Funds raised through the sale of the baked goods and the concession stand help to finance this annual learning opportunity for our 4-H club members. Club members also visited residents at a local nursing home and donated needed items such as lotion, body wash, tissues, socks, magazines and more. Many residents have very few visitors and always welcome and smile and kind word. Members continue to participate in the state Pennies for Friendship project by collecting money at each club meeting. Our club is not very large but we have a huge heart for giving back to our community. We presented proposals at the meeting in July. We are looking at Raleigh as a venue. There will be lots of opportunity for all counties to be involved in the planning and execution of the conference Joyce Kluttz, Cabarrus County and a past NCECA president has graciously agreed to serve as Conference Chair Craven'County' Southeast Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Robeson, Sampson, Wayne, Wilson Craven+ County+ continues+ to+ clip+ coupons+ and+ cut+ Yish+ from+ greeting+cards+for+school+age+eye+exams.+ +Vanceboro+ECA+Club+ has+ been+ promoting+ the+ "Vial+ of+ Life"+ which+ has+ been+ very+ successful+in+the+community.+ +The+club+also+collects+backpacks+ and+ donates+ them+ to+ a+ local+ middle+ school.+ + The+ ladies+ also+ helped+ with+ the+ NC+ Farm+ program+ "Healthy+ Living+ for+ a+ Life+ Time".+++ The+ county+ has+ offered+ two+ canning+ workshops.+ + June+ was+ blueberry+ jam+ where+ participants+ made+ two+ different+ types+ of+ blueberry+ jam.+ + In+ July+ we+ offered+ a+ bread+ and+ butter+ pickle+ workshop+in+which+each+participant+took+a+jar+of+pickles+home.+ During+ the+ end+ of+ class+ participants+ were+ able+ to+ taste+ test different types of pickles. August 2014 Volume 4 number 4 Across'the'State go.ncsu.edu/nceca' Duplin'County' The+StanfordBDuplin+County+ECA+celebrated+ District+Day+in+Johnston+County..+Among+the+ activities+ scheduled+,+ participant+ cut+ out+ shoe+ tops+ for+ the+ organization+ Sole+ Hope + which+ makes+ shoes+ for+ needy+ children+ abroad.+ Along+ with+ participation+ in+ the+ silent+ auction,+ the+ Duplin+ ECA+ club+ submitted+ entries+ in+ the+ Cultural+ Arts+ competition.+ Club+ President+ Theresa+ Bowles+ won+ second+ place+ in+ Ylower+ arrangement/wreaths+ and+ third+ place+ in+ sewing+ for+ an+ apron+ submission.+ Duplin+ member,+ Mae+ Bell+ Satchel+ received+ a+ third+ place+in+the+heritage+skills+category.+ms.+satchel+and+ms.+bowles+ are+pictured+left+to+right.+++ Currently+ club+ members+ are+ stitching+ the+ Yinishing+ touches+ to+ a+ quit+ that+ will+ be+ used+ for+ a+ fundraising+rafyle+item.+pictured+(l+ to+ r)+ quilting+ is+ club+ members+ Annie+ Lou+ Williams,+ Ruby+ Brinson,+ Olivia+ Williams+ and+ Theresa+Bowles.+ Recently+members+of+the+Duplin+ECA+ delivered+ about+ 100+ adult+ bibs+ to+ local+ nursing+ homes+ and+ Club+ President+ Theresa+ Bowles+ and+ Club+ Treasurer+Ruby+Brinson+are+pictured+ at+one+of+the+donation+sites.++ North Central Alamance, Alleghany, Ashe, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Vance, Wilkes, Yadkin Our+NC+District+members+have+been+busy+this+spring+and+summer.+ Ashe' County+ screened+ for+ bacteria+ 72+ drinking+ water+ samples+ from+ private+wells+and+springs+that+provide+107+families+with+their+drinking+ water+in+the+county.+also+held+a+chef+and+child+program+that+teaches+ youth+ age+ 11B13,+ skills+ in+ the+ kitchen,+ plus+ table+ setting+ and+ to+ improve+their+table+manners.+ 4

Ruth'Cherry' ECA$ lost$ one$ of$ our$ past$ state$ presidents$ in$ May.$ $ Ruth$ served$ as$president$in$1985.$ She$ joined$ a$ Home$ Demonstration$ club$ in$ Edgecombe$ County$as$an18DyearD old$ bride,$ and$ was$ mentored$ by$ Extension$ Agent$ Eugenia$ Van$ Landingham,$ who$ recognized$ Ruth's$ leadership$ abilities$ and$ encouraged$ Ruth's$involvement$in$public$service.$ At$our$Centennial$Celebration,$Ruth$ was$inducted$into$the$fcs$hall$of$ Fame.$ Across'the'State August 2014 Volume 4 number 4 Like'NC'ECA'on'' facebook In$ Stokes' County,' the$ Lawsonville$ Club$ holds$ weekly$ quilting$ sessions.$ They$ also$ sell$ a$ variety$ of$ nuts$ each$ year$ and$ raised$ $15,000.$ They$ kept$ half$ that$ amount$ to$ use$ for$ community$ assistance$,$gave$two$$500$scholarships,$and$assist$in$the$running$ of$the$lawsonville$community$center.$ Surry'County$ECA$has$been$very$busy.$They$hosted$a$program$on$ housing$ safety$ at$ the$ Cultural$ Arts$ Day$ at$ the$ Surry$ County$ Community$ College$ Viticulture$ Center.$ Several$ members$ helped$ with$ an$ article$ for$ Our$ State$ Magazine$ on$ Sonkers,$ a$ form$ of$ fruit$ pie.$ Vance'County$was$awarded$a$$500$grant$from$the$ECA$Foundation$ to$ strengthen,$ develop,$ coordinate,$ and$ extend$ adult$ education$ to$ improve$the$quality$of$living$in$cooperation$with$the$ncces.$ Davie' County$ prepared$ a$ meal$ for$ 40$ people$ for$ their$ Extension$ OfVice$ Report$ to$ the$ People,$ a$ program$ to$ tell$ the$ County$ Commissioners$ and$ County$ OfVicers$ about$ the$ programs$ and$ the$ people$reached$by$the$extension$ofvice.$their$eca$president$gave$a$ talk$about$the$history$of$eca.$ The$Durham'County$ECA$was$awarded$one$of$the$grants$from$the$ ECA$ Foundation$ to$ buy$ kitchen$ equipment$ for$ a$ future$ kitchen$ at$ the$ag.$building.$i$know$that$they$are$very$excited$about$someday$ having$this$kitchen$ Orange' County$ also$ received$ a$ grant$ to$ publish$ a$ history$ of$ Orange$ County$ ECA.$It$should$be$published$ by$late$2014.$$$$ Members$ of$ the$ Antioch$ Club$ after$ their$ tour$ of$ Blandwood,$ the$ home$ of$ former$nc$governor$john$motley$morehead$in$greensboro.$ Forsyth' County$ has$ hosted$ a$ number$ of$ programs,$ "Add$ a$ Little$ Spice$ (Herbs)$ to$ Your$ Life",$ a$ tile$ workshop$ at$ Home$ Depot,$ plus$ others.$they$also$hosted$a$number$of$tours$that$included$delta$arts$ Center$and$the$Diggs$Gallery,$ $an$amtrak$tour$from$greensboro$to$ Raleigh$to$visit$two$museums,$plus$others.$ Person'County$ECA$set$up$a$booth$at$the$Ag$Field$Day$to$provide$ instructions$ on$ quilting.$ They$ also$ volunteered$ with$ the$ SnapDEd$ Nutrition$ Program,$ helping$ 2nd$ and$ 3rd$ graders$ for$ a$ total$ of$ 18$ weeks.$ All$ of$ the$ counties$ that$ sent$ in$ their$ District$ Reports$ had$ many$ more$ events,$ fundraisers$ and$ donations,$ community$ service$ projects$and$volunteerism$that$they$reported$on.$i$am$so$proud$of$ everything$they$have$accomplished.$ Laura$Lloyd 5

August 2014 Volume 4 number 4 Across'the'State South Central Alexander, Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cumberland, Gaston, Harnett, Poke, Iredell, Lee, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Richmond, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly, Union Harnett'County' The$ four$ Harnett$ County$ ECA$ clubs$ are$ true$ to$ the$ mission$ to$ strengthen$families$through$leadership$development,$volunteer$work,$ educational$ support$ and$ researcheddbased$ education$ from$ North$ Carolina$ State$ University$ and$ North$ Carolina$ State$ A&T$ State$ University.$$$ The$ Progressive$ ECA$ club$ supports$ the$ Harnett$ Food$ Pantry$ with$ many$volunteer$hours$helping$to$eliminate$food$insecurity$to$families$ in$the$county;$they$provide$goodie$baskets$villed$with$essential$items$ for$ nursing$ home$ residents;$ and$ provide$ important$ educational$ programs$ such$ as$ health$ and$ Vitness,$ freezing$ fresh$ fruits$ and$ vegetable;$ as$ well$ as$ provide$ resource$ information$ to$ assist$ families$ healthcare,$social$and$recreational$needs.$$ The$ Ambassador$ Club$ sponsors$ the$ Buddy$ Backpack$ program$ through$ fundraisers$ and$ through$ public$ and$ private$ donations$ of$ funds$and$food$items;$they$provide$for$schools$in$the$northern$district$ of$ the$ county$ to$ hundreds$ of$ students$ to$ supply$ their$ hunger$ needs$ during$the$weekend$when$they$are$not$in$school.$members$of$this$club$ also$host$bidmonthly$social$crafter$group$meetings,$sewing$camps$and$ special$ interest$ workshops.$ Five$ members$ toured$ Plants$ Delight$ Nursery$ open$ house$ where$ native$ NC$ plants$ and$ cultured$ plants$ are$ on$display$and$can$be$purchased.$ The$Liberty$club$provides$garden$tours$teaching$to$identify$a$variety$ of$ plants$ (edible$ and$ nondeditable);$ they$ sponsor$ and$ provide$ weekend$ Cotton$ Museum$ tours$ for$ one$ of$ the$ local$ towns$ in$ the$ county$sharing$a$wealth$of$historical$knowledge$to$many$people.$the$ Rainbow$ ECA$ supports$ and$ provides$ citizenship$ and$ civic$ education$ to$many$in$the$western$part$of$harnett$county;$they$are$very$active$in$ politics$ bringing$ awareness$ to$ injustices,$ campaigning,$ working$ political$polls$and$sharing$updated$political$information$to$citizens.$$ All$ Harnett$ County$ ECA$ members$ can$ be$ found$ this$ 2014$ summer$ providing$ 4DH$ workshops$ dedicated$ to$ 19 th $ century$ crafts$ such$ as$ quilting,$sewing,$breaddmaking$and$making$fruit$preserves.$$$members$ also$provided$refreshments$at$a$reception$held$for$an$fcs$agent$who$ was$ retiring.$ $ Harnett$ ECA$ members$ serve$ Harnett$ County$ communities$ 365$ days$ a$ year$ because$ they$ believe$ in$ the$ NCECA$ mission$wholedheartedly.$ 6

August 2014 Volume 4 number 4 NVON'Conference' Across'the'State In$ July,$ eight$ $ people$ from$ NC$ traveled$to$indianapolis,$indiana$ to$attend$the$nvon$conference.$$$ Our$ own$ Geri$ Bushel$ presented$ two$workshops.$$$ Wanda$ Denning$ was$ elected$ Vice$ President$ and$ will$ serve$ three$ year$ term.$ $ In$ that$ position,$she$will$be$responsible$ for$the$next$project$in$common. Lincoln'County' There's$a$new$sign$in$front$of$the$James$W.$Warren$Citizens$Center$in$ LincolntonDDand$a$bit$of$history$goes$along$with$the$sign.$$The$name$of$ the$ former$ Lincoln$ County$ Commissioner$ was$ added$ to$ the$ name$ of$ the$building$years$after$it$was$approved$and$built$over$30$years$ago.$ Warren$was$chairman$of$the$Commissioners$for$many$years.$ Other$ towns$ and$ cities$ had$ buildings$ called$ Civic$ Center,$ or$ Convention$ Center$ or$ Community$ Building.$ $ The$ unusual$ namedd Citizens$ CenterDDmight$ easily$ have$ been$ the$ SENIOR$ Citizens$ Center,$ since$many$of$those$who$worked$to$get$it$built$were$seniors.$among$ the$ active$ organizations$ that$ worked$ for$ that$ purpose$ was$ ECA.$ ECA$ operates$under$the$umbrella$of$the$cooperative$extension$service$and$ it$ was$ partially$ a$ desire$ to$ see$ that$ department$ get$ more$ adequate$ facilities$ that$ led$ to$ their$ support$ of$ the$ Citizens$ Center$ years$ ago.$ They$ wanted$ better$ facilities$ for$ the$ Extension$ Service$ programs,$ which$ at$ that$ time$ were$ housed$ in$ the$ basement$ of$ the$ Courthouse.$ They$ also$ wanted$ an$ auditorium$ that$ could$ be$ used$ for$ community$ events.$ George$Stoudemire,$then$Extension$Service$County$Director,$helped$to$ organize$ many$ groups.$ Among$ them$ were$ the$ Piedmont$ Area$ Development$Associations$(PADA),$garden$clubs$and$others.$$ 2014$ is$ the$ Centennial$ Year$ of$ the$ North$ Carolina$ Extension$ Service.$ The$ local$ ECA$ applied$ for$ and$ received$ a$ grant$ from$ the$ ECA$ Foundation$ to$ pay$ for$ a$ sign$ that$ has$ been$ placed$ in$ front$ of$ the$ Citizens$Center$showing$that$the$NC$Cooperative$Extension$Service$is$ located$there$ In$ addition$ to$ ECA s$ assistance$ and$ support$ of$ Extension s$ programs,$ they$continue$to$provide$support$for$various$groups$in$lincoln$county.$ Some$of$those$include:$the$Coalition$for$the$Prevention$of$Child$Abuse,$ the$ NC$ Symphony s$ concert$ for$ schools,$ the$ American$ Red$ Cross,$ Amy s$ House,$ Warm$ Up$ America,$ the$ Boys$ &$ Girls$ Club,$ and$ Community$Gardens$are$just$a$few$that$receive$support.$ Top,$LDR:$$ Mickey$ Sigmon,$ Leona$ Dellinger,$ $ Dot$ Harris,$ Glenda$ Craig,$ Joyce$Peeler,$Tone$Duncan$ Bottom,$LDR:$Helen$Bennett,$Lucille$Johnson,$Joyce$Gerlits,$ Melinda$Houser,$Liaison$with$the$Extension$Service 7
