BURCIN S CAREER HIGHLIGHTS 2011 Assistant coach TEAM USA at the Palmer Cup, Stamford, Ct. 2010 Golf Coaches Association Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year 2005-11 Assistant coach South Carolina: Gamecocks attended six-straight NCAA Regionals including winning the only regional title in 2007; attended three NCAA Championships Bachelor of Arts Liberty University, 2009 Golf professional in Lancaster, Pa. PGA playing professional Native of Salinas, Kan.; graduated Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lampeter, Pa. Head coach Michael Burcin (BURsin) was named the men s golf coach at Wisconsin on May 31, 2011, after seven years at the University of South Carolina. Burcin, who was recently named an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2011 Palmer Cup, has been an assistant for the men s golf program at South Carolina since the spring of 2005. Burcin was named the 2010 Golf Coaches Association of America s Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year. In April, he was selected to serve as an assistant at the 2011 Palmer Cup, which takes place June 9-11 at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition for teams of collegiate golfers from the United States and Europe which square off in a threeday match play event. My family and I are excited to come to Madison, Burcin said. Wisconsin is certainly a sleeping giant and I am looking forward to connecting with the golf community in the city and around the state. My No. 1 priority is to recruit the state hard and keep the best players within the borders. If you are able to do that, it usually leads to big things. My goal is to develop a program that competes at a high level in the Big Ten Conference. If you are able to do that, because of the quality of the conference, you set yourself up to be a player on the national scene. In Burcin s time on the men s staff, South Carolina was a major player on the national scene. The Gamecocks made six-straight NCAA regional appearances (2005-10), including winning the school s first NCAA regional title in 2007. They advanced to the NCAA championship three times in Burcin s seven seasons, with their top finish being a share of 11th place in 2007. In 2008-09, Burcin helped South Carolina win a school-record four tournament titles. During Burcin s time at South Carolina, four Gamecocks earned All- America honors and seven earned All-SEC honors. In addition to assisting coaches with day-to-day coaching duties, Burcin s primary role at South Carolina was to implement and coordinate a recruiting program conducive to winning championships. Burcin was also the men s golf liaison for the academic staff, and the team achieved at least a 3.3 grade point average in each semester and combined for a team-record 3.54 GPA in the fall of 2006. Before going to South Carolina, Burcin spent seven years as a golf professional in Lancaster, Pa. His last stop in Pennsylvania involved developing an indoor teaching program at a retail golf store in Lancaster. While in Lancaster, Burcin kept an active playing schedule of section and chapter PGA events. Originally from Salina, Kan., Burcin graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lampeter, Pa., where he was a 10-time letterwinner in three sports. Burcin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Liberty University in 2009. A member of the Golf Coaches Association of America, Burcin is married to Dr. Michelle Burcin, who was a standout swimmer at the University of Cincinnati. In 2011, the couple gave birth to their first child, daughter Josie. Michael Burcin (third from back left), served as the assistant coach for Team USA at the 2011 Palmer Cup held at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. Also in the photo is Arnold Palmer (white coat) and Jin Nance of NBC (far right).

Bryant Odom, a former University of Georgia All-American and All-SEC performer, joined the Badgers as the assistant men s golf coach in 2011 after serving two years as the graduate assistant for UGA during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The Cartersville, Ga., native lettered for the Bulldogs from 1999-2002. In 2001, he was the 13th Georgia player to win the Southeastern Conference individual title. I am extremely excited to have Bryant Odom join me in Madison and the University of Wisconsin, Burcin said. It was very important to me to bring someone on board who shared the same ideals from a recruiting standpoint and had experience in a top notch national program. Bucin continued, While at South Carolina, I was very familiar with the University of Georgia program and what they have accomplished. Bryant and I share the same ideals of what we want the men s golf program at Wisconsin to become and how we want to get to those raised expectations. I think our alumni, passed letterwinners, current team, and future Badgers will benefit from his past experiences. Bryant s wife, Abby also played golf at Georgia and we are excited to welcome her as well to the Badger family. This is an exciting day for Wisconsin men s golf! Odom garnered All-America honors in 2001 and 2002, and he was an All-SEC selection in 2000, 2001 and 2002. During Odom s playing career in Athens, the Bulldogs won 13 tournaments, including the 1999 national championship and the 2000 and 2001 SEC titles. Odom also excelled in the classroom. He was named to SEC Academic Honor Roll four straight seasons. Odom graduated in 2002, with a degree in Sports Studies. He recently added a master s in Sports Management in 2011. History of Golf at Wisconsin The Coaches Prior to 1922 Wisconsin did not have a varsity golf team, but competition thrived at the club level. The golf club represented the university at some of the Western Conference Championship matches, placing third in 1906 and 1913, and fourth in 1915. Golf became a varsity sport in 1922, but Wisconsin did not have a coach until 1926 when Joe Steinauer was appointed for one year. George Levis took over in 1927 for a year, Andy Leith coached in 1928, and Levis returned for 1929 31. Steinauer then returned in 1932 and coached the golf team until his retirement in 1951. His dual meet record for 19 years was 100 wins, 61 losses and 6 ties (.617). JOHN JAMIESON IN UW ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Wisconsin State Junior Golf Champion in 1934, at the age of 15; prominent player in amateur golf circles from 1947 51 Wisconsin State Amateur Golf Champion, 1951 Graduated from the UW Madison with a degree in economics and political science, 1938 Named the University of Wisconsin- Madison Varsity Golf Coach, 1952 69; coached the 1957 badger team to its first-ever Big Ten championship John Steinauer 1932 51 John Jamieson 1952-1970 Coached three Big Ten medalists in 1952,1955 and 1963; had a co-medalist athlete play in the 1958 NCAA Championship Tournament Five Badger Golf Teams participated in the NCAA tournament during his tenure as a coach Compiled a career coaching record of 171-80-5, (.681) in 18 years Worked tirelessly for 36 years on every phase of the UW-Madison golf course project. One of his happiest days was seeing his dream come true, the opening of the University Ridge Golf Course in 1991 Instrumental in the founding of Wisconsin s National W Club, Inc., 1948 President of the Madison Alumni Association, 1951 Director of the National Alumni Association, 1951 53 John Jamieson succeeded Steinauer in 1952 and boasted three individual Big Ten tournament champions and one team championship in 1957. In his 18 years as head coach, Jamieson s overall record at Wisconsin showed 171 wins, 81 losses and five ties for a.675 percentage. His teams placed in the Big Ten s first division five times, including a secondplace finish in 1963 (one stroke behind Minnesota) and third-place finishes in 1952, 1955 and 1966. Tom Bennett moved into the head coach position after Jamieson s retirement in 1969. He would remain at Wisconsin through seven seasons before being replaced by Dennis Tiziani. Tiziani brought the team into upper division status in the Big Ten, winning back-to-back men s conference titles in 1993 and 1994, UW s first Big Ten titles since 1957. Besides the two Wisconsin individuals that advanced to the NCAA championships, he led three squads to the NCAA regional championship, two of which advanced to the national championship. Jim Schuman was named the seventh Wisconsin head golf coach in 2003. Schuman s teams have had three of the top four lowest team scoring averages in school history including the record of 293.22 (7,917 strokes/27 rounds) set in 2004 05. His 2007 and 2008 teams were the last teams to attend the NCAA Regional Championships and he had an individual qualifier in Dan Woltman who attended the 2009 Regional. In 2011, Michael Burcin was named head coach of the Badgers after spending seven years as an assistant at South Carolina.
