Cassada was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013. His astronaut candidate training included intensive instruction in International Space Station systems, spacewalks, robotics, and T-38 flight training, among other classes. He was commissioned as a naval officer in 2000, earning his wings of gold as a naval aviator in 2001. Cassada has accumulated more than 2,700 flight hours in 40 different aircraft and 23 combat missions, including Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He is the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He currently serves in the International Space Station Integration Branch working on issues in support of station crews. Dr. Cassada was born in San Diego, California but considers White Bear, Minnesota as home. National Geographic Explorer Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center Big Ten Room A and B Doors open at 6:30pm - First come first served seating Join Erika Bergman, National Geographic Young Explorer, submersible pilot, virtual reality engineer, and ocean explorer on a journey to the deep. She hopes to climb Mt. Everest and one day dive to Challenger Deep. In May of 2013 she was named a National Geographic Young Explorer and shared a series of manned submersible dives through real time video. Erika aims to inspire enthusiasm for ocean awareness using these exciting inner space vehicles. Weaving together her passions for submersible engineering, rich media storytelling, and outreach, she founded Global Engineering & Exploration Counselors (GEECs) to provide a network of engineering camps and mentorship to girls around the world.
