President s Message COL(Retired) DeLloyd Voorhees Wow! How time flies. The Sunshine Chapter celebrated the 242 nd birthday of the United States Army in style at the Rosen Centre on the 10 th of June. Starting off our evening at the VIP Reception, the Chapter Executive VP, Dalia Dee Espeut- Jones presented awards to the Soldiers and NCOs of the Year from the 2-124 th Infantry Regiment Florida Army National Guard; the 143 rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary); the Recruiter of the Year and Mentor of the Year from the Orlando Recruiting Company; 2-485 th Battalion Drill Sergeant of the Year; the PEO STRI Team and Individual of the Year; and the ACC-Orlando Acquisition Team and Individual of the Year.
Special recognition awards consisting of a Doughboy Statue were presented to LTC (Retired) Ed Kennedy who brought his collection of World War I memorabilia from Huntsville, AL to display and to Mr. Harris Rosen, our host for the last few Army Birthday celebrations.
We were honored to have BG William Cole, the Program Executive Officer for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation join us as our senior officer. Additionally, we were pleased to have Ms. Kris McBride, our AUSA 3rd Region President join us for the evening. Our guest speaker, Dr. Monique Seefried gave us a greater appreciation of the contribution our Army made helping end World War I 100 years ago. It was my pleasure to also present her with a Doughboy statue.
The David G. Halloran Award was presented to Capital Communications & Consulting, LLC. Accepting the award was Ms. Mary Trier, the President and our former Chapter and 3 rd Region President. The Earle L. Denton award was presented to COL (Retired) Joe O Connell. Voting for these two awards was very competitive this year. Congratulations to both of you.
The evening could not have been the success it was without our Army Ball Planning team led by our Executive VP, Dee Jones, and the tremendous support we received from our Corporate Sponsors. Thank you for the wonderful evening! See more photos from this year s Army Ball HERE! We no sooner wrapped up our Army Ball Hot Wash and we found ourselves in the final planning for the first ever, Army vs Navy, Clash in the Grass, or our combined Sunshine Chapter and Central Florida Navy League Golf Tournament at Timacuan Golf Club, on Friday, 14 July. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Jeff Moss, our Golf Planning Committee member.
Dee Jones attended President s Training in August as she prepares to take the reins next July. Great photo of her on the website with our former Army Ball Lead, Colonel Mike Flanagan who was attending the same class as he has assumed the Fort Lee Chapter Presidency. October found us preparing for and participating in a successful AUSA National Meeting. Dee Jones attended additional Chapter Leader Training on Sunday afternoon and that evening attended the Chapter President s Dinner with Debbie Berry (past Chapter President). The Chapter provided tickets to the Corporate Member Luncheon; Eisenhower Luncheon; ROTC Luncheon; the 3 rd Region Breakfast and the Marshall Dinner. We were able to establish our Meeting Room and Hospitality Suite at the Marriott Marquis Cherry Blossom Room due to the terrific support we had from our Corporate Members.
