The next stop is the James Center: This three building complex was built in 1985 on the site of the original canal turning basin, and it too includes almost 1 million square feet of net leasable area. Lunch will be served at the Tobacco Company: The former tobacco warehouse was opened as a restaurant in 1977. Following lunch the motor coach will depart for Gateway Plaza Richmond s newest office building which boasts over 500,000 square feet and a five-story parking deck. The day concludes with a tour of The Jefferson Hotel, opened in 1895, and elected in 1969 to the National Register of Historical Places. 12

Following lunch, the program will continue with a tour of the Residences at the John Marshall: The John Marshall opened in 1929 as Virginia s largest hotel and has recently undergone a $70 million renovation as 238 apartment homes. The building was designed by New York architect John Eberson for the Loew s Corporation and was considered the most modern theater in the South when it opened in 1928. Therese Evans, of Dominion Arts Center will speak about the use of the tax credits, having been responsible for this aspect of the project and Colin Robinson of Gilbane Construction will address the extent of the renovation. Following the lecture presentations Dolly Vogt of Dominion Arts Center/SMG will lead us across North Sixth Street for a behind the scenes tour of the Carpenter Theater. 15

The evening begins at Woodside in western Henrico County. The tour continues at Redesdale, situated along scenic River Road, also in Henrico County. This modest Greek Revival style villa built in 1858 sits in a sympathetic historic setting thanks to a conservation easement which allowed for limited subdivision of the original parcel. Redesdale is a stunning Colonial Revival mansion built in 1925 and designed by society architect William Lawrence Bottemly. The property is covered by a use-value assessment Open Space Agreement, including gardens designed by noted landscape architect Charles Freeman Gillette. This eighteenth century home of the Randolph family is covered by a historic preservation easement and may be familiar to watchers of the television series Turn. 19

The tour continues at the Henrico Theater in the Highland Springs area of eastern Henrico County. This Henrico County facility was constructed in 1938 as an Art Deco movie palace. The evening concludes at another Henrico County landmark, the Mankin Mansion. The 1924 mansion was built as the home of Edward Thurston Mankin, the owner of the of the South s renowned brick foundries. 20

The Virginia Capitol, the birthplace of assessment law, was designed by Thomas Jefferson and has served as the seat of government since 1788. In preparation for the 400 th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown, Capitol Square became the home of a new Capitol Square Visitors Center and the Capitol was renovated to meet the needs of the twenty-first century. Kathleen Kilpatrick of the Capitol Square Preservation Council will speak about the careful planning and historic preservation consideration given to Capitol Square. Richard Sliwoski, of Virginia Commonwealth University, will provide insight to the recent renovation and improvements. The program will conclude with a four-block walk, led by Mark Greenough of the Capitol Square Visitors Center, to Capitol Square for a tour of the Virginia State Capitol. 22
