1. Introduction The refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full SMSTS course or subsequent refresher course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics many building on the previous five-day course programme as well as introducing new subjects. 2. Aims and objectives 2.1. Aims The refresher course aims to: improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues; and identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation, and new working practices. 2.2. Objectives At the end of the period of training, delegates will be aware of and be able to implement: aware of, and able to implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a manager aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry of best practice aware of their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment. 3. Entry requirements The refresher course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five day Construction Site Management Training Scheme (SMSTS) or subsequent refresher course and hold a valid SMSTS certificate and have provided evidence to the training provider of their eligibility. If a delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate, it may be possible to receive confirmation from your Cskills Awards customer co-ordinator on 0344 9944020. Your customer co-ordinator will require delegate information such as registration number, date of birth or National Insurance Number in order to locate the appropriate record. If an individual cannot be located on the system and no evidence of their certificate can be found, they will have to attend the full SMSTS course. Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme. 4. Assessment The method of assessment will be multiple-choice questions at the end of the course.

5. Delegate numbers The recommended maximum number of delegates per course is 20. The recommended minimum number of delegates per course is 6. 6. Course duration and attendance The course will be delivered over two consecutive days. However, Cskills Awards recognises that training providers may have to deliver this course as two separate non-consecutive days on occasion to meet client needs; however, every effort should be made to run the course by the preferred method. It is important that continuity of training is maintained on this short intensive course. Delegates are required to attend for the full duration of both days. 7. Course progression A natural progression from this course would be to attend the Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) which is at supervisor level or Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme Plus (SEATS+) which is an e-learning course for managers. 8. Course publications Construction Site Safety GE 700 Mandatory 9. Note to training providers The suggested timetable as per section 10 requires the trainer to ask the delegates to pick topics that are relevant to them. The tutor will need to discuss these topics with them and to clear up any areas of misunderstanding.

11. End of course examination rules 11.1 Exam details The examination paper number will be notified when the course booking is accepted by Cskills Awards. The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected by Cskills Awards. It forms a basis of assessment as to whether or not a delegate has successfully achieved the renewal of the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate. The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction Site Safety (GE 700) publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period. The examination pass mark is 72%. 11.2 Re-sits procedure 11.2.1. Obtained marks 64% - 68% Where a delegate has achieved 64% 68% in the examination, the delegate may re-sit the multiple-choice examination by attending another course on the final day and subsequent arrangements will be at the delegate s own expense. The training provider must make the arrangements with the delegate and ensure that the same examination paper is not used twice. The delegate must re-sit the examination within 90 days of the last day previously attended. A charge may be made to the delegate; however, this fee is left entirely to the discretion of the training provider. The training provider may also have additional costs to be recovered from the delegate and these should be agreed in advance. 11.3. Re-sits failing a second re-sit. Delegates are eligible for two re-sits only. Should the delegate fail for a second time, that person will need to attend a full Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course again. 12. Tutor requirements In additional to the minimum tutor requirements, for the courses listed above the tutors must have attended and achieved the course(s) they intend to deliver and hold a current certificate and ONE of the following qualifications: NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Safety and Health NVQ/SVQ Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety* A Health and Safety degree NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health Part 2/ NEBOSH Units A, B, C & D DipSM Level 6
