About the Cake On Thursdays, Columba Hall opens its doors to all Holy Cross religious in the area and other invited guests for Mass, social, and dinner. The Columba refectory, with lake view on either side, seats fifty-four and often fills on Thursdays; but Rick Landsberg, hall manager, and Carrie Ullery, Thursday cook supreme, always find a solution if overflow occurs. Last Thursday, residents and guests moved into the dining room and saw a large cake with blue and white icing on display in honor of the Kansas City Royals, World Series Champion. Donor of the cake, John Moreland, UND 58 and UND Law 6l, returned near the end of dinner time to join Brother John Doran and the community for coffee. The two, aka Jack and Jake, first met at the Notre Dame Grotto for the 6:45 p.m. Rosary a few years ago, and, along with Brother Richard Huber, have continued to support that devotion. They soon discovered that they shared a baseball addiction: for Jack, a Kansas Citian, the Royals, and for Jake, an Iowan, the St. Louis Cardinals. By virtue of Counselor Moreland s generosity, they have traveled several times to Chicago to see the Royals play the White Sox and once to a rooftop location at Wrigley Field to see the Cardinals and Cubs. Perhaps related to daily recital of the rosary at the Grotto, Jack and Jake have concluded that heaven must have some version of baseball. Cardinals and Royals both dominated in the regular season, but - 6 -
neither team relies upon home runs. When asked by Brother Richard Johnson, publisher-photographer of Midwest-Midweek, if the NL Cardinals might reach the Fall Classic next year, Jake said, Yes, with the grace of God and a fast infield. When asked the same question about the AL Royals, Jack, 94, said, Yes, but probably without His terrestrial help because with baseball in heaven and at a higher level, they ( Angels for Mundane Affairs ) may need me to pitch tomorrow night. Friendship Centers Carter epitomizes servant as leader concept By KATHY SILVERBERG Published: Friday, October 16, 2015 at 1:00 a.m. Last Modified: Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 3:34 p.m. At the end of a leadership program I attended years ago, each participant was given a copy of Robert K. Greenleaf s book The Servant as Leader. The group spent a bit of time discussing the concept but not extensively. I remember thinking, "Does this mean bringing donuts to the staff, sending cards on their birthdays, occasionally helping out on the front line when circumstances warrant?" Maybe some of that, I came to realize, but it was much more. Throughout the rest of my working life, I found strength in the lessons Green Leaf espoused, even if I didn t always walk that path. - 8 -
But I know someone who has. Bob Carter, the president and CEO of the Friendship Centers will be leaving his post at the end of this year, but his service will not soon be forgotten, and the positive difference he has made in the community and beyond is sure to be his legacy. Carter has been with the Friendship Centers, the regional organization that serves older adults in five counties, for a quarter of a century. He came when what was then called the Senior Friendship Centers was still a relatively new phenomenon, leading the way in a movement that would become ubiquitous in communities across the nation. It had been the vision of Brother William Geenen, a member of the Catholic Order of Holy Cross, who, on vacation in Sarasota in 1973, observed older adults who had come to Florida to enjoy the good life were experiencing a number of challenges, including loneliness. He vowed to do something about it and began work to establish a series of centers and programs aimed at meeting the needs of seniors. Over the next four decades, the Friendship Centers have grown to include dozens of programs from health clinics to caregiver resources to socialization opportunities. Carter was not there at the beginning, but when he came to Sarasota he soon attached himself to the Friendship Centers. He began as an auditor but caught the eye of the founder. Brother Geenen must have seen something in his new recruit because, before long, he became his go-to person. It is not easy to take over an organization from a passionate, hands-on founder, and Brother Geenen was definitely of that ilk. Almost nothing went on in his organization that he didn t touch personally. But somehow Carter managed to do more than carry on Geenen s vision- - expanding it, innovating within its structure, and gaining a national reputation for excellence in senior services. The Friendship Centers now include licensed adult day programs in Sarasota and Lee counties the one at the Sarasota center was the first licensed in the state health clinics in Sarasota, Venice, and Naples, serving low-income people 50 and older, noon meals served at 22 locations in Sarasota, Lee, DeSoto, and Charlotte counties, and an array of educational and recreational programs across the area. Its paid staff numbers some 125, but volunteers -- eight for every staff member -- provide the engine for this fast-moving train. - 9 -
Along the way, Carter has faced his set of challenges. Federal funds that once supported many of the Friendship Centers' programs have dwindled in recent years, at a time when Southwest Florida has seen a burgeoning older population with changing, sometimes growing, needs. His team has not faltered, and that didn t happen by accident. In his book, Greenleaf defines a servant-leader as one who puts the needs of staff members first and empowers them to perform at their highest level. In identifying this kind of leadership, Greenleaf asks, Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? Carter has built a leadership team that is caring and capable, encouraged to do the right thing in a variety of circumstances. A couple of years ago, Carter vacated his executive office and moved to a nearby building in smaller quarters so that members of his staff could work in closer proximity to one another. He was clearly not into the trappings of power. It is also a testament to his leadership that the senior vice president, Erin McLeod, has been named his successor. In a second book, The Institution as Servant, Greenleaf writes, Caring for persons, the more able persons, the more able and the less able serving each other, is the rock upon which a good society is built. That is the kind of organization Brother Geenen envisioned and the one Carter has ably led, positioning it to help build a better society. I know. I serve as chair of the Friendship Centers Board of Governors. Kathy Silverberg is a former publisher of the Herald-Tribune s southern editions. National Philanthropy Day Saint Edward High School November 11, 2015 We received the following from K.C. McKenna, VP of Admissions and Marketing at St. Edward High School, Lakewood, Ohio, last Friday, November 6 th. As far as we know, St. Edward is the only high school in the Diocese of Cleveland to sponsor a St. Vincent DePaul Society as a school service organization. Students became involved and started this service club following a talk two years ago by John Litten, SEHS 97. John, a recent recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, is the Executive Director of the society. As an extension of this celebration, current St. Edward senior Greg Margevicius, 16, spoke Friday before the Cleveland Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at a large gathering on Cleveland s west side. Today, as part of Cleveland's National Philanthropy Day, select St. Ed's students will receive the Youth Group in Philanthropy Award for establishing the St. Vincent de Paul Conference, the only high school chapter in NE Ohio. Each day, our Edsmen have the ability to develop into their true selves, grounded in and guided by their faith, surrounded by excellence, enriched through lifelong relationships and prepared to take their place as servant leaders in a world desperate for their leadership and service. These opportunities come in different shapes and sizes - in the classroom, on the playing field, in the arts and in the co-curriculars that take them into our community and into our world. St. Ed's gratefully acknowledges the support of our alumni, parents, faculty and staff, alumni parents, friends, corporations and foundations, whose faithful generosity makes possible every opportunity, every day. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR ST. ED'S! St. Edward High School congratulates all of the 2015 National Philanthropy Day Recipients and especially Paul Clark '71 who is the 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Award, nominated by the United Way of Greater Cleveland. - 11 -
