The Little River Chamber of Commerce and Community Festival Advisory Committee met this week to share our success and discuss improvements for future events. We are excited to share that at this year s ShrimpFest, revenues for gate sales increased by 42%, Sponsorships increased by 22%, vendors increased by 52%, and souvenir sales increased by 20% this year. What does this improved attendance mean for us? A bigger festival means more people are visiting and enjoying Little River, SC. It also means we have more funds to reinvest back into the community. Last November at a town hall meeting, State Senator Greg Hembree met with Little River businesses and residents and developed a laundry list of improvements. Recently, our Executive Director met with Senator Greg Hembree to follow up and set priorities. While Senator Hembree has a lot on his plate, he is working with SCDOT to create a definitive plan on improving Mineola and Waterfront Avenues in Little River, SC. The Chamber is also working with Horry County Government to install video cameras at the Little River Waterfront for surveillance and safety reasons. Funds have already been designated and set aside for this; however, we re still waiting on some technology bugs to be fixed before investing. While there was a lot of compliments and positive feedback, like winning the 2014 Best of the Beach Award for our Blue Crab Festival for the 6th consecutive year, we know there s always room for improvement. Some changes we want to implement for our festivals include: better parking signage, improving our (free) shuttle routes, adding parking staff/volunteers, and introducing recycling. We are also considering introducing smaller special events leading up to the Blue Crab Festival. In addition to these improvements, our Festival Director and Committee want to increase the quality of vendors at the Blue Crab Festival, as well as refocus on arts, crafts, and small businesses. We want to promote artists, crafters, and local businesses to preserve our local character, improve and maintain our community well-being, promote local jobs, encourage entrepreneurship, and generally improve our local economy. Thanks again to our Festival Committee members. We owe much of our success to you. Our 2015 committee meetings will be on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from January April, and the first Wednesday of May. We have open spots on our Transportation/Parking, Marketing, Volunteer, Special Events, and Entertainment committees. To volunteer, please contact the Little River Chamber of Commerce at 843-249-6604 or at info@ littleriverchamber.org.
