2. HISTORY AND ORGANISATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CASTILLA-LA MANCHA (UCLM) The University of Castilla-La Mancha was officially founded on the 30th of June 1982, through the union of different university centres into a single institution. Although it was not until October 1985 that the UCLM came into full existence, this university is fully integrated in the Spanish university system. Its establishment represents the Region s commitment to providing its own university system at the service of over two million citizens living in the 80,000 square kilometers of its territory (almost 16% of the Spanish square, the third region in Spain, in terms of square). The University of Castilla-La Mancha is a regional institution with around 29,000 students enrolled in any of the four campuses: Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo, also extended to the cities of Almaden and Talavera de la Reina, besides the Puertollano Centre for studies. The Rectorate is located in the campus of Ciudad Real. The academic offer of the university comprises 45 undergraduate programs adapted to the European Space for Higher Education, 24 postgraduate programs and 66 UCLM own degree programs for professional specialization. Apart from that, UCLM offers several seminars, conferences, summer courses, etc. The UCLM Vice-Chancellery of Teaching Staff and International Affairs manages, in collaboration with the so called Offices of International Affairs, the different international programs and activities offered at UCLM with the aim of strengthening the relationships with other Higher Education Institutions, as well as promoting the mobility among UCLM students and staff. For additional information, please visit this link: www.uclm.es/ori/. 2.1. CAMPUS OF ALBACETE The Albacete campus is structured into three parts. The original head is organized around the campus square, consisting of the first cluster of buildings constructed: the Law, and Economics and Business Faculties (Macanaz Building), the Faculty of Education (Simón Abril Building) and the Government Pavilion (José Prat Building). The second is made up by the Institute for Regional Development, the Polytechnic School, the School of Agricultural Engineering and the Benjamín Palencia Multi-purpose Lecture Hall which houses Nursing and Humanities Faculties. And last but not least, the University Residence, Botanical Garden, Institute for Computer Science Research. Next to them, opposite the Provincial Hospital, stands the Faculty of Medicine building and the Regional Center for Biomedical Research (CRIB). 3

Faculty of Nursing in Albacete 2.2. FACULTY OF NURSING The Faculty of Nursing was founded in 2009 after the adaptation of old School of Nursing (created in 1978) degree now. It s located at Benjamin Palencia building and the centre registers around 400 students per year. The academic training of the students can be completed with other extracurricular activities at UCLM, as well as the training proposals for professionals offered at the Faculty http://www.meuesc.posgrado.uclm.es/. It s important to highlight that the degree combines the theory with several internships in hospitals, as well, primary care services, private centers and social service institutions. The academic year at UCLM is divided into two semesters: the winter semester goes from September to December (exams period in January); the spring semester lasts from the beginning of February to the end of May. Christmas and Eastern holidays are considered non-academic periods. The Faculty of Nursing is committed to enhancing the international training of the UCLM students. In this way, the students can apply for different academic exchanges thanks to the bilateral agreements signed by the Faculty with other European and American institutions 4

PRE-ARRIVAL You can find all the information about the admission procedure (documents and deadlines) on this link: www.uclm.es/ori/erasmus/index.aspx The UCLM offers all the international students an intensive course of the Spanish language. Students can apply for it at the above mentioned link. The International Office (commonly known in Spanish as ORI ) usually sends all the incoming students some updated information on this issue. Anyway, here you have the international guide for international students (www.uclm.es/ori/estudiantes_internacionales/guia.asp). - Accommodation: students have two options: hall of residence or a shared flat. The International Office will help all incoming students to find accommodation. - Arriving in Albacete: Albacete is located around 250 km from Madrid. From Madrid airport, students can take the bus or the train to arrive in Albacete. Here they have some instructions: http://www.uclm.es/ori/estudiantes_internacionales/guia.asp#como_llegar - Health Insurance: Those students belonging to the European Union have the right to health assistance in the centres and hospitals depending on or having some kind of agreement with the Social Security Service in Spain. In order to take advantage of this service, all Erasmus students must take with them the form E-128 or E-111, and/or the European Health Card. This card can be requested in the corresponding offices of health assistance in their home country. 4.2. ONCE THEY ARRIVE IN ALBACETE After getting settled into the accommodation, the student should visit the ORI and submit the documents required. After that, the student will go to the Centre where he/she is going to study in order to meet the professor responsible of the exchange program. This coordinator will help the student 10

with the registration procedures and will explain him/her the details of the academic program. Students can also solve their doubts by contacting the Coordinator of International Affairs at the Faculty of Nursing. 11

4.3. DURING THEIR STAY AND AT THE END During their stay in Albacete, students can access some university services offered by UCLM (http://www.uclm.es/ori/estudiantes_internacionales/guia.asp#servicios), for example: - Cicerone program: a Spanish student helps an international student to integrate into the student life inside and outside the university. -Library: international students can use all the services of the UCLM library with a specific card. They can get this library card directly at the library. - Cafeteria and Canteen facilities on campus. - Sports Service: UCLM offers students different sport activities to complete their daily academic duties: www.uclm.es/deportes - Computers room: UCLM provides students with several computer services. Here you have some information: http://alumnos.uclm.es. In the computer rooms students can connect to the university wireless network, check their email account, print their paperwork and so on. Students have to show their student card to access this room. For additional information, please check the following link: http://www.uclm.es/estudiantes/vidauniversitaria/ Once the students finish their stay in Albacete, the UCLM coordinator for International Affairs will issue them a final transcript of records, according to the previously signed learning agreement. 12
