Job Announcement for Associate Professor at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will offer a job opportunity as an associate professor described below. We are looking forward to receiving recommendations for adequate people and applications from them broadly. 1. Title and Number of Position(s) One Associate Professor 2. Department to Which the Professor Will Belong Department of Space Astronomy and Astrophysics, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science 3. Summary of Position (Duties and Required Abilities) JAXA/Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science (ISAS) is conducting a strategic space science program to be realized in 2020s. In the field of Space Astronomy and Astrophysics, JAXA/ISAS sets the key questions, how the universe begins and how the universe evolves as the big science goals. To address these goals and to understand the physical processes of structure formation and evolution since the early phase of the universe, JAXA/ISAS is promoting space missions by utilizing various methods that cover wide range of electro-magnetic wavelength. In the series of the JAXA Strategic Large-Class Science Missions listed in the Implementation Schedule (Roadmap) of the Basic Plan on Space Policy, JAXA/ISAS is now conducting the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM, previously called as X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission) targeting the launch in the Japanese fiscal year 2020. It is the highest priority for JAXA/ISAS to achieve the extensive study with high precision X-ray

spectroscopy by XRISM to continue and expand the science goals of ASTRO- H. Following XRISM, ISAS is now also promoting the two Strategic Large- Class Science Missions in the concept development phase (Phase A), LiteBIRD, studying B-mode polarization of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) to search for primordial gravitational waves emitted during the cosmic inflation era, and then SPICA, the next generation cryogenic large-aperture telescope. It is one of the most important goals for JAXA/ISAS to steadily advance the study of these future planned missions. For all the three missions, cryogenic detector technology including verification and validation is essential, and the progress with accumulation of capability and experience of such technology is needed. We here open a job for Associate Professor in ISAS who takes a significant role in conducting the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM), and also takes initiative in promoting the JAXA/ISAS future strategic science mission in space astronomy and astrophysics (LiteBIRD or SPICA). The Associate Professor is expected to attend to the verification and validation of the X-ray micro calorie meter, Resolve, which is the main science instrument of the XRISM mission payload developed in collaboration with NASA and other partners. The Job Description of this Associate Professor includes, To work for the development of the X-ray micro calorie meter (Resolve) of the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, especially attending to the calibration and validation of the instrument. To work for the JAXA/ISAS future space mission projects planned after the XRISM project, namely, LiteBIRD or SPICA, in which the advanced technology for cryogenic detectors is also essential. To conduct research in the field of space astronomy and astrophysics understanding the role of JAXA/ISAS as the institute being responsible for the inter-university research activities, and to work on the other

related activities of JAXA including education of graduated students. To fulfill these duties, the successful candidate of this Associate Professor needs to satisfy at least the following conditions. He/she has an advanced experience in instrumentation for space science missions. It is desired that he/she has an experience in calibration and validation of the cryogenic instruments. He/she has an advanced record in academic research in the field of astronomy and astrophysics and has a good potential to take a leadership in the future space astronomy and astrophysics mission. He/she is capable of offering education and guidance to graduate students 4.
