Podium Presentations Food as Medicine: A Collaboration Between Medical Professionals and Food Providers With the help of thousands of volunteers, Chester County Food Bank distributes nearly 3 million pounds of food per year to local cupboards and pantries. One third of that food is fresh produce. This session will discuss initiatives to highlight fresh produce and real foods. It will also discuss the use of volunteers in recipe demonstrations, food growth, and community outreach. Partnership and Access to VA Healthcare: Mobile Veteran Program (MVP) The MVP is a partnership and collaborative effort between VA Medical Centers and local Veteran Service Organizations. It opens access to care by providing services located in the community near the veteran s home. This partnership strengthens the pledges between the VA and VSO in supporting and advocating for our Veterans health and well-being. Examples include therapeutic exercise, memory-focused brain exercises, current events discussions, nail care and hand hygiene, music, art, trivia, and other leisure activities. A nutritious bag lunch is provided to each participating veteran. This presentation will discuss preliminary outcomes, service satisfaction, and cost of care. The Backpack Project: A Nurse-Driven Community Intervention for Childhood Hunger The goal of this nurse-driven project was to supply food each week to students in the Jeannette School District. The study looked at the amount of food distributed, student academic outcomes, improved school attendance, and decreased visits to the school nurse s office for hunger-related complaints. Due to this program s success, Excela Health nurses will purchase a food cupboard for the district and fill it with bulk food items (2017-2018 school year). Students and parents can utilize the cupboard on a regular basis. Healthy Culture Index Healthy culture is one where engaged employees share a sense of mission and purpose. It is built and supported by leaders who set a positive tone consistent with the values. It fosters trust and leverages positive energy to spur movement. This presentation will discuss recommendations for distributing, educating, and measuring a Healthy Culture for leaders. Community-Based Effort to Reduce Youth Violence in West Philadelphia Philadelphia has seen an uptick in homicides, as well as policy changes to address this issue. This presentation will discuss factors contributing to youth violence and collaborative initiatives to create change in the community. Case Study: A Clinical Instructor s Transformation of Student Learning Experiences with a Standardized Patient Simulation Leadership is recognized as an important aspect of the educator role. This case study explored transformational leadership in the context of clinical nursing education through simulation with standardized patients in an undergraduate baccalaureate program. This presentation will discuss the four themes found in the analysis. Adult and Senior Nutrition Education Program The Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative (AUNI) is a program of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania that engages, educates and empowers youth, university students, and community members to promote healthy lifestyles and build a just and sustainable food system. It is their mission to improve the likelihood that eligible individuals will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles consistent with current guidelines. This presentation will discuss a food education model, opportunities for nurses to get involved, and best practices for adult education. Poster Presentations. Posters will be on display highlighting innovative nursing ideas, actions, and programs implemented throughout Pennsylvania. There will be several opportunities to view the posters throughout the day and contact hours will be awarded. Join us and talk with your nurse colleagues who created these exciting presentations. Sessions. PSNA reserves the right to cancel, reschedule, or substitute speakers for particular educational sessions. PSNA does not endorse any speaker s or exhbitor s products or services. Pennsylvania State Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation.

Environmental Health Committee: Yearly. Turn off lights, use energy-efficient bulbs, and unplug electronics or unused appliances Purchase efficient appliances with an Energy Star rating Wash clothing in cold water and hang it to dry Prolong clothing life by reducing fabric wear caused by dryers Walk, bike, use public transit, or carpool Increase your car s fuel economy by avoiding rapid acceleration or excessive braking Conserve water to reduce energy requirements and carbon emissions Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving Switch to green power and research your power company (wind, water, coal, or solar) Review renewable resources through PApowerswitch.org Recycle packaging and consumer goods Purchase items with minimal and recyclable packaging Call 800-RECYCLE or visit Ecology's recycling site Dispose of electronics in an environmentally responsible manner Recycle or repurpose clothing and household goods Recycle newspaper, plastic, glass, and metal Use a chipper to grind up branches and yard waste for mulch or compost Compost kitchen waste Be aware of tick season - According to the CDC, 2017 has been the worst in several years - A milder winter in 2016 has caused a surge in the mouse population - Mice carry Lyme and ticks feed on mice Use low-phosphate liquid and washing powders - Phosphates stimulate algal growth when discharged into the water supply - Phosphates lower oxygen levels, as well as kills plants and fish Buy local, or better still, grow your own food Buy from companies with eco-friendly policies Eat no meat or animal products at least once a week - Studies estimate that production of a 1/4 lb. of beef requires 460 gallons of water - There are also effects from methane Reduce reliance on plastic, especially avoid plastic straws Refuse plastic bags or reuse/recycle the bags Reuse cloth bags (in the U.S., nearly 14,000 trees are cut each year for paper bags) Carry a mug to avoid disposable cups in landfills Save files electronically think twice before printing Make gifts of experience or service to create a more meaningful (less stressful) holiday

Eco-Friendly Tips Seasonal. SPRING Plant a tree for shade and removal of carbon from the atmosphere Select plants that are suited to your climate and require minimal watering Start a compost heap to reduce waste to landfill sites Clean gutters and downspouts Eliminate or reduce chemical fertilizers Use an efficient irrigation system Mulch around plants to conserve water Participate in Earth Day activities Become informed about your local watershed Collect rainwater for watering plants SUMMER Use fans to circulate air Set air conditioners to make your home comfortable (not icy cold) Limit sun exposure, wear protective clothing, and use non-chemical sunscreen - Sunscreen chemicals kill coral reefs - These chemicals have led to lymphoma in humans and dogs Use solar panels - they are effective even in areas without extreme sunshine FALL Don t sweep leaves and clippings into the street - Clippings in storm drains causes algae growth in local water sources - Pesticides in the grass can harm fish Compost yard waste Burn dry wood - wet wood releases pollutants into the air Never burn treated wood, magazines, color newsprint, plastics, or garbage Purchase reusable stainless steel containers for packed lunches WINTER Wrap gifts in fabric and tie with ribbon - both are reusable Insulate your home and pipes Purchase window coverings to keep in warmth and seal any existing cracks Reduce your thermostat by 3.5 F and lower water heater temps to 120 F Decorate with earth-friendly trees Prevent pollution when camping or skiing Reduce fuel in gasoline-powered lawn mowers or garden equipment
