Department of Transportation Railroad Program Fund Code: 7829 Purpose: The purpose of this program is to provide operational support for programs administered by the Rail Division. Programs include operation of the Carolinian and the Piedmont train service, the Freight Rail and Rail Crossing Safety Improvement Program, rail crossing safety and track capacity and velocity improvements, and environmental and planning associated with the development of high-performing passenger rail service throughout North Carolina, Virginia, and the Southeast. 2016-17 Session Significant Budget Actions- Money Items Increased funding for the Freight Rail & Rail Crossing Safety Improvement Fund by $13,750,000 R in FY2016-17. 2016-17 Session Significant Budget Actions- Special Provision S.L. 2016-94 Section 35.18 authorized DOT, Rail Division to dispose or revitalize the rail-banked corridor between Andrew and Murphy in accordance with local and State agency transportation or recreational determinations, as well as joint local governmental financial participation. S.L. 2016-94 Section 35.21 (a) modified G.S. 124-5.1 to authorize grant funding projects on short-line railroad corridors without active freight rail service and to clarify that State-funded improvements to rail lines and corridors may span bordering state boundaries in order to connect to the national system.
