Podium Presentations Food as Medicine: A Collaboration Between Medical Professionals and Food Providers With the help of thousands of volunteers, Chester County Food Bank distributes nearly 3 million pounds of food per year to local cupboards and pantries. One third of that food is fresh produce. This session will discuss initiatives to highlight fresh produce and real foods. It will also discuss the use of volunteers in recipe demonstrations, food growth, and community outreach. Partnership and Access to VA Healthcare: Mobile Veteran Program (MVP) The MVP is a partnership and collaborative effort between VA Medical Centers and local Veteran Service Organizations. It opens access to care by providing services located in the community near the veteran s home. This partnership strengthens the pledges between the VA and VSO in supporting and advocating for our Veterans health and well-being. Examples include therapeutic exercise, memory-focused brain exercises, current events discussions, nail care and hand hygiene, music, art, trivia, and other leisure activities. A nutritious bag lunch is provided to each participating veteran. This presentation will discuss preliminary outcomes, service satisfaction, and cost of care. The Backpack Project: A Nurse-Driven Community Intervention for Childhood Hunger The goal of this nurse-driven project was to supply food each week to students in the Jeannette School District. The study looked at the amount of food distributed, student academic outcomes, improved school attendance, and decreased visits to the school nurse s office for hunger-related complaints. Due to this program s success, Excela Health nurses will purchase a food cupboard for the district and fill it with bulk food items (2017-2018 school year). Students and parents can utilize the cupboard on a regular basis. Healthy Culture Index Healthy culture is one where engaged employees share a sense of mission and purpose. It is built and supported by leaders who set a positive tone consistent with the values. It fosters trust and leverages positive energy to spur movement. This presentation will discuss recommendations for distributing, educating, and measuring a Healthy Culture for leaders. Community-Based Effort to Reduce Youth Violence in West Philadelphia Philadelphia has seen an uptick in homicides, as well as policy changes to address this issue. This presentation will discuss factors contributing to youth violence and collaborative initiatives to create change in the community. Case Study: A Clinical Instructor s Transformation of Student Learning Experiences with a Standardized Patient Simulation Leadership is recognized as an important aspect of the educator role. This case study explored transformational leadership in the context of clinical nursing education through simulation with standardized patients in an undergraduate baccalaureate program. This presentation will discuss the four themes found in the analysis. Adult and Senior Nutrition Education Program The Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI) is a program of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania that engages, educates and empowers youth, university students, and community members to promote healthy lifestyles and build a just and sustainable food system. It is their mission to improve the likelihood that eligible individuals will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles consistent with current guidelines. This presentation will discuss a food education model, opportunities for nurses to get involved, and best practices for adult education. Poster Presentations. Posters will be on display highlighting innovative nursing ideas, actions, and programs implemented throughout Pennsylvania. CALL FOR ARTICLES PENNSYLVANIA NURSE THE DO's AND DO NOT's DO prepare your article focused on the audience of Pennsylvania Nurse. Our audience spans three to four generations. Our audience works in practice, education, research, and administrative settings or are retired. DO be clear about what readers must be able to identify, describe, or explain after reading your article. State the purpose of the article early in the manuscript. Keep in mind that your article is a strategy for teaching to a wide audience. DO write simply and directly. Ask someone to read your article before submitting it. Choose someone who has experience writing for publication in professional texts and/or journals. DON T send in a course paper simply because your professor said it should be published. Articles for journals are different from course papers. Certainly revise a paper for Pennsylvania Nurse. Work with your professor so that your course paper can be in the format of a journal article. DON T send a stream of consciousness. Subdivide your article into an introduction, followed by specific sections. Remain true to the purpose (and title) of your article. DON T wander from your topic.
