SYMPOSIUM Climate Change Research in Germany: fostering national and international climate change cooperation HAW Hamburg, Berliner Tor 21, Hamburg 18th December 2018

BACKGROUND Germany is a leading country in respect of climate change research and projects. Apart from taking a key role in the field of climate change mitigation, and of being one of the largest supporters of international climate change adaptation initiatives, Germany invests substantial sums of money on climate projects within the country, and as part of its development aid programme. In additions, many public and private foundations, as well as national organisations such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) or the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, support research and cooperation with partners in developing countries in the field of climate change. But even though much is happening in Germany and despite the fact that many initiatives are supported by Germany as part of its international efforts, there is a paucity of events where German climate researchers on the one hand, and international specialists from other countries currently living in Germany may meet and exchange information and experiences. It is based on this perceived need for German-German and German-international interactions, that the first symposium Climate Change Research in Germany: fostering national and international climate change cooperation is being organised by the Research and Transfer Centre Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), in cooperation with the International Climate Change Information Programme (ICCIP). The event will offer an opportunity to discuss current climate change research, educational initiatives and projects, involving national and international experts. In order to maximise the benefits of the interactions, the event will be held in English. All papers submitted will be subject to peer-review. Accepted papers will be published in the peer-reviewed book Climate Change Research in Germany: fostering national and international climate change cooperation. OBJECTIVES Consistent with the need for more cross-sectoral interactions among the various stakeholders working in the field of climate change, the aims of the Symposium are as follows: I. to provide German and German-based research institutions and universities, with an opportunity to display and present their works in the field of climate change; II. to foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of climate change initiatives and projects, especially successful initiatives and good practice which may be replicated; III. to network the participants and provide a platform so they can explore possibilities for cooperation. Last but not least, a further aim of the event will be to document and disseminate the wealth of experiences available today. To this purpose, the papers submitted and which passed peer-review will be published in the book Climate Change Research in Germany: 2

fostering national and international climate change cooperation. This will be a further volume of the award-winning book series Climate Change Management published by Springer, which since its creation in 2008 has become the world s leading book series on climate change management. TARGET GROUPS The workshop will be of special interest to German nationals, and colleagues from other nationalities working on matters related to climate change in Germany. Delegates attending the Symposium will come from a cross-sectoral range of areas. These are: 1. researchers at universities and research centres 2. teaching staff at universities; 3. scholars visiting Germany (including AvH, DAAD and other visiting researchers); 4. members of NGOs working with climate change in Germany and abroad; 5. representatives from companies running climate change projects; 6. representatives from international organisations (e.g. UN bodies) and German foundations working with climate change and funding/ executing projects in Germany and overseas All delegates are warmly invited to use this unique opportunity to present and discuss the work they do, also documenting it to a wide international audience. In order to ensure full interactions, the language of the event is English. DEADLINES Submission of abstracts: 30th May 2018 Submission of full papers: 10th October 2018 Deadline for registrations: 30th October 2018 ABSTRACTS Please send an abstract with 200 words and the full contact details of the authors to info@iccip.net.
