4-h Makerspace SpIN Club 4-H SPIN Clubs are short-term groups that meet to focus on a SPecial INterest or topic. They are a great way to learn about specific project areas and to get to know 4-H. Skill-Building Spring Break with 4-H S.T.E.M. Monday Monday, March 28 Robotics 9:30 a.m. to Noon and/or Arduino 1 to 3 p.m. Choose from Robotics and Electricity, or do both and stay for a convenient lunch break option. In the morning, get an introduction to the world of robotics, and learn to build and program Lego Mindstorm robot technology. The afternoon features Arduino Electronics technology. Youth will learn hardware and software basics, and program electronics boards, which have a wide variety of uses. If you register for both workshops, consider adding the one-hour lunch option, which includes a sandwich, sides and a drink. Ages: 8-up. Cost: $20/youth in AM, $20/youth in PM, $10/youth Lunch option Floriculture and Fine Arts Tuesday Tuesday, March 29 Flower Arranging 9:30 a.m. to Noon and/or Acrylic Art 1 to 3 p.m. In the morning, learn the art of floral design in this hands-on workshop. Participants will create their own arrangements with a variety of fresh flowers and containers. Youth will be taught the importance of a focal point, proportion and scale, as well as careers in floral design. The afternoon workshop focuses on acrylic painting. Youth will complete a canvas piece using acrylic paints with varied applications. If you register for both workshops, consider adding the one-hour lunch option, which includes a sandwich, sides and a drink. Ages: 8-up. Cost: $20/youth in AM, $20/youth in PM, $10/youth Lunch option Food & Nutrition Wednesday Wednesday, March 30 9:30 a.m. to Noon Love cooking shows and competitions? Join us for the Illinois Food Challenge. Participants will work in teams to create a healthy, delicious dish in just 35 minutes using mystery ingredients. Youth will learn about nutrition, food safety and healthy cooking habits. Ages: 8-up. Cost: $20/youth. Horticulture & Food Thursday Thursday, March 31 9:30 a.m. to Noon This unique workshop will focus on both planting a pizza garden and preparing a meal! Youth will be provided supplies to start a pizza-themed garden, including an egg carton and tomato, basil and pepper seeds. Participants will create a growth chart to track progress of their plants. *Unless otherwise noted, all workshops are scheduled to take place at the University of Illinois Extension office at 7775B Route 47, Yorkvill.e Poultry Workshop & Testing Tuesday, March 22, 1-2 p.m. Youth will learn how to identify different poultry breeds, properly care for and handle birds, and show at the fair. They also will receive information about poultry judging. Instructor: Beth Lohrey Poultry Superintendent Ages: 8 to 18 Cost: $2/youth Register by March 15. Space is limited. Save the Date: Poultry Testing Monday, June 13, 5 to 6 pm All poultry need to be tested for disease if you plan to show at the Kendall County 4-H Fair. Preregistration is required for this testing, including name, phone, club and number of birds being tested. If you have a large flock, 10% of the birds need to be tested. If birds were purchased from Big R, Rural King, Farm & Fleet, or a Hatchery you will need health paper from them. Instructor: Dave Gemmer, Poultry Superintendent Registration opens in March 2016. Fused Glass Nightlights Tuesday, March 22, 9-11 a.m. Students will be able to nip or cut glass and assemble the pieces to create a design that will be glued to a night light base. The glass will be fired in a kiln off site and will be available for pick up the following day. Student needs to check at home what direction their outlets turn so their design will be displayed properly when it's plugged in. All materials provided. Instructor: Jeanne Dennis Ages: 8 to 18 Cost: $15/youth Register by March 15. Space is limited. Glass Kumihimo bracelet Wednesday, March 23, 9-11 a.m. Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique, and it is surprisingly easy to do! You will make a braid with your choice of one or two colors. There will be samples of color patterns for you to choose from, too. You will tie off and trim the braid, then glue on end caps after attaching a magnetic closure. The hardest part will be waiting 24 hours to let the glue dry before you can wear it. All materials provided. Instructor: Jeanne Dennis Ages: 11 to 18 Cost: $15/youth Register by March 16. Space is limited. Art Basics with Rubber Stamps Thursday, March 24, 1-2 p.m. This class will feature basic art principles of perspective and composition, as well as stamping techniques of masking and scene building. Participants will do some hands-on exercises and create one scene. Youth must bring a pair of detail scissors (small, sharp scissors for cutting fine detail). The instructor will provide all other supplies. Note Location: Morris Library, 604 Liberty St., Morris Instructor: Tonya Weakly Ages: 12 to 18 Cost: $2/youth Register by March 17. Space is limited.
