All employees are required to log into TheHUB, to review and acknowledge an understanding of these Office Policies within 30 days. Employees are reminded that The Briefing Board has the same force and effect of policy. Division commanders shall ensure that employees have access to a copy of this Briefing Board announcement. Related Information MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF S OFFICE POLICY AND Subject MANAGEMENT OF SHERIFF S OFFICE BADGES Supersedes GC-2 (01-24-14) Policy Number GC-2 Effective Date 03-08-17 PURPOSE The purpose of this Policy is to establish guidelines for the management and control of all badges issued by the Office. POLICY It is the policy of the Office to maintain strict management and control of all badges issued by the Office. Badge: A six-point badge issued by the Office and worn by compensated deputies, reserve deputies, and detention officers when in uniform. Flat Badge: A six-point badge and case combination issued by the Office to all deputies. 1. Responsibility for Badges: The responsibility for management and control of Office issued badges is shared by the Personnel Services Division, the Posse Operations Section of the Enforcement Support Division, and command staff. A. The Personnel Services Division shall be responsible for the procurement of all compensated and reserve deputy badges, and detention officer badges, and for the maintenance of records. The records shall include an inventory and accountability for all badge items required to be tracked while owned by the Office. B. Posse badges are procured, issued, and accounted for by the Enforcement Support Division personnel and shall be the responsibility of the Posse Operation Section. C. Command staff shall be responsible for the procurement of all special deputy badges. D. Cross certification law enforcement officers will not be issued an Office badge. 2. Security, Distribution, and Issuance of Badges: The Personnel Services Division maintains the inventory and is responsible for the security, distribution, and issuance of the badges for all compensated and reserve deputies and detention officers. The Enforcement Support Division is responsible for the security, distribution, and issuance of all posse badges. Command staff is responsible for the security, distribution, and issuance of any special deputy badges.

Policy GC-2, Management of Sheriff s Office Badges Effective Date: 03-08-17 A. Badge records shall indicate the date and the name of the person who issued the badge and the person to whom the badge was issued. B. When a badge is damaged or destroyed, it shall be replaced in a timely manner with a new badge. C. All found and recovered stolen compensated and reserve deputy, and detention officer badges will be returned to the Personnel Services Division. D. All found and recovered stolen posse badges shall be returned to the Enforcement Support Division. E. All found and recovered stolen special deputy badges shall be returned to the Chief Deputy or his designee. 3. Employee Accountability for Badges: Employees shall be held accountable for the negligent loss, misuse, or abuse of Office-issued badges and may also be criminally or civilly liable. 4. Badges for Transfer from/to Special Assignment: When an individual is transferred from a specialized assignment that provides a distinctive flat badge, such as detective, the flat badge shall be returned to the Personnel Services Division within five business days of the transfer and, in the case of deputies, exchanged for a flat badge for the employee s current assignment. Likewise, upon request of the transferee s division or section commander, when an individual is transferred into a specialized assignment the appropriate badge shall be issued by the Personnel Services Division. A. Detectives who have been issued a detective badge, have their detective certification, and are being transferred to a non-detective assignment may request to purchase their detective badge by submitting a memorandum through their chain of command to their respective bureau commander. B. Deputies assigned to non-detective assignments shall not wear or display a detective badge. 5. Return of Badges upon Promotion or Demotion: An employee who is promoted or demoted and is therefore no longer authorized to display the same badge shall return his badge to the Personnel Services Division within five business days of the promotion or demotion for exchange. Upon promotion, the employee is provided an opportunity to purchase the badge from his previous rank. 6. Return of Badges upon Resignation/Dismissal: Upon an individual s resignation, or dismissal, all Officeowned equipment, including badges, shall be immediately returned to the Training Division. The Training Division shall be responsible for returning the badges to the division responsible for them, as specified in this Policy. Employees who resign or who are dismissed from employment shall not be afforded the opportunity to purchase their badge. 7. Retirement: Upon retirement, the Office will present the retiring officer with a plaque on which his breast badge will be mounted, as long as the employee is retiring in good standing with the Office, as determined by the employee s bureau chief A. Employees who are retiring in good standing may purchase badges for all previous ranks held, upon request. B. Employees critically injured on duty and medically retired, may receive their badge at no cost to the employee. In certain circumstances, the employee s immediate family member may receive the employee s badge on behalf of the employee. 2

If an employee suffers a line of duty death, the employee s immediate family member is authorized to receive the employee s badge, at no cost. 8. Reporting of Missing/Lost/Stolen/Damaged Badges: When an Office-issued badge is missing or has been lost, stolen, or damaged, the employee shall report the incident to his immediate supervisor no later than the start of his next shift. A. The employee shall make an entry into the Blue Team application under Employee Reported Activity. B. In all cases, excluding damage, an Office or other agency Incident Report (IR) shall be completed. C. The employee shall prepare a memorandum detailing the circumstances, including the IR number and the agency if applicable, and forward the memo with a copy of the IR through the chain of command to the Personnel Services Division. D. Upon receipt of the memorandum and with the proper authorization from the employee s chain of command, the Personnel Services Division shall notify the Operation Information Center (OIC) Section supervisor and replace the badge. E. The OIC Section shall enter the lost or stolen badge information into the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Crime Information Center (NCIC) System. 3
