About the service Edge Autism Limited provides care and support to adults and children over the age of 10 years with autism in their own homes and/or in the community. Service users come from Edinburgh and the Lothians. Ten service users and their families were using the service at inspection. The office base is in Musselburgh. The service aims "to provide an exemplary service to clients with a diagnosis of autism. We will continually strive to achieve quality and excellence in all aspects of our service delivery". The service was registered with the Care Inspectorate on 22 December 2016. What people told us We spoke with five parent/carers and received two completed care standards questionnaires. Views of the service were very positive with management and staffing cited as major strengths. Comments included: "Edge Autism are the most focused, pro-active and supportive organisation we have ever encountered - outstanding care and support for our entire family". "Absolutely fantastic service - staff work with the entire family - my son would be dead without Edge". We received one e-mail response from a social worker. Views of the service were very positive. Comments included: "Input from Edge has been extremely positive - (service user) is mentally stronger than she has been for many years, which family believe is down to the positive support from Edge Autism - she now goes out and into environments that her family never thought she would cope with". Self assessment The service had not been asked to complete a self assessment in advance of the inspection. We looked at their own improvement plan and quality assurance paperwork. These demonstrated their priorities for development and how they were monitoring the quality of the provision within the service. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good not assessed page 2 of 5
What the service does well We found that Edge Autism Limited provided a very good service to service users and their families. Parents/ carers held the service in very high regard. We saw that very good assessment and support planning were in place that fully involved service users and their parents/carers. Likewise, risk assessments were detailed and up-to-date. Support plans were person-centred and included areas to be progressed. There was a focus on maximising independence. The SHANARRI (safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included) wellbeing indicators were used for young people under 18 years. We saw that each service user was allocated a 'care package' team consisting of workers whose skills and attributes matched the needs of the service user. Relationships between workers, families and service users were very positive. We found that due regard was given to health issues and that service users were encouraged to take part in activities including surfing, skateboarding, trampolining and kick boxing. We found the service to be well-managed and staffed. Parents/carers held the staff and managers in high regard. We saw a thorough and systematic recruitment process that included relevant checks and references. Staff described a very thorough three-month induction process that included 'shadowing' experienced workers. Staff were registered, or in the process of registering, with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and were aware of the SSSC Code of Practice. Some staff were registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Staff had access to a very good mandatory training programme that encompassed various aspects relating to autism. This included conflict resolution, epilepsy, suicide prevention and awareness training, first aid and breakaway techniques. All staff had undertaken child protection and protection of vulnerable groups training. These areas were revisited annually. Staff had access to the manager on a daily basis and met periodically as a 'care package' team. A 24 Hour oncall system was in place to support and guide staff practice. Staff were subject to a quarterly appraisal. A staff meeting took place quarterly. Staff told us that they felt very well-informed, guided and supported by the manager. We formed a view of a supported and supportive team. What the service could do better Staff should familiarise themselves with the new Health and Social Care standards. page 3 of 5
