operates and what they offer. This trip was exciting and amazing. Victoria Allen Beta Gamma Epsilon Newsletter Editor

This year I took a path not many people travel: The Road to Running for International Office. Thanks to encouragement and prodding by some amazing people, I decided to undertake the task of running for Division I International Vice President. It really was an incredible, unforgettable experience. There were a total of 37 candidates for all of the positions; the largest International Officer Candidate class ever. I ran against six other people for Division I VP. We did a really fun icebreaker of Rock, Paper, Scissors battles to have a chance to mingle. The ever amazing Onjalai Flake and her assistant Bernard Akem were so incredibly helpful during the entire process, always willing to answer any questions from the candidates. NerdNation on its own is an indescribable experience, which I witnessed for the first time last year. As a candidate, NerdNation looked brand new all over again. There was also an interview portion, where I sat and spoke with a moderator in front of the crowd and answered questions about myself so the voting delegates could get to know me better. It was nerve-wracking, having to be up there in front of so many people and not knowing what questions would be asked. I thoroughly enjoyed my time campaigning, as it gave me an opportunity to speak with so many more people than I normally would ve felt comfortable approaching. I met a lot of students who had great ideas that I have been able to pass along to the new International Officers. It was truly draining, but I m pretty sure after this, any job interview is going to seem like a piece of cake. I gained some really amazing friends with my fellow candidates, and made closer friendships with those who so generously donated their time to help me campaign. I am forever grateful to our wonderful advisors Cherie and Dave for their support, as well as to my fabulous campaign manager, Becca McDowell. I also could not have done it without my campaign team, who really came through for me. Although I didn t win, it was still an incredible journey. Running for International Office is an exhausting, exhilarating experience. If you truly love Phi Theta Kappa, consider running for International Office. It will change your life, even if you don t get elected. I will never regret my decision to become a candidate.

From Dave Sigmund Our induction ceremony for new members was held on Sunday, April 17 th and it was a fantastic time! As I stated on that day, Beta Gamma Epsilon celebrated its twentieth anniversary this past January. In that time, we have inducted into the chapter several thousand members; however, only six honorary members in that same given time. Honorary membership is bestowed upon an individual who has served the society in some extra ordinary way. Those who are honored with membership are Pro Football Linebacker and Hall of Fame inductee Willie Lanier for his generous donation of the Dorothy Lanier Scholarship. Kevin Sharpe, country singer and motivational speaker for his dedication and support of Phi Theta Kappa. Senator Scott Oelslager for spearheading the Ohio specialty license plate dedicated to Phi Theta Kappa and the scholarship money it provides. And our very own Cheri Rice and Dr. Catherine Rock for their dedication to our chapter. On April 17 th, we inducted another honorary member for her enduring support and devotion to Beta Gamma Epsilon and its members. This individual is none other than our amazing advisor Cherie Barth! It just recently came to our attention that Cherie, although advisor for fifteen years, was not a member! The role of advisor does not require membership, and due to her humble nature, never let it be known. No one in all of Phi Theta Kappa is more deserving of membership than Cherie and full membership is now hers! We congratulate her with love and affection for who she is and for all that she stands for; advisor extraordinaire! Dave Sigmund
