This presentation will assist long term care staff members with developing a workforce culture of mutual respect and understanding for all. Having the Right People in the Right Job Positions - Disciplines: ALL Instructor: Denise Truckenmiller, HR Director, Burgess Health Center Do you have the right people in the right seats on your organizational bus? Find out. If you do, learn ways to enhance their ride. If not, learn ways to help your employees get to the right seat or move to another bus. The most important asset to any organization is the people. The most important thing to the people is knowing what they are working toward. Follow Burgess Health Center s journey from an average organization to becoming the The Best Rural Healthcare System in America. Learn what worked, what didn t, and how you can do exactly what we did best of all, you don t have to spend any money to do it.

Idea Catching: Program Ideas Walking Right Under Your Nose Disciplines: AP, ADM, ALMC Instructor: Jan Nelson, President, Center for Courageous Aging Creating new, innovative programs that will capture your residents interest is always a challenge. What if you could design a program in which you knew they would be interested and would allow them to experience hobbies, dreams and greatest life accomplishments? Those programs are walking under your nose everyday. This presentation will provide tools for you and your staff to identify and adapt interests and dreams into programs which will involve and stimulate residents. No more guessing if they will enjoy a program and no more struggling to come up with new ideas. As regulatory guidelines and MDS requirement tighten, it is essential that we include ADL s and staff cross-training into the daily routine of our facilities. This method will energize you, your staff and your residents

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 Breakout Session 3 (1.5 hours CEU) 10:15 a.m. 11:45 a.m. Getting Along with Difficult People - From Conflict to Cooperation - Disciplines: ALL Instructor: Joel Weintraub, President, Health Humor Inc. We all deal with them: upset family members, irritated residents, and co-workers that we just can t see eye-to-eye with. In order to get along with difficult people we must learn how to center ourselves and stay in a positive emotional frame. In this session you will learn how your emotions interfere with critical thinking and how to harness the power of your brain for intelligent and creative problem solving. You will also learn how to disarm confrontational behavior and how to turn potential adversaries into respectful partners working toward a common goal. Topping off this seminar will be information on the power of humor and its role in diffusing difficult situations and turning frustrating experiences into humorous dramatization. How to Strengthen Care and Reimbursement in Challenging Times - Disciplines: ADM, N, SS Instructor: John Sheridan, President, e-health Data Solutions We are facing tough times with the economy and Government agencies are looking to scale back many reimbursement programs for long term care facilities and their residents. This session will review the best practices with the resident assessments and show participants how capturing resident care and treatment in the MDS helps assure us that resident s needs are being met and that a facility is receiving the maximum reimbursement available. Assessment, treatment, and quality measures all tie together to the reimbursement process. State and Federal Reimbursement Programs in AL/Senior Housing Services - Disciplines: ADM, ALMC Panel members: Jeanine Chartier, Stacy Hejda, Christy Hofsaess With more than half of Iowa s seniors 75 and older having incomes less than $25,000 per year, many do not have access to assisted living as a long term care option. Our expert panel will review a variety of state and federal funding sources to pay for room, board, and services within affordable assisted living. Assisted living managers will be able to structure their contract and service plans to allow access to government-funded programs. If They Remember, They Will Come: 50% Door Knocking Reduction Disciplines: AP, ADM, ALMC Instructor: Jan Nelson, President, Center for Courageous Aging The program begins way before the program begins. Create "Anticipatory Excitement" for the programs that have been developed by adding publicity. Discover ways to utilize your whole environment and senses to advertise your programs. Turn your hallways into roadways for the Drive In Movie, and residents as Sandwich Boards. Become expert marketers. Your residents will be energized to come see what s happening. Replace the time you spend knocking with exciting publicity. Staff, residents, families and the community will become excited and involved.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 Breakout Session 4 (1.5 hours CEU) 12:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Reducing Employee Turnover in Long Term Care - Disciplines: ADM, ALMC, N, DH Instructor: Joel Weintraub, President, Health Humor Inc. Employees do not job hop seeking greater wealth. Treat an employee with respect and place them in positions in which they can improve their self-esteem and you could very well have an employee for the rest of their working life. The session will cover best practices for instituting pro-active strategies to meet and exceed state standards to assure continuous compliance and high standards of care. Transformational Small Groups: When We are Doing Something We Love, It Transforms Us Disciplines: AP, ADM, ALMC Instructor: Jan Nelson, President, Center for Courageous Aging The last time we did everything in a group of 30 sitting in a circle was in kindergarten. Why do we expect residents to like it and respond? Our lives and their lives have been made up of individual or small groups of friends with common interests doing things that they love. Putting the normal settings back into resident lives with small interest groups helps form community, creates ways for small groups to do the things that only 2-5 residents may enjoy and allows for more situations where we give control back to the residents. So from your readers, to woodworkers, coin collectors, actors, military and any other interests your residents may have, we ll find ways to transform residents.
