Appendix A Governor s Report March 12, 2011 Since the last Board Meeting on January 15, I have attended the following: Regional Governors Conference in Indianapolis; 5 Suncrest Kiwanis Club meetings; and Organizational Meeting of Greenbrier Valley Kiwanis. On February 22 I made my third trip to Lewisburg for the Organizational Meeting of the Greenbrier Valley Kiwanis, attended by 14 of the 26 initial Charter Members. A full slate of officers and board members was elected and all Bylaws and other relevant business decisions were made. The materials were sent in to Kiwanis International before the end of February. I produced and distributed the February and March editions of Dean s Digest, the Governor s newsletter. I updated the new West Virginia Kiwanis District website and District Directory. I completed planning and organization for the 2011 Mid-Year Conference. I will be attending the following: WV Key Club District Convention on March 25-27; Wellsburg Kiwanis 90 th Anniversary celebration on April 2; Key Club Board Training conference on April 15-17; and Eliminate Project Training in Indianapolis on May 5-7. I will be assisting Lt. Governor Daniel Savage in completing the organization of the Madison-Danville Kiwanis in March, and will begin work on rebuilding the Weston Kiwanis in April. We send 1-3 of our members to their meetings and projects. -We just got word that one of our former members, Fr. Al, passed away on March 6, 2011. WELLSBURG: -Christmas Luminary Sale successfully completed with a profit -Landmark Ornaments sale is going on and doing well. We are going to be raffling a larger version of all five ornaments.

-Our annual Pancake Supper will be held on April 26 at the Wellsburg Moose from 3:00 to 7:00. Also at the supper we will have a Brown Bag Surprise Auction. -Our 90th year Anniversary Celebration will be held April 2, 2011 at the Serbian Cultural Center in Weirton. Social Hour at 5:30 followed by dinner at 6:30. $20/person meal. Keynote speaker will be Governor Kevin Dean. -Our Newest K Kids of Hooverson Heights Program received their Charter. Charter number is 1804 and our Franklin Primary K Kids Charter number is 85! That means a great number of K Kids Clubs have been started throughout Kiwanis. -February 9th we gave out our Legion of Honor Awards and Perfect Attendance Awards. Legion of Honor winners: Bob Hass 35 Bill Metzger 35 Leon Cox 40 Robert Wall 40 Also on February 9th we presented Janice Smith with the Hixson Award. -Chicken BBQ will be June 22, 2011 at the Brooke County Board of Education Office. WEIRTON: The Weirton Club has done the following in Division One starting 10/1/10: -Had officers training. President and Secretary attended. -Had new member orientation at our Installation Luncheon 9/21/10 -Sponsored Terrific Kid programs in Hancock/Brooke Elementary Schools; Weirton Height Elem., Colliers Elem., Milsop Elem., Liberty Elem., I was just asked to include Hooverson Heights Elem for next year. -Sponsor of Weir High Key Club, Weirton Middle School Builders Club, and the newly formed Weirton Kiwanis Aktion Club. (The first in the WV District). -We also sponsor Little League basketball team at the Milsop Community Center. -We support our Local Chamber of Commerce by being a member. -We donated $500.00 to the Weirton United Way Campaign again this year. -We donated $50.00 to the Salvation Army for their use during the Holiday season. -We gave to the Kiwanis International Foundation and the WV District Foundation again this year. -We attended the Installation events at the Wellsbrug, Wheeling, Moundsville -We invited the Kiwanis Clubs in Division to join us for dinner and a night at Mountaineer in October 2010. A good time was had by all. -We had Peanut Day also and raised $200.00 -We helped the Salvation Army take applications for toys and food and rand the bell for them. -We put a Kiwanis Christmas Tree in the Milsop community Christmas Tree Contest. -We donated hats, gloves, scarves and books to the Mario Pipinos Head Start Center here in Weirton. -We had a Christmas fundraiser by Selling chances on a Lottery Tree given on 12/31/10. We raised $600.00 -We celebrated the charter meeting for our Aktion Club on January 27th. It was very exciting for all those who attended especially the members of the club. They are very excited and proud of their new club and are very busy. They have had two board meetings and gave a Valentine Day Dance on February 13th where they raised over $200.00. Their next board meeting is scheduled for March 18th at 3:00 also at the Workshop. I am told that they already have 5 people interested in joining their club. What an example they are to the rest of us as Kiwanians. If anyone would like to attend please come. They would be very happy to have you. The contact is Tammy Mankowski at the Workshop. -We are in the planning stages of our annual radio auction which is in its 60th year. The date is April 9th, Saturday and will be held at the WEIR station on PA Avenue in Weirton. -Gus and Aggie Monezis are in the process of the Spring Dance for the Sheltered Workshop which will be on Tuesday, April 12th at the Serbian Cultural Center. All of you are invited to attend and see what a great job they do! Believe me you will be touched. -We have 3 members planning to attend the Mid Year Convention. Tina Larch, Walter Larch, and Mary Kay Olashuk. Mary Kay Olashuk is also going to the International Convention. -We are supporting the Kiwanis Mid Year and Key Club Convention with a half page ad in their event. We are paying the Key Club Advisors (2) expenses to the convention also. -And lat put not least, The Weirton Kiwanis Club ahs just received a new member application from the City of Weirton and are in the process of completing the app. -On that note we end this report and wish our District well at the Mid Year. WHEELING:

-Wheeling is gearing up for our annual fundraiser, March 31. The grand prize is $10,000 (which may be shared if a certain number of finalists agree to split) and our earnings are anything over the $10,000 prize. Typically we profit $10,000-$12,000 each year which funds our projects/donations for the year. -Also upcoming are our spring service projects: -We do the Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia Society on April 27; -Our club coordinates the St Luke s on the Island Soup Kitchen year-round and cooks and serves 4 times a year coming up on May 29; -We order and pay for lunch for the Special Olympics kids and their volunteers at their annual athletic event and we serve the food, a very gratifying event the last weekend of April; -Our Fresh Air Farm activity really kicks off in the spring and summer. Boy Scouts used it for a survival camp in January & February. The House of the Carpenter and the Children s Museum of the Ohio Valley run back-to-back summer camps in June, July & August. Other groups that use the facilities are church groups, Americorps volunteers, Search and Rescue among others. All eligible groups are allowed to use the camp free of charge. -Our annual scholarship applications are out to our 3 Key Clubs. We choose 1 new scholarship recipient every year, and have four concurrent scholarship recipients at any given time. The award, announced every May, is a $1,000 x 4 years or $4,000 in total. Students have to maintain a 2.5 GPA. Our dedicated judges are rotated from local colleges. LTG REPORT: 1/10/11: e-mailed Division 1 RE: Online Club Reports 1/27/11: Attended the Weirton Aktion Cub meeting, installed all their members and officers. It was a wonderful time and I was very blessed to be able to be there for that event! 2/9/11: Attended the Wellsburg Kiwanis Awards Banquet at the Wellsburg Moose. 2/24/11: e-mailed Division 1 RE: Division 1 Meeting Date 3/2/11: e-mailed Division 1 RE: Meeting Agenda, Needing service projects, meetings, fundraising dates for newsletter, Kiwanis One Day poster, information on Dave Fuller, Club report request for board meeting 3/2/11: snail mailed letter with delegate forms 3/3/11: e-mailed Division 1 Newsletter Division 1 Dish 3/4/11: Division 1 Meeting. We discussed possible new locations of clubs, LTG for 2011/2012, Mid Year, Membership, Sponsored Youth Programs, Online Training, Communication. 3/12/11: I m here at Mid Year!!! Issues: I am still having NO communication with Chester club. They have not submitted club reports online nor have they paid dues. I have called, emailed, sent mail and I have no response from them. -The other issues are communication. It is VITAL to this organization to have communication. My most of my clubs are not informing me of dates to events, service projects, fundraisers, and special meetings. How can I help or be effective if I do not know what is going on? Furthermore how can we support each other (example: clubs attending each other s events/service projects/fundraisers) if we do not let each other know what is going on. We should not wait till board meetings or division meetings to find out what is going on with each club! -I was MIA for a few months due to some personal issues. However, I am back and during that time I made my self available to my Division via e-mail and phone calls (home or cell) evenings and weekends. -Happy Mid Year West Virginia Kiwanis and I hope everyone has a fantastic time! Don t forget to stop over and visit with West Virginia Circle K at the Microtel (Just across the parking lot)! Division 2 Divisional Report Barbara Ott I am fulfilling the unexpired term of Senta Provost, Lt. Govenor of Division 2. I have attempted to contacted the Parkersburg Downtown Club and have had zero response. I understand they have four paid members as of 9/30/2010. Wayne Sanders, Past-Lt. Governor of Division 2, made several attempts to revitalize the club, but to no avail. I plan to do some additional follow-up with this club. John Webb contacted a former St. Marys Kiwanian about restarting a Kiwanis Club in St. Marys. However, John was informed by this individual, that a Lions Club was formed and has since dissolved. We would still like to pursue the possibility of forming a club there since there was a Key Club at the high school.

The North Parkersburg Club gave 40 books to Pre-K students at Martin Elementary School and 40 books to the Pre- K students at the Franklin Elementary School. Four Parkersburg South High School Key Club members read to the children at the Franklin School event. The distribution of the books is made possible by the collection of K dollars by the members of the club. Over 320 books have been purchased using the K dollars. Also, 16 Library books were purchased to the 16 schools where the North Parkersburg Kiwanis Club sponsors a Service Leadership Program. Since the collection of K dollars began the members have collected over 1800 K dollars. Arrangements are being made to hold a meeting at the Wyngate Senior Living Community where two of the club members reside. It is a new concept of bringing a club meeting to some of our SENIOR club members. The membership of the North Parkersburg Club remains at 50. Four new members have joined the club, but unfortunately two members have passed away, and two were dropped for the lack of dues payment. SLP REPORT BY BARBARA OTT The PHS Key Club sponsored a PB&J (Parents Buddy and Join) event on Saturday, February 26 from 2-4pm with 15 parents and friends of PHS Key Club members attending. The Key Club members planned and carried out the event with a powerpoint information presentation about Kiwanis and Key Club and the need to support both organizations. Eight Kiwanis applications were distributed to parents and friends attending. Follow-up membership invitations will be sent to these individuals. However, the refreshments did NOT consist of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. A Circle-K organizational and informational meeting was held at WVU-P on March 2 led by Christa Fry, and Chad from Marshall University Circle-K and Chad Gardner from Marietta College Circle- K. Bill and Barbara Ott attended from the North Parkersburg Kiwanis Club. Five prospective members were present and several students gave their names to Christa and Chad as interested in the formation of a club. A second meeting was held on Monday, March 7 and club officers were elected. Next meeting will be held following the spring breaks of Marshall University and Marietta College. K-Kids program at Neale Elementary School is currently in limbo do to the retirement of the advisor and no faculty member would accept the responsibility of being the advisor of the club. We are currently working with two parents to reorganize the K-Kids Club at the school. I would appreciate information from any of the District Kiwanis Clubs of new Service Leadership Program clubs being formed so that I can continue follow-up. Division 3 Division Report Sherry Charles North Harrison - Kevin Nuzum We gave $100.00 to the Airport for a defibulator. We sent a letter to the Harrison County School Board endorsing a new North Harrison Middle School which is the area we serve as Kiwanians. We have not done much due to weather. We have been meeting once a month on Wednesdays at Noon at Jimmy's Diner. We always have 2 Key Clubbers present and we take care of their lunch. We also meet on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30p.m. We have been planning events for the spring. Our club will be sponsoring the Kiwanis Store at the Mid Year conference and our key clubbers will be helping us. We attended a Key Club meeting at Lincoln High School on Thursday morning. We took Kiwanis booklets and brochures to recruit their parents. We will be participating in Kiwanis ONE day on April 2 with our Key Club. We will be collecting food for the Lord's Pantry and we will be doing a trash pick-up in Haywood and Lumberport. See you on Saturday. The Bridgeport Club is having Buckwheat Day on March 19th at the Benedum center. Ray Richardson, President of the Fairmont Kiwanis Club: Last fall the Fairmont Club had a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser with the White Hall Club. We stuffed envelopes for the Union Mission for their mass mailing. We rang bells for the Salvation Army. Over the winter months we reached out to our non-attending members and invited them to our February meetings. In March we are inviting about 25 potential members to attend one of the March meetings. We are now having our Club Board Meetings on the first Wednesday of each month. We are planning a Kiwanis Pancake Day breakfast/luncheon from 8 AM to 2 PM on March 26th at First Baptist Church on Fairmont Avenue. Surrounding Kiwanis Clubs encouraged to attend. The Key Clubbers from Fairmont Senior H.S. and East Fairmont H.S. have been attending our Kiwanis meetings. We are planning a fund-raiser for

the ELIMINATE PROJECT on April 2 although plans are still being made." On March 16th we are having a "Green" Kiwanis meeting celebrating St. Patrick's day along with a "Green" luncheon. We are planning to establish a new Builders Club at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. On April 2 a fund-raiser for the Kiwanis World-wide Service Project is being planned for the Eliminate Project in cooperation with our Key Clubs. We have six members of our Club planning to attend the Mid-Year Conference. We are looking forward to seeing you there. Jim Harris- Clarksburg Kiwanis has been very busy in the past weeks. During February our club sponsored Bingo at the Maplewood Senior Living Community for residents on each Thursday evening. We had an average of 4 members each night (4 nights in all) attend the event and we called the bingo games, provided the prizes for the players and spent a great evening with residents at the Meadows (Maplewood) Our own Ky Jenkins, Clarksburg Kiwanis member, is director of Marketing at the facility and we have participated with the group in previous bingo events. Our club also provided a Welcome Basket for the first new baby boy born at UHC in January. We just completed the 35 Annual Radio Thon fund raising event held with WPDX Radio and our members sold 5-30 second ads to area businesses and supporters for $75.00 each. This may be the most successful event to date in the 35 years of holding Radio thon and this is the only major fundraising event held by Kiwanis Club of Clarksburg. We are sponsoring area youth sports teams, Harrison County Student Achievement Scholarships and of course the area Key Clubs are active as well. At our most recent meeting, Notre Dame Key Club members Colin Frosh and Joe Greer attended and provided a brief update of their activities. We are also planning a "field trip" to visit the Belden Brick factory in Amish Country in Ohio on April 5th and those details are being worked out even as I write this email. That is a brief picture of what is happening with Kiwanis Club of Clarksburg - "Serving for over 90 Years" Clarksburg also partnered with Bridgeport, Salem/Doddridge and Northern Harrison County and purchased an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for the North Central Regional Airport in Bridgeport. This device cost $1,295.00 and Clarksburg funded $1,000.00 of the price. The unit is mounted on the wall at the airport now and we will be purchasing appropriate sign/plaque to recognize area Kiwanis for providing this potentially life-saving device for those traveling in and out of our local airport. This was done in February (Heart Month) as a project for our club Division 4 - No Report Rachel Varner for Lt. Gov. possibility Division 5 Board Report Gary Stickley Keyser Evening club-some setbacks on fundraisers: one that we have cancelled not able to reschedule facility (January); three other events at which we run concession stand cancelled.(march, May, July).Sponsorship fee for Little League (TWO TEAMS, major team, minor team)$500;we THE PEOPLE TEAM FROM Keyser HS trip $50.00;Big brother/big sister program $100.00; have also donated to some other budgeted items; planning for upcoming fundraising season. Keyser Breakfast: Christmas Angel (where club adopts a family for Christmas time); Christmas social at Cumberland, MD ; some of their budgeted items paid; just recently had a successful French bread and soup sale fundraiser. Petersburg: has taken in one new member, prospects look good for a second new member. They have gone back to meeting at noon both on the first and third Mondays of the month. Potomac State Circle K: president transferred to WVU, vice president has stepped up and taken over; they will be doing some of their already planned projects, including health screening in April;

Keyser High School Key Club: not active, no advisor/sponsor available Keyser Primary-Middle School builders Club: not active, no advisor/sponsor available We will try to get something set up for next school year, hopefully. Potential company/site club: Alleghany Ballistics Laboratory, new site manager replaced local person who was site manager, still preparing packet to send to see if we would be allowed to propose a company or/and site club, this would most likely have to go to their corporate people and the Navy for approval before we would be allowed to make proposal to them and/or employees. We have asked both clubs (Keyser Breakfast; Petersburg) to see if they might have a potential Lieutenant governor for 2011-2012. A lot of Focus have been on the Danville Madison Club and also Chapmanville. Logan just finished their pancake day very successful the club decided to move their annual bicycle rally to April instead of August because of the heat, club is growing and doing well Chapmanville is dong their annual fundraiser the Pancake and silent auction, working on recurting some new members for the Chapmanville Club. will also have materials laid around the Pancake day to give prospective new members more information about Kiwanis. Williamson, club is doing very well they have sponsored a SLP and have actually gained 2 new member, the recently held a members honor dinner, they are also working on the Best of the Class recognition dinner. K and 3 year old classes once a week.. Preparations have begun for the 15 th. Annual Spaghetti Dinner in April. Preparing for the annual Kiwanis Day Care Center play ground clean up. East Huntington Provided transportation for Veterans to and from hospital and doctors. Preparing for the annual Pancake Breakfast Festival in Huntington at the Veterans Field House. West Charleston Preparing to cook and serve lunch and dinner at the Harvest Time Ministry in Charleston. Held a raffle for the Library Foundation s A-Tisket A-Tasket...a Literary Basket. Putnam County Continue planning and coordination of the requirements for the service project The Taste of Putnam for May 2011. Betty Ireland, Republican candidate for WV Governor, spoke at their Feb. 17 th. Meeting. Key Club Report: At the end of the 2009-2010 administrative year, the West Virginia Key Club District had 55 clubs,11 of which were listed as inactive and 4 listed as suspended. Total member count was 1,367. As of March 2, 2011, we have 56 clubs, 43 of which are listed as active, and 13 as inactive, with a total of 1,266 members. Several clubs have not yet paid dues Bridgeport, Grafton, Liberty (Harrison), North Marion, Oak Glen, South Harrison, and Wheeling Park. I have talked with, or heard from, all of these schools, and I believe that the dues will be paid shortly. The 13 inactive clubs are Bishop Donahue, East Fairmont, Keyser, Oak Hill, Philip Barbour, Poca, Robert C. Byrd, Spring Valley, St. Albans, Summers County, Trinity, Tucker County, and Winfield. I expect that East Fairmont, Keyser, Robert C. Byrd and Summers County will be reactivated. Lincoln and Tug Valley were reactivated earlier this year. The remaining clubs have been inactive for several years. We chartered new clubs this year at University High in Morgantown (Suncrest Area) and Burch High School (Red Jacket). We are hoping to charter clubs at Preston High School (Preston) and Bluefield High School (Bluefield). We are hoping to increase our membership beyond the 1400 member mark by the end of the year. We are going to award two matching $1,000.00 district scholarships (to any college or university), and two Thomas Bennett scholarships (West Virginia University. I will be asking The West Virginia District Kiwanis Foundation for a donation to help with the funding of the matching amounts from the Kiwanis International Foundation.

Governor Philip Mickinac s project relates to the support of disabled individuals. This year s District Project involved working with local food pantries. We had a successful Fall Rally in November 20-21, 2010 with 166 attendees; District Convention is March 25-27, 2011. The W.Va. District Key Club web site is up and running. Check us out at http://www.wvkeyclub.com. Bridgeport Kiwanian and past two-year board member Eric Yurko created the web site and will be responsible for its maintenance. The articles were drafted by Key Club board members. Kiwanis Key Club Committee member Don Saunders resigned from the committee. Daniel Savage has taken his place on the committee. If anyone has any information about the names of individuals and/or entities who have received the Charles E. McCallister award, and the year he or she or it received the award, please let me know. We want to acknowledge the recipients in our convention program.
