Z3 SAR San Diego Chapter Newsletter Issue No.120 Summer Edition 2014 Edited by Ray Raser President s Message The summer of 2014 has been a very busy season for San Diego SAR. Flag Day aboard the USS Midway was highlighted by the historic flags of our member Tom Kubow that were displayed on the hanger deck, the Color Guard who fired their muskets from the USS Midway catwalk, the historic display of the Fort McHenry 15 star flag obtained through efforts of our 2 nd VP Richard Barck, and the SAR San Diego Chapter hosting the breakfast that was well attended. The breakfast meeting was a special occasion for Gail and myself as two of our five sons were inducted into SAR: Jacob Raser, a Major in the USAF who is returning to the USAF Academy as a staff member, and Joshua, who recently completed a tour of duty with the US Peace Corps in Ecuador and now is on a project in New Orleans. Flag Day USS Midway SAR Color Guard Firing the Muskets Reading the Declaration of Independence at the new San Diego Central Library 4 th of July celebration began a very active 4 th of July weekend of activities. SAR was well represented at the Coronado 4 th of July Parade with the Color Guard, Al Smithson s historic gold Lincoln convertible, the float furnished by the Tisch family, the banner carried by Natalie and Brian Cushman and the fife and drums played by Bryan Hendricks, Deborah Cushman and former President Dennis Cushman. Thank you Al Smithson for many years of loyal support to the San Diego Chapter. SAR was represented with displays at Casa de España July 4 th and 6 th. It was an honor to present a thank you letter and certificate to Angeles Leira Albariño for her generous gift of historic family swords from Spain to the San Diego Chapter. Thank you to Philip Hinshaw for your efforts in coordinating these activities. On Monday July 7 th I was honored to be interviewed about the SAR mission by John Reeves on radio station KGBQ on the Military Monday program. The OAS program was launched at the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton with compatriots Tom Johnston and Ernie McCullough assisting. I appreciate DAR District 14 Director, Jeanette Shiel, coordinating the DAR volunteers to work with the participants in the future. A pleasurable afternoon was spent with the Hinshaws at former CASSAR President John Dodd s BBQ in Orange County, then a week at the 124 th NASSAR Congress in Greenville, SC. A report on Congress is forth coming. Gail hosted the Ladies Auxiliary in our home in preparation for our 120 th SAR in SO CA Anniversary Banquet that has been rescheduled to October 25, 2014. 1
