At no time in human history has the world been more urbanized than today. Cities are places of innovation, prosperity, diversity, and possibility. With their success has come growing disparity of class and economic well- being. In California, the entire state faces a housing crisis, and the number of people who are one paycheck or health crisis away from being homeless is a national phenomenon. The problem is so complex that just talking about homelessness can seem overwhelming. But cities across the country are making strides. Join us for an in- depth conversation with the people making tough choices and leading the way toward better outcomes. Magic of Mentorship: Getting value on Both Sides of the Relationship Convention Center, Room 411 Mentoring is a huge part of success in the real estate industry. And it s is a two- way street. In the perfect scenario, both the mentor and the mentee learn from each other and grow professionally and personally. But how does that happen? Sometimes it s organic but most times it takes engagement, awareness, and listening. Learn from those who have been on both sides of the relationship as they share their mentor and mentee experiences so you can be better at both. Construction Contracts and Pricing for the Developer: A Primer Construction is one of the most complex facets of real estate development. Understanding the relative risks and merits of different contract types and delivery methods is critical to delivering a financially viable project. This highly informative session will provide an insightful overview into how risk and responsibility are allocated under different scenarios. NETWORKING LUNCH 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Food available for purchase on the first floor of the Convention Center. Grab a bite and join your friends or meet new colleagues.
CONCURRENT SESSIONS 1:45 p.m. 2:45 p.m. No Partners, No Problems? Should your business mantra be Go big or go home, or Too big not to fail? In a lively, freewheeling exchange intended to educate emerging entrepreneurs and perhaps amuse mature ones, John McNellis, author of the ULI book Making It in Real Estate, will explore the benefits and costs of using other people s money to fund your development deals versus the freedom and limitations of using your own money. Is it better to own 1 percent of a high- rise or 100 percent of a gas station? To go national or stay local? Spoiler alert: you can go broke either way. Small- Scale Developer Skill Session: Strategic Planning Smaller- scale developers can benefit from their ability to more quickly identify and execute deals. But that agility can come at the expense of more thoughtful planning. This session will introduce participants to some basic tools and frameworks of strategic planning that will help them develop a more effective, efficient, and stable organization. 2:45 p.m. 3:15 p.m. Join us in West Lobby Petree Hall for networking and informal ULI s View from the Top The ULI Women s Leadership Initiative presents an intimate conversation with Amy Elaine Wakeland, the First Lady of Los Angeles. The conversation will touch on her advocacy and leadership. WLI Global Chair Serena Wolfe will moderate the session. 4:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Join us in West Lobby Petree Hall for networking and informal GENERAL SESSION Frank Gehry 5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS 3:15 p.m. 4:30 p.m. YLG Forum: A Dialogue on Leadership Convention Center, Room 502 Join the Young Leaders Group for a conversation with Alexa Arena, Lendlease, followed by a peer- led discussion of leadership, overcoming obstacles, and finding value in challenges. Drawing from the forthcoming ULI book Building Equitable Cities and the evolving experience of communities across the United States, the panel will impart practical, action- oriented advice on one of the key issues that will shape cities and regions in the years ahead.
