FEATURED SESSIONS OPENING SESSION-VALUE-BASED HEALTH CARE AND THE FUTURE OF SURGICAL SERVICES David C. He will share his insights on the key financial forces in the current health care system and their implications for the business of surgical services and what you need to consider to remain profitable. GENERAL SESSION-PERIOPERATIVE RESEARCH, PREVENTING BURNOUT, AND IMPROVING PERSONAL RESILIENCE J. Bryan Sexton For each feeling of burnout, there is opportunity for resilience. It s all two sides of the same coin, said J. Bryan Sexton, associate professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke s School of Medicine and an expert in the idea of resilience, the ability to bounce back from life s obstacles. The trick is to build mental muscles to deal with challenges thrown our way, both personally and professionally, when many feel like they re asked to do more. Sexton will share three ways to deal with the threat of burnout and increase resilience. HIRING TO FIT: PARTNERSHIPS MAKE SUCCESS SEAMLESS Charlotte Guglielmi, MA, BSN, RN, CNOR; Elena Canacari, BSN, RN, CNOR; Laura Robinson Learn to think differently about the hiring process and explore seamless hiring. The hiring process for new employees needs to be innovative, seamless, and mission-centered to be successful in today s everchanging health care market. The days of doing it the same way every time are gone. Diversity of the workforce across generations, cultures, and experience require an adaptive process. New employees need to be knowledgeable and skilled, and they must fit into the culture and be able to embrace the mission of the facility. Strategies on how to make the transition from student to staff and the role of the point-of-care educator will be discussed. SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE IN THE PERIOPERATIVE ENVIRONMENT Patrice P. Tisdale, MSN, RN, CNOR; Timothy Flinn Smith, MPH The fast pace and high pressure of the perioperative environment can create a stressful workplace and unintentionally drive resistance to change. Utilizing a pragmatic approach to empower leaders and clinicians to assess, develop, and adopt new strategies builds a sustainable change-ready culture for getting results in the rapidly changing health care landscape. Get the tools and strategies you need to assess and define change readiness and the assessment of the state of the environment, and learn to apply these strategies in a practical manner. THE CHALLENGES OF OR CONSTRUCTION Heather A. Hohenberger, MSN, RN, CIC, CNOR, CPHQ; Kevin L. Downey, AIA, ACHA Perioperative space design, construction, and renovation can be a complex process requiring a multidisciplinary team composed of perioperative leadership, physicians, executive leaders, infection preventionists, maintenance, and architects. Completion of a perioperative space renovation can seem daunting, but having an understanding of key concepts and the phases of the project can expedite the process. This session will provide knowledge transfer from the architectural and infection prevention perspectives with session attendees.
