THE SCOOP July 2018 Rehabilitation Assisted Living Nursing Care Memory Care Hospice 2161 Leonard St NW Grand Rapids, MI 616.453.7715 Carmelite Sisters, CDCJ Time for Patrons, Country and Our Home July is an important month for the Sisters and for St. Ann s. July 2 is the Foundation Day of our Congregation, and this year it is also a special day for Sister Mary Judith as she celebrates her 50th Anniversary as a Carmelite Sister of the Divine Heart of Jesus. July 16 is the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the patronal feast of all Carmelites. Then July 26 is the feast of Sts. Ann and Joachim, the patrons of our Home. Let s celebrate with our Country on July 4, and with our Home and community here on each of these special days. Now for a few quotes from our Foundress: Genuine love is like pure gold that nothing can destroy; not even fire; which only makes us more pure. So it is with divine Please see Sister, page 3 This painting called, Santi Gioacchino e Anna, depicts the saints. Pope Francis once said, in part, The Saints Joachim and Anna are part of a long chain which transmitted the faith and love of God,

Ashley Dykehouse St. Ann s employee of the month for June is Ashley Dykehouse. Ashley was nominated by many of her co-workers who are thankful for her helpful spirit. Ashley has been with St. Ann s since 2015. Ashley has been a constant contribution and has also been recognized for her professional accomplishments. She attended our Med-Tech class onsite, and received a Med-Tech Certification in November 2017. Ashley, we are so happy you are on our team, and we thank you for making a difference! St. Ann s Opens Family Pantry for Staff Ashley Dykehouse is June Employee of the Month There s a little red wagon parked in the main entrance vestibule, awaiting donations. The wagon symbolizes a new program designed to help St. Ann s staff who may find themselves in times of significant need. FAMILY PANTRY DONATION WAGON The Family Pantry, said Executive Director Dana Prince, is a free service for the benefit of our staff. We understand that life circumstances can put us in need of the basics for child care, our home pantries including food staples, and other necessities we sometimes take for granted. Prince said St. Ann s leaders agreed this simple step will provide tangible support. Our staff should see the Pantry as a free service they may access in times of significant need. We trust our staff will use the service wisely, and we hope that others will find it in their hearts to place a gift or two in the Donation Wagon, to support this service. 2

Emmanuel Energy Saving Project Consumers Energy and St. Ann s are in the midst of a joint energy-saving project focused on lighting improvements. Consumers Energy oversees a program allowing commercial customers to replace traditional lights with energy-efficient LED bulbs. St. Ann s has updated all its parking lot lamps and older bulbs in the kitchen area. Consumers Energy will monitor the energy savings and predicts reductions will allow St. Ann s to glean a significant rebate in energy costs. COMMUNITY Sister, from page 1 love: no tribulation, no labor can diminish or destroy it. Rather it is like gold. Everything that befalls it; the most painful persecutions and calumnies, everything serves to refine and strengthen it. My gratitude spurs me on to lead others to the Divine Heart. I have a burning desire to make my whole life an expression of thankfulness. Had not Divine Providence led me to Carmel? Had not God the Lord filled my heart with a great love for Holy Mother Teresa and confidence in her? I often said I will let myself be crucified for the Carmel. May your summer be safe and relaxing, and always centered on your loved ones. Cover Photo The June 23 Family Reunion brought about 150 residents, relatives and staff members together for an afternoon of fun, food and fellowship. ST. ANN S MISSION Sister M. Gabriela, CDCJ Our mission is to provide a loving and spiritual community for older adults to live lives of caring and wholeness inspired by our Carmelite foundation of fraternity, service and prayer. 3
