SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SENIORS APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS *****SENIORS, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: BE SURE TO READ THIS PAGE AND ALL DIRECTIONS!!! 1. Some scholarships require an application be filled out; some require a resume and/or budget sheet. Be certain you carefully read and submit only what is asked for. 2. If the deadline date is different on the application than on the list of scholarships, the date on the list is to be followed, NOT the date on the application. 3. Procedures for handling scholarship material: Applications will be available in the Guidance Office. You will find them in the file cabinet labeled Scholarships. Students should help themselves to the applications they want. When the application or resume is complete, students should hand them directly to a counselor or Mrs. Hays by 3:00 p.m. on or before the deadline. The guidance office is NOT responsible for applications turned in late, applications not directly handed to an adult in the guidance office, or applications lacking requested information. **DO NOT mail directly to scholarship committee! All applications must be turned in to the guidance office regardless of what the application states.** 4. If you have any questions, please ask an adult in the guidance office. 5. APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN THE GUIDANCE OFFICE AFTER 3:00 P.M. ON THE DUE DATE LISTED IN THE HANDOUT. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!! 2013 SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION FOR SENIORS Seniors who are planning to attend college, business, or vocational school after graduation should read the following information carefully and perhaps keep this information for future reference. In addition to state scholarships, there are several scholarships offered by individuals, organizations, churches, and industries in our community. Please contact the minister of your church for information

concerning any scholarships available to church members. Parents should contact the various unions and employers for scholarships available to sons and daughters of employees. The factors most considered in granting scholarship aid include: class rank, SAT scores, financial need, recommendations, special abilities and potentialities, and citizenship. To determine financial need, Indiana colleges require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be filed by March 1 st. This financial form is based on the previous year s income tax return and is used to determine the amount of financial help needed. Scholarships can be applied for by completing an application and/or writing a resume as specified by the organization offering the scholarship. Please use black ink or type without error when completing the application form. Answer all questions fully and in a direct manner. If a resume is required, it should be neatly hand written or typed and the following items should be included: 1. Introduction of applicant a) Give name of parents and their occupation b) Give the names of other members of the family in school or college c) Give your name and where you have attended school or been employed 2. Information about yourself a) Diploma Type b) Rank in class c) SAT/ACT scores d) Extra-curricular activities and offices e) Special hobbies 3. Give information about the college you plan to attend a) Name, location, and year of planned attendance b) Please indicate your degree objective and your college major or plan of study Some scholarships require recommendations. If recommendations are required, please ask a teacher from your major area of study and someone from the community to write one. Also, please give your reference a copy of your resume and a list of the scholarships you are requesting the recommendation for so they have accurate information.

Anticipated budget sheets should be attached to the resume when requested. These are available in the guidance office. Carefully read the description of the scholarship, the purpose of the scholarship, the amount of the award, method of application, and due date. ALL SCHOLARSHIP MATERIALS SHOULD BE GIVEN TO MRS. HAYS, MRS. MADAR, OR MRS. TERNIEDEN BY 3:00 P.M. ON THE DUE DATE ON THE ATTACHED LIST, NOT THE DUE DATE ON THE APPLICATION. After you submit your application, the guidance office will take responsibility for attaching your transcript and getting your application to the appropriate scholarship committee. If the application requires a counselor s input, OTHER THAN LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION, please leave blank and a counselor will complete the information once the application has been submitted. *** Please remember, if all of the foregoing suggestions worked for you and you were selected as a recipient of an award, write a THANK YOU note to the organization as soon as possible. The organizations enjoy hearing from the recipients and truly deserve this courtesy. All completed scholarship applications and resumes should be turned in to the guidance office on or before the due date.
