SLA Communiqué 2016 Volume 2 MCI (P) 008/09/2015 TLA Graduation Ceremony 2016 Congratulations to TLA Graduates for their achievements! Held on 22 April 2016 at Furama City Centre Hotel, graduates from the Specialist Training Programmes of The Logistics Academy (TLA) received their much earned Diploma awards at the TLA Graduation Ceremony. TLA Board of Directors, lecturers, sponsors and invited guests shared their joy in reaping the sweet fruits of their labour. Specialist Training Programmes accreditation to its Bachelor of International Logistics (Freight Forwarding). This is in addition to the present accreditation to its Bachelor of Business degree. TLA Advanced Diploma graduates are granted 10 units exemption, and now require only 13 units while TLA Diploma graduates are granted 8 units exemption and require completing 15 units to obtain the degree. Mr Thomas Sim, SLA 1st Deputy Chairman and TLA Director, shared on recent developments in the training arena in his welcome address. He was happy to announce that with the pursuit of Mr John Iversen, a TLA lecturer, the Australia Maritime College University of Tasmania had granted TLA
In another positive development and attributing to the good work of one more TLA lecturer, Dr Ong Geok Quee, the TLA Advanced Diploma in Supply Chain Management now qualifies as entry requirement to the Masters in Supply Chain Management programme offered by the University of Melbourne. The Masters of Supply Chain Management is a Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) accredited degree. Mr Sim was also pleased to announce that the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) has renewed the enhanced funding for TLA s Specialist Training Programmes. Company-sponsored participants can continue to benefit from the support to upgrade themselves. He exhorted all graduates to stay industry relevant at all times, by tapping on the SkillsFuture credit for constant advancement. He urged then to enroll for the TLA s Continuous Learning Programmes listed in the SkillsFuture Directory. The ceremony ended on a high note with sharing from the winner of the Best Achiever Award - Lawrence Chai Khieng Kong, Diploma in Integrated Logistics Management (Dec 2014 Intake): My learning experience with TLA was unforgettable. From the well planned modules to experienced lecturers, the entire programme had equipped us with the theoretical knowledge that we need to know in our daily jobs. Apart from that, the coursework for each module provided lots of opportunity for my classmates and me to work as a team. Those occasions indeed offered us very good exposure and experience, functioning as a group, brainstorming on the topics and learning from each another. Through the knowledge gained from this course, we are well placed to take on new opportunities in our workplace, as we are ready to assume other areas of work. Positive Changes in Work Behavioral through TLA Diploma Song Fou Chian of Keppel Logistics Pte Ltd recently graduated as a proud Diploma holder of TLA Diploma in Integrated Logistics Management (R37 June 2014) at the TLA Graduation Ceremony held on 22 April 2016 at Furama City Centre Hotel. Engaging Ex-Offenders with SCORE About 20 member-representatives attended a briefing session on 29 March 2016 to find out more regarding employment of exoffenders. Ms Juliana Bte Abdul Khalik Director, Reintegration Division and Ms J. Raathiga - Manager (Employer Engagement), Reintegration Division from the Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) explained the process of hiring these ex-offenders, support rendered to both new and existing employers as well as benefits of a potential collaboration. Supervisor Award winner in Year 2014, spoke zealously on their roles and involvement in working alongside ex-offenders. The introductory session had instilled several members to offer employment opportunities to ex-offenders. Mr Poh Kay Leong General Manager, shared on the corporate trust while Mr Raven Lee Business Development Manager and Mr Mohamed Zamir Senior Supervisor who was also the Model Container Transport Performance Measurement At the invitation of the Centre of Innovation Supply Chain Management (COI-SCM), close to 20 representatives from 10 member-companies attended a session on 26 April 2016 at Republic Polytechnic to gain an appreciation on Container Transport Performance Measurement. Using real historical data of a member-company, Mr Dennis Quek Director, COI-SCM shared the insights from the analysis, and how those findings can translate to productivity improvement opportunities for companies and the industry. Launch of TR 46 : 2016 Technical Reference for last mile delivery ecommerce data interchange The Singapore Manufacturing Federation - Standards Development Organisation (SMF-SDO), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and SPRING Singapore jointly launched the Technical Reference TR46:2016 for Last Mile Delivery ecommerce Data Interchange on 12 April 2016. ecommerce retailers and logistics service providers can now look forward to streamlining delivery processes by implementing the TR46. A world s first, TR46 provides guidelines for companies to adopt a common dataset to boost efficiency by reducing time, minimising errors in the process chain and providing a seamless transactional experience for customers. TR46 is the culmination of efforts by key industry representatives in the Last Mile Delivery Working Group of the Technical Committee for Logistics, which comes under the purview of the Manufacturing Standards Committee managed by SMF-SDO. FIATA HQ Session 2016 Mr Stanley Lim Chairman and Mr Thomas Sim First Deputy Chairman joined some 239 delegates from 51 countries at the FIATA HQ Session held from 17 to 20 March 2016 in Zurich, Switzerland. Chongqing Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone Coordinated by IE Singapore, a delegation headed by Mr Liu Yun Director from China s Chongqing Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone visited SLA on 02 March 2016. A round-table discussion with 9 representatives from 8 SLA member-companies was convened, touching on investments and operating in Chongqing in view of favourable policies and attractive incentives. Singapore and China had signed a bilateral agreement on strategic cooperation located in Chongqing. There are four strategic sectors namely transport & logistics, finance, telecoms and aerospace. Mr Stanley Lim Chairman presided the meeting together with Ms Ng Soo Hwa Executive Director and Mr Max Ee Training and Development Committee Member. Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Mr Masaharu Nozawa Executive Director and Secretary General of Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Inc (JIFFA) called on SLA on 27 April 2016. He was received by Mr Stanley Lim Chairman and Mr Thomas Sim First Deputy Chairman together with the Secretariat. Besides exchanging information on the activities of both associations as well as the economic situations and education systems of both countries, the discussions centred on the steps taken by both countries in preparation for the implementation of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulation that would take effect from 01 July 2016. 05

Guideline to the Implementation of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) on 01 July 2016 (Extracted from a presentation by Capt. M Segar, Assistant Chief Executive (Operations) of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) during the Seminar on SOLAS Container Weight Regulations, Chapter VI Regulation 2 held on 10 June 2016.) The Last Mile Fulfilment Asia (LMFAsia) 2016 SLA supported and participated as an exhibitor at the Last Mile Fulfilment Asia (LMFAsia) from 03 to 04 March 2016 at Singapore EXPO. Organised by SingEx Exhibitions with the theme ecommerce Beyond Borders, the conference featured a strong line up of over 70 international speakers across the retail, ecommerce, logistics, and parcel industries, along with multinational exhibitors that showcase their products, innovations and solutions from the entire fulfilment ecosystem. The SLA booth showcased SLA membership and training programmes offered by the Logistics Academy. Internet of Things (IoT) Asia 2016 Jointly organised by the Singapore Industrial Automation Association (SIAA) and and SingEx Exhibitions, the Internet of Things (IoT) Asia was held from 30 to 31 March 2016 at Singapore EXPO, with SLA as one of the supporting organizations. Themed Losing the Gap: from Vision to Reality, the event was graced by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister-in-Charge of Smart Nation Initiative. The event revealed new insights on emerging trends, new key technologies and directions for IoT s proliferation in the region. It also stimulated indepth discussions to drive business collaborations in the region and undertake the real nuts and bolts of IoT implementation to make it a reality. 07
Career Fair in the Heartlands for Logistics & Supply Chain Sectors Organized by Singapore Workforce Development Agency, the Career Fair in the Heartlands for Logistics & Supply Chain Sectors was held on 01 March 2016 at Tampines North Community Centre. The event was targeted at the rank and file and some 100 ranging from new entrants to mature job seekers were present. Mr John Iversen Council Member represented the Association and presented on the nature of jobs in logistics, career pathway as well as courses available for upgrading and enhanced career progression. Interested candidates had the opportunity to participate in spot interviews for various job openings with five SLA member-companies namely, A-Sonic Logistics Pte Ltd, Nippon Express (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Richland Logistics Services Pte Ltd, Schenker Singapore (Pte) Ltd and ST Logistics Pte Ltd. They also had an overview of the comprehensive training programmes offered by The Logistics Academy Pte Ltd at the exhibition booth. PSA Port Tour On 16 March 2016, PSA hosted a port tour to Pasir Panjang Terminal for 14 participants from the TLA Diploma in International Freight Management (IFM) - March 2015 and July 2015 intakes. The tour started with the introduction of the port by way of a corporate video, followed by a glimpse of the round-the-clock vast port operation at Pasir Panjang Terminal. It was an eye opener for many of the participants. Appreciate The Logistics Academy for organizing the PSA port tour as it allows me to witness real time operations at PSA. The short video on PSA's history & accomplishments provides new knowledge on the port. To see the stevedores at work and vessels with registrations from different countries is amazing.
