Cam usnews Academic News Page 2 LA SALLE UNIVERSITY Office of t he President MICHAEL ). McGINNISS, F.S.C., Ph.D. Pre.idenr March I Z, 2009 Dear La Salle Students and Parents: As you are well aware, the c urrent economic situation in this country and around the world has presented all of usindividuals, families, institutions-with significant challenges. Over the past year, as the economic crisis has worsened, we at La Salle have been monitoring the situation closely and making the necessary adjustments. In our deliberations about budgeting and spending, we weigh what is necessary for us w continue to provide the highquality education for which we are known while containing costs in consideration of the economic realities for our students and their families. It is in this context that I am sharing with you the University's tuition a nd fcc schedule for the 2009-2010 academic year. The tuition increase for the next academic year is our lowest percentage annual increase since 1995. We have been able to arrive at this decision because of prudent judgments about hiring and promotion, a freeze on capital renovation projects and capital equipment purc hases, strategies to cut the cost of utilities, and the prioritization of discretionary spending. ln short, we are doing everything possible to make a La Salle education affordable in tight financia l times. What I can assure you is that a La Salle education continues to be well worth the investment. We at La Salle are inspired by St. John Baptist de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers, and are shaped by Lasallian and Catholic values. La Salle's reputation is built on excellence in teaching and learning, personal attention, a strong sense of community, and a global perspective. O ur talented and committed faculty and staff provide the environment for both a valuable education and an education with values. We are looking forward w the next phase of our campus expansion and development this summer. Despite the economy, our Holroyd Hall construct'ion-featuring the Hugh and Nancy Devlin Center for Science and Technology-is scheduled to be ready for fall classes. Also, the Shoppes at La Salle, the shopping center on campus, will be fu lly completed and open, further enhancing the quality of life for the campus and community. Guided by our new Strategic Plan, The Wlill ro Excel, I am confident that the future is bright for this University and for our students. The La Salle of the future will be characterized by tangible and vibrant signs of the Lasall ian mission in action. It will be a place where students and faculty share in a process of exploration in the context of a real community, one that links theory and practice and focuses on a commitmenr to others. It will be fiscally responsible and optimize all of its resources. It will be international in perspective, yet remain a truly Philadelphia institution and a good neighbor. TI1e La Salle of the future will take the best of its past and present and make it even better. Thank you for the confidence you have placed in us and for your decision to be part of La Salle's future. Sincerely, Michael J. Volpe Approval of Minutes The minutes from the meeting of January 29, 2009 were approved by a vote of 13 0 0. Assessment Committee Proposal A proposal for a new University Standing Committee on Academic Assessment was approved by a vote of 17 0 0. Update Faculty Senate Election Process Dr. McGuinness reported that the first round of the Faculty Senate election process will be done on line. Faculty members must be on campus in order to participate, as the software will not work from other locations. Update Non Tenure Track and One Year Appointments Proposals President Welsh advised that this proposal is with the Provost and the Academic Deans, and then will come back to the Senate. University Curriculum Proposal President Welsh advised that this proposal is going to the Council of Deans, and then will come back to the Senate. Reconsideration of Proposal on Tenure and Promotion Eligibility of External Hires The Senate discussed the proposal on tenure and promotion eligibility of external hires. The Executive Committee was charged with bringing the proposal to the Provost, and asking for it, as well as the 2004 policy on identifying tenure eligibility for specific academic leadership positions, to be placed in the University Handbook. The Senate asked for clarification on the need for hiring externally, the process by which these decisions are made, and how promotion is determined for new hires. The Senate also asked that the description of the role of the department chair in this process be reviewed. What role does the department play in the decision to hire an external chair? Whose decision is it? Any additional questions that Senators would like addressed should be forwarded to President Welsh. The proposal was approved by a vote of 16 0 2. Other Handicapped parking was brought up, particularly the status of parking in front of Olney Hall in the fall of 2009, when the new science building opens. This was referred to Professor J. Frizzell. Next Meeting: March 17, 2009, from 12:30 1:50 p.m. in McShane Board Room Submitted by Bonni H. Zetick, Secretary
