Progress reports will go home this week to notify families if a student is not currently passing a class. Please check your student s grades on School Loop and contact teachers if you are concerned about a grade in a particular class. I encourage all parents to take advantage of our wonderful counseling staff and to contact grade level Assistant Principals if you feel your student needs additional individual attention. Spirit Week is taking place during the week of October 8 through October 13. The Homecoming Dance is on October 13.. I want to encourage the entire Washington community to attend our Homecoming Football game on October 12 and watch the Huskies beat Irvington High School. This is shaping up to be a great game to watch. General admission ticket can be purchased thru our website later this week. With a pre-purchased ticket you will not have to wait in line at the ticket booth. October is also a month for students to begin focusing their attention on post-secondary goals. The PSAT, a test taken to help prepare students for the SAT, will be given on the Washington Campus on October 10. All sophomores will be given the test free of charge. Juniors must register to take the test and the cost of the test is $25.00. Juniors taking the test and placing in the top 1% will qualify to earn a National Merit Scholarship. Registration is taking place right now. Juniors can register and pay for the test with the Account Clerk, Mrs. Carleen Jung. The last day for juniors to register and pay for the PSAT is Friday, September 5. For more information, please refer to the Washington High School website. Seniors who are eligible for C.S.U. and U.C. Universities can begin to submit applications to these institutions on October 1 st and November 1 st respectively. The deadline is November 30 th. The CSU application website is csumentor.edu, and the U.C. application website is universityofcalifornia.edu/apply. If you have any questions about your student s transcript or whether they qualify for a C.S.U or U.C. University please make an appointment with our counseling staff. A workshop on Financial Aid will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the WHS cafeteria. Washington has wonderful PTSA and Booster organizations. These organizations are responsible for funding and organizing many of the best programs on the Washington campus. I encourage parents and guardians to get involved. The PTSA membership is $11 to join, however, anyone can attend the meetings which are held at 7:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in the Library. The Boosters meet in the Student Union on the second Monday of every month and that meeting also starts at 7:00 p.m. To join Boosters, or to get more information on the Boosters organization, please visit: www.whsbooster.net Sincerely, Bob Moran, Principal

IMPORTANT DATES Parking on the Washington High School campus is very limited. All spaces in the Fremont parking lot and the Eggers parking lot are assigned to a Washington High School staff member. We ask if you are visiting the campus, to please park in the visitor s parking spots located in the Fremont parking lot, first aisle as you enter and facing Fremont Blvd. This is very important for visitors who are attending a school meeting prior to the start of school. Often, staff arrives to begin their day only to be delayed due to their space being occupied. Thank you for your understanding and consideration. COLLEGE APPLICATION CHECKLIST WHAT TO DO FIRST when applying to 4 Year Colleges.. ESSAYS: UC requires that students respond to four of eight prompts with a limit of 350 words for each prompt. Private colleges vary in the questions and essays they require, so it is important that seniors get this information as soon as possible at the beginning of the school year. (No essays for CSU s) PRIVATE COLLEGES: LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION and SECONDARY SCHOOL REPORTS: Letters of Recommendation DEADLINE: OCTOBER 15! Visit the Private College information page on the WHS website at: www.fremont.k12.ca.us/page/11963. THE APPLICATION: NOVEMBER 30 DEADLINE FOR UC S AND CSU S Before you sit down to begin your application, have the following information readily available. Create a user name and password for your online application so that if you are unable to finish your application in one sitting, you can return to it with your previous input saved. Check with private college for deadlines. When the application is complete and submitted, print a copy of the receipt page for your records. If sending a paper application, get a Certificate of Mailing from the post office for your records. 1. WHS CEEB Code: 050972 2. Social Security Number: If you have one 3. UC ELC ID number: If you were invited to apply to a UC through the Eligibility in the Local Context program, you received a letter giving you a 12 digit ID number (UC only) 4. Test Score Reports: SAT or ACT (ACT with Writing for UC) must be taken preferably by November; not later than December. SAT Subject Tests can be submitted just as AP scores are. Arrange with ACT or SAT to have your scores sent to the colleges you are applying to. When registering for a test, students can select up to 4 colleges to have scores sent to. Any additional colleges or to send scores at a later time will involve a fee. You must also provide your exact SAT and/or ACT scores on your college application. You can choose to report Advanced Placement and TOEFL exam scores (a special test for students who s second language is English and who have completed the 4 year college prep English requirement), if applicable. If you plan to take any of these tests in the future, you will need to know your expected test date. Request test score reports online by establishing a user name and password at: ACT: act.org and/or SAT: Collegeboard.com

6. High School and/or College Transcripts: Your unofficial transcript has been given to you which you will use when completing the application. Make sure they include your school names and addresses, the dates you attended, classes you took and the grades you earned. If you repeated a class, enter the new grade; not the original grade. Classes taken at a college need to be reported in the same way in the appropriate section of the application. At the end of the school year, have your final transcript sent to the college you will be attending. 12. Mid-year reports: Private colleges often require the student s counselor to complete a mid-year report; most are done through Common App or Send.edu. This report asks for first semester grades, changes in the academic program (classes) that differ from courses on the original application and any other changes in a student s status 13. Financial Aid and Scholarships: Complete the FAFSA online between October 1 and March 2 for federal financial aid. Parental input is important to a number of the questions.
