Treat an employee with respect and place them in positions in which they can improve their self-esteem and you could very well have an employee for the rest of their working life. This session will review the occurrence and management of MRSA in community and healthcare settings. You will be taken through the steps of a foodborne outbreak investigation to prepare you for the unthinkable. The most common gastroenteritis illness is Norovirus. The implications of Norovirus infection in long-term care facilities will also be discussed. Speaker Biographies Dr. Cindy Baddeloo (pronounced bad-low) Deputy Director, IHCA ICAL, assists the Executive Director with all aspects of managing the Association. She is responsible to the ICAL Board of Directors and is the spokesperson for ICAL. She staffs the Workforce Committee and the Iowa Health Foundation. She handles issues related to long term care workforce and serves on Iowa s Health Information Technology Summit planning committee and the Iowa Council of Nurses. Lynn Boes (pronounced Base) graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Nursing in 1979. She has been a registered nurse for 27 years and held national certification in Community Health Nursing through December 31, 1999. She has practiced in a wide variety of settings, including home care, hospital nursing (intensive care, medical-surgical, skilled nursing, and orthopedics), and as a consultant for the State of Iowa Department of Public Health. Lynn has served in both direct patient care and administrative capacities in the health field. Lynn graduated from Drake Law School with honors in 1996. She is a shareholder at the Davis, Brown, Koehn, Shors and Roberts law firm in Des Moines, IA. Jeanine Chartier MSOTR/L. Jeanine is owner/administrator of Char-Mac Assisted-living programs located in Lawton and Holstein, IA. She has been a board member for ICAL since 2002. She has been an advocate for the low-income frail elderly. Jeanine has appeared several times before the legislators to educate on the financial barriers to Iowa s low income seniors. Previous to developing her own facilities, Jeanine worked as a traveling occupational therapist in many of the Northwest Iowa nursing homes for many years. Julie Flaig Smith obtained a degree in business administration with a concentration in long-term care administration. She has been actively involved in the assisted living profession since 2000. Julie has worked on the provider side as an Executive Director for a large assisted living organization in Colorado and then opened up a new community in Minnesota. Julie is the Director of Assisted Living Development for My InnerView where her focus is primarily on the assisted living and independent living communities. She is actively involved in educating senior care leaders on My InnerView s services and partnering with providers to show the value of integrating our quality improvement and satisfaction tools into their communities. She works very closely with our state and national assisted living associations as a data partner as well. Stacy Hejda is a Consultant for Assisted Living Partners, L.L.C. She serves on the Quality Committee, Co-chairs the Payment for Services Committee, and is Director at Large for the Iowa Center for Assisted Living. Stacy provides consulting services to assisted living facilities focusing on program development and regulatory compliance monitoring as well as working with the Elderly Waiver and HUD rental assistance programs. Stacy received her Assisted Living Management certification in the spring of 2002. Jan Nelson, M.Ed., has spent the last 27 years in leadership development and activities programming. For 10 years on college campus across the U.S. and then 17 years with eldercare communities. Jan founded Courageous Aging, Inc. in 1997 as an activities consulting and training company for eldercare communities. Jan has spoken at various state healthcare organizations and also presents Courageous Aging Seminars across the U.S Sally Oudekerk is a Medicaid Policy Specialist for facility and waiver program with the Iowa Department of Human Services. She started with the Department in May 2000 as an Income Maintenance worker determining eligibility and benefits for adult and disabled Iowans. In 2006, she moved to the Income Maintenance Help Desk to assist field staff with policy and system questions. She was recently promoted to her job as Medicaid Policy Specialist. Lori Porter started her career in long term care over 25 years ago. She began as a dietary aide, moved on to be a CNA for seven years, a nursing home administrator for nearly seven years and operations director of ten skilled facilities in the Midwest. In 1995, she followed a dream and co-founded the National Association of Health Care Assistants (NAHCA) as a means to honor and recognize the CNAs and caregivers who serve our nation s elders, as well as, elevate the profession of nursing assistants through professional development, advocacy, and empowerment. Mary Rexroat, R.N., BS is a Nurse Epidemiologist at the Iowa Department of Public Health, Center for Acute Disease Epidemiology. In her current position she assists with disease surveillance, outbreak management and facilitating appropriate interventions by the local health departments. She also provides consultation for hospitals and long term care facilities on infection prevention and control questions. Donna Schneider, R.N., B.S.N. is a Nurse Epidemiologist at the Iowa Department of Public Health, Center for Acute Disease Epidemiology. As a regional epidemiologist, her duties include communicable disease assistance and epidemiological follow-up for 16 northwest Iowa counties, educational programs for surveillance and epidemiology, and assistance and leadership with Iowa s Bio-Emergency Preparedness Grant. Yogesh Shah, M.D., FAAFP, CMD, Dr. Shah is Triple board certified in Family Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Dr. Shah is Associate Dean for Global Medicine at Des Moines University. Dr. Shah is past Commissioner for Iowa Department of Aging and has served on many boards including, Board of Medical Examiners, Alzheimer s Association, American Medical Director s Association-Iowa Chapter to name few. Dr. Shah has a special interest in early detection and treatment of Alzheimer s disease and has presented on this topic at the local, national, and international level including Japan, Australia and India.

Speaker Biographies John Sheridan, CEO of ehealth Data Solutions, brings a blend of management, planning and leadership experience providing strategic vision and direction. His experience includes consulting and operations positions with a mix of health industry organizations including: consulting, medical practices, acute care and long term care companies, and Indemnity and Managed Health Insurance Plans. Gwen Suntken, RN BC, RAC-MT, MS, is a Nurse Consultant and Long Term Care Educator for LTC Resources LLC. Gwen earned her BSN from the University of Iowa and a Master s Degree in Health Care Administration from California College of Health Sciences. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, is certified in Gerontological Nursing, has earned a Gerontology Certificate from Penn State University, and is credentialed by and a Master Trainer for the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators. Denise Truck Truckenmiller holds a B.S. in Business Sociology and Organizational Leadership and an MBA with emphasis in Human Resource Management. Truck is a skilled certified mediator and published curriculum author. Most recently Truck is the Director of Human Capital at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa where she is helping to drive their recent culture change. Kelly Verwers Meyers, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Iowa Health Care Association is IHCA s members key resource for information on Iowa s long term care rules and regulations, the Iowa Code and Medicare Part D. Kelly is a Drake University Law graduate and has practiced in a private law firm as well as serving as an assistant prosecuting attorney in the Warren County Attorney's Office. Kendall Watkins is a shareholder in the law firm of Davis, Brown, Koehn, Shors & Roberts, P.C., and is a member of the firm s Health Law Department. His practice includes representation of health care providers in regulatory matters, responding to government investigations and malpractice litigation. Mr. Watkins received his B.A. degree from Knox College and his J.D. degree from Drake University Law School, where he served on the Drake Law Review. Joel Weintraub, M.Ed., B.S. is a humorous educator who has managed to merge the formerly disparate worlds of comedy and education. By combining his professional comedy experience with his masters degree in Physiology and bachelors in Health Education from Temple University, Joel has entertained and educated diverse audiences such as Accountants, Attorneys, Churches groups, Higher Education Faculty and Staff, Physicians, Synagogues and even Burglar Alarm Installers.

Iowa Health Care Association Iowa Center for Assisted Living are offering multiple subjects at this education conference. Each training session is designed to offer you and your staff the latest management, leadership, and teamwork strategies for continued success and quality in long term care. For each paid registration fee, participants may choose the session they would like to attend. It is not necessary to declare your choices on the registration form. Workshop titles and times are subject to change, due to scheduling conflicts and requests from speakers.
