National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) Since 1995, NCHIP has supported efforts to states and territories for improvements in the accuracy, quality, timeliness, immediate accessibility, and integration of state criminal history and related records; development and enhancement of national systems of criminal history and related records, and facilitated state participation; and, statistical research for critical analysis of the improvement and utilization of criminal history records.

FY 2010 NCHIP Priorities 1. Updating and automating case outcomes from courts and prosecutors in state records and the FBI s Criminal History File. 2. Full participation in the III and the NFF including adoption and implementation of the National Crime Prevention and Privacy Compact. 3. Automating access to information concerning persons prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm and transmitting relevant records to III, NCIC, and the NICS Index. 4. Supplemental funds for domestic violence and stalking records. NCHIP includes funds separately appropriated under the Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005 for grants to improve domestic violence and stalking records.
NICS Act Record Improvement Program (NARIP) Grant Eligibility Requirements Must provide the AG a "reasonable estimate" of available records. BJS developed Information Collection Must implement relief from disability program. ATF approval required
NARIP Update 2009 NARIP Overview Received 22 applications Requested $12.8 million in funding Only 3 awards were made (NV, NY, OR) No other states received certification/approval from ATF on relief from mental health disability program Awards totaled $2.5 million Remaining funds are not available in 2010 2010 NARIP Overview Grants to states, state courts, and tribal governments Solicitation to be posted Early/Mid March Deadline to receive applications Early May $20 million appropriated
