Potbelly of Kettering had Hop Trotter, A Limp Pig Gold and Luverly Jubilee', and Nobby s of Guilsborough sold out fast with their Biggus Dickus and T owd Navigation. In all a great selection of fine ales chosen as always by Farmer Norton from Orlingbury. It must have been because we were on sacred ground that the weather over the weekend of the Waendel Beer Festival was the best it had been for weeks, which graciously allowed our drinkers the opportunity to sit and imbibe in the sunshine. So much so that we completely sold out of ale on the Saturday night at around 11.30pm, just perfect! early summer 2012_21480_Layout 1 27/06/2012 09:48 Page 4 Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce Paper Pallet Company Ltd - Press Release The Paper Pallet Company opened its doors in September, 2011, after completing the installation of a fully automated pallet manufacturing line, which is capable of producing 4000 paper pallets per shift. The company occupies a new 40,000 sq. ft. facility in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, where it produces paper pallets in all the standard European and American sizes. The environmentally friendly pallets are made from sustainable waste paper and are 100% recyclable after use but due to their robust construction and strong Honeycomb deck, they are capable of lifting a tonne of product and have stacking strength of 10 tonnes. published figures, which shows the CO2 savings that can be achieved by using the lighter weight pallets. The pallets are good news for exporters too; they are exempt from the ISPM15 certification and can travel freely to any part of the world. The light weight means they also make savings to those who airfreight their products, particularly now whilst there is a fuel surcharge based on weight. The pallets can easily be lifted in the workplace and there are no nails or splinters to cause injury whilst being handled, they are delivered stretch wrapped to ensure they arrive clean and hygienic. The pallets have been designed to be able to travel down conventional conveyors and work in standard palletisers without adjustment. Pen Portrait - Greg Hill In 2007, Greg Hill established SRE Technologies Ltd following his long term interest in naturally generated energy. His inspiration went beyond the installation of renewable technologies in education, but developed renewable energy generation with computer software/realtime web access and bringing the technology alive for schools and colleges to undertake and monitor their environmental projects. An experienced and successful entrepreneur, he has started and built successful businesses within Northamptonshire for the last 11 years, helping many employees develop a wide range of skills in support of their goals. Within 5 years of starting the company, Greg Hill has grown and developed SRE Technologies Ltd into becoming one of the most experienced MCS accredited installers of wind turbines and multi disciplined solar PV technologies in the UK and gained Trading Standards approval for quality and service. The company is also NICEIC approved and can undertake major electrical contracts. Greg Hill is an ex sapper and his experience in engineering, and can do attitude, has meant that during its 5 years, SRE Technologies Ltd has accomplished many firsts within the renewable energy industry; for example, SRE were the first company in the world to install a Proven 15kW Wind Turbine onto a 25M Tower. In 2009 Greg, his wife Sue, and two children Kate & Baz drove to the Sahara and back to raise funds for a childen s charity. Greg also attends many fundraising events to raise the profile/funds for a charity that is also very important to him, Help for Heroes. Pen Portrait - David O Neil David has lived and worked in the County for over 20 years and this has included leading many development and planning projects across Wellingborough, and he is also a Northamptonshire Ambassador. David enables commercial economic inward investment; he supports and enables commercial and other land development and regeneration through the planning process. He undertakes economic appraisals and builds delivery partnerships. Current schemes in this County have the potential to deliver over 7,000 new jobs. David has strong active networks across the private and public sector at senior levels in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, the South-East Midlands and at national level. In his spare time, David fits in several outdoor sports, has been on arctic expeditions, designed and built the family home (wife and two daughters), is a Parish Councillor and even occasionally treads the boards! Priorities for Wellingborough that he wants to support include strengthening the town centre offer by focusing on a distinctive offer that the market wants, and building up capacity in and around the town as more houses and more jobs means more town centre users for what is the town centre that has the best potential amongst all the county towns. 7

I also own the lease on The White Swan Inn at Holcot. Both are great country village pubs, both free-houses serving a range of ever changing Real Ales complemented by food served seven days a week ranging from a sandwich to a full three course Sunday Luncheon. I ve been connected with the catering trade for over thirty years from helping my parents operate their fish & chip shop to General Manager of the Royal Hotel in Kettering and everything in between. For the last twenty years I have been leasing village pubs in Walgrave, Holcot & Mears Ashby. I totally enjoy running village pubs, the local contact and the satisfaction is tremendous even in these very difficult trading times. The Borough s proximity to London, excellent communication links to the rest of the UK, and competitively priced property are just some of the advantages of being located, or relocating to the town. The central location of the town has remained important to its industrial development throughout history. Between 1750 and 1850, the town s main industry base centred around agriculture, whilst the period following 1850 was in contrast characterised by dramatic change as it underwent a belated process of urbanisation and industrialisation. During this time, Wellingborough saw the large-scale development of the boot and shoe industry, and ironstone quarrying. There was also a third phase of development in the town; the period from 1960 onwards was characterised by the gradual demise of manufacturing, and the rise of service and information technology sectors. With good communications links, distribution has become a key industry for the town, in addition to light engineering. The town s industrial estates are for the most part located within the town - Finedon Road, Ise Valley, Denington, Park Farm and Leyland Trading Estate. These purpose-built estates remain the best location for most industrial users as they have the necessary infrastructural requirements and locating here minimises environmental damage and disturbance to residential area in terms of traffic generation, noise, pollution and visual impact. Together they provide a variety of sites and premises in terms of size and location to meet the needs of most businesses. Accordingly, most industrial development has been directed to these estates. Wellingborough s advantageous position in relation to the primary road and rail networks is likely to lead to continued demand for major warehouse distribution depots and headquarter buildings. Indeed, Network Rail has recently completed major improvements at Wellingborough Station which provides a direct service to St Pancras International, giving passengers step-free access between entrance and platform. Engineers have installed a new footbridge and two lifts to allow easier and more equal access around the station. Modern logistic companies are now increasingly demanding high bay warehousing and unfortunately the existing developed industrial estates are unsuitable for these purposes. This is in the main due to their scale and potentially high traffic generation. Over the past couple of years, there has been a lack of developer activity within Wellingborough for various reasons, but mainly due to viability issues. Intervention by the Council could help to deliver these sites by providing the necessary investment conditions. Indeed, the Council itself is a major land owner and has indicated that it wishes to use these assets to unlock the town s economic regeneration potential. This would help to tackle the large number of brown-field sites to create step change that would bring investment to the Borough and a better future for communities and businesses. The proposed employment area of land to the east of the town - south of the railway - remains earmarked for development and in recent months has moved a step closer to being accessible for development. The Borough Council of Wellingborough has agreed to use compulsory purchase order powers to procure an access route into the site, which runs along the far side of the railway line near the station and the Leyland Trading Estate. This would also include an extension to Midland Road - via a bridge over the railway line - access to a transport interchange and a 1,000 space car park. So, Wellingborough remains well placed to provide for the well-being and increasing prosperity of the local economy, with sufficient employment land to enable the potential needs of the labour force to be met. It is anticipated that this can be achieved by building upon the strengths of the Borough - its increasingly diverse economic base and accessibility. However, consideration must be paid to provide for the needs of a variety of firms, both existing and new, by ensuring that a wide choice of land and premises in terms of size and location, with adequate infrastructure are available. early summer 2012_21480_Layout 1 27/06/2012 09:49 Page 10 Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce Chamber President Alan Piggot s Report for the year 2011 to 2012 Twelve months ago, when I had the good fortune to once again take the helm at the Wellingborough Chamber, I was determined that I would make changes that would see the Chamber's name back in the spotlight for the district. With the support of the committee, we aimed to re-build and re-launch the website as this had fallen twice before and I was determined it wouldn t happen again. To date we are receiving more than 600 hits per month and it is populated with up to date information on our members and the happenings within the chamber. New members are the lifeblood to any chamber and we have seen new large, medium and small companies join in the past 12 months. The new look, larger full colour Newsletter was launched and is hailed as a great success. We have received a great deal of media coverage for our actions and cemented relationships with the local press who regularly ask us for our contributions. We held a sell-out New Year dinner at the refurbished Hind Hotel, with a tremendously good guest speaker and have been asked by the participants to hold similar events in the future. I would like to thank my committee, without whose support and encouragement we would not have achieved all this. I would especially like to thank David and James for the many hours they have given to chamber business over the past twelve months and on the solid commitment they have given to the launch and the tireless support to the Ambassador scheme. We have introduced and launched the successful Ambassador scheme, which again has attracted interest and has given us strong issues with which to lobby council. We held our tenth highly successful Wellingborough Beer Festival and made a small profit after donating some of the proceeds to charity. Chamber President Alan Piggot was elected to serve a second term. The future twelve months is going to be a crucial period for the chamber. Now that we are once more a strength in the district, we must keep pressure on the council to get new properties built and wherever possible support new industrial sites by supporting the developers and lobbying councillors. We need to build our CRM system and eventually aim to sell (for a small fee) data information about our members. We must keep stories up to date on our website and extort the virtues of social media amongst our members. We must grow our membership as much as we possibly can as you always have strength in numbers! The more members the stronger our voice will be heard. The Ambassador scheme must remain active and we aim to get our ambassadors to take on individual roles in their individual sectors. The next major meeting is set for May. We already have the start of our events diary with a Queens Jubilee Lunch at Wellingborough Golf Club, plus an evening BBQ and fun at the Griffins Head in Mears Ashby. We also have two more beer festivals as community events, May and September and our events team are thinking of other ways to get our members together outside their normal working day. We have the people, we have the parts, so let s continue to grow our Chamber and we will all reap the rewards. The newsletter must remain a regular quarterly publication and be as up to date as it can be and must also be available on our website. 10

early summer 2012_21480_Layout 1 27/06/2012 09:49 Page 12 Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce Children Lead STEM Learning at Lab_13 Dear Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce Members, Lab_13 is a very special science lab in Irchester Community Primary School. We are writing to tell you what Lab_13 is about and why it is so special to the students of our school, other local schools and the Northants area in general. First of all, we are the ONLY Lab_13 in Northamptonshire which makes us very special indeed. There is a network of 6 Lab_13s in the world and only 3 are in primary schools. We work to promote STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). The best thing about our lab is that it is run by the kids for the kids. We have a management committee of 10 and 11 year old students who make all the big decisions and control finances and budgeting. We even wrote the job description, interviewed and chose our scientist in residence who is based in Lab_13 and helps the children with their science skills. The best thing about Lab_13 in Irchester is our Question Board. Here children can write down the questions that they want answered! This means that there is no curriculum to be followed in Lab_13, just our own curiosity to be solved - from Edwin s What is dark plasma? to Gracie s Why is the sky blue? Also, it isn t just for the brainy children or the older children in the school; it is for children of any learning ability from 4 to 11 year olds. When we leave the education system we will eventually take up jobs that haven t been invented yet. Can you imagine the advances in technology and science by then? Also, the problems that will come with it which will need creative solutions from our creative minds? In February we had a great event called Walking with Scientists - a Journey into the Future. We believe that we will be the scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs of the future Northamptonshire and that we are learning invaluable skills in Lab_13 to help us get there. We invited many local business people and were fortunate to have Mr. David Cross and Mr. Alan Piggott join us. It was a huge success! We took people on a tour around the lab and the school to see how each year group from Foundation Stage to Year 6 have been answering their own questions using real scientific skills. Everyone was amazed that all of the children were learning things way above their age level! Our next big event will be our Chemistry at Work day in June. We are inviting children from ten local schools to come and see how chemistry is a vital part of so many jobs and how important it is to our lives. Students elect a Board of Directors from amongst their peers, raise share capital, market and finance a real product or service of their own choice and sell it to the public. Through participating in the Company Programme, students develop their Enterprise knowledge and understanding, and also skills and attributes in a business context. They learn by doing, coping with a changing and evolving business, developing essential skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, managing risk, creativity, innovation and leadership.
