Illinois has won the team title four times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2012) and have crowned 12 individual champions. Isaiah Martinez won the 157-pound title at 2014 Midlands and the 165-pound bracket at 2016 Midlands. *Isaiah Martinez is seeking to become the first Illini to win three Midlands titles. Only 42 wrestlers, inlcuding just 28 collegiate grapplers, have ever won three. Illini coach Jim Heffernan won three (1983-84, 86) at Iowa. *Five Illini enter the weekend ranked according to InterMat's latest polls: #2 Isaiah Martinez (165), #12 Emery Parker (184), #13 Kyle Langenderfer (157), #15 Travis Piotrowski (125) and #20 Dylan Duncan (133). *Isaiah Martinez currently ranks 24th on Illinois' all-time wins list with 101 career wins. Recording his 100th win at Fresno State on November 17, Martinez is two wins behind Griff Powell (103) and four wins behind a trio of Illini -- Kevin Puebla (105), current Illini assistant coach Mike Poeta (105) and John Dergo (105) -- for 20th place. *Two Illini enter Midlands with an unblemished record. Sophomore Travis Piotrowski sports a 7-0 record at 125 pounds, while redshirt senior Isaiah Martinez is 3-0 at 165 pounds. *Isaiah Martinez has won each of his three matches this season by tech fall, outscoring his three opponents 75-29. Of his 101 career victories, 42 have come by tech fall. *Illinois features three first-year starters in their lineup this season: #20 Dylan Duncan (133), Mike Carr (141) and Xavier Montalvo (174). three Big Ten teams in the top-10, eight other conference foes join the Illini this weekend with only No. 2 Ohio State and Michigan State not participating. ILLINOIS MIDLANDS HISTORY Since the inaugural Midlands in 1963, the Fighting Illini have participated in 41 of the 54 Midlands tournaments. Entering their 42nd appearance this week, the Illini have won the title four times, most recently in 2012. Individually, Illini wrestlers have placed 130 times at the annual holiday tournament, while 12 Illini have been crowned champions. Isaiah Martinez has twice won the event, being crowned the 157-pound champion as a redshirt freshman in 2014 and the 165- pound champion in 2016. I-MAR SEEKS ILLUSTRIOUS THIRD MIDLANDS TITLE In the 54-year history of the Midlands tournament, only 43 wrestlers have won three or more individual titles. Of the 43 grapplers, only 18 have won three while in college with the most recent coming last year when Iowa's Thomas Gilman accomplished the feat. The remaining 24 three-time winners reached their third title while wrestling for a club team following graduation. Martinez would be the first Illini to join this group. Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan is a three-time Midlands champion, winning in 1983, 1984 and 1986. ILLINI TO WATCH 125: #15 Travis Piotrowski One of two Illini to enter the midseason tournament without a blemish on his record. With seven straight victories to open the season, the Illini sophomore is one of seven ranked wrestlers in the Midlands field. Ranked #15 entering the weekend, Piotrowski went 2-2 last year at Midlands, highlighted by an upset of No. 18 L.J. Bentley in the second round. Of the other six ranked wrestlers, three come from Big Ten schools on Illinois' remaining schedule in No. 2 Nick Suriano (Rutgers), No. 12 Sebastian Rivera (NW) and No. 18 Luke Welch (PUR). 165: #2 Isaiah Martinez Seeking to become just the 19th collegian to win a third Midlands title, Martinez Season Notes headlines six ranked wrestlers in the bracket. Along with Martinez, Evan Wick (Wisconsin) ranks in the top-10 at 165 and will be a preview of a Feb. 11 dual at Huff Hall. Along with Wick, a couple foes from Martinez's path to last year's Midlands title will again look to challenge him this year: No. 12 Anthony Valencia (ASU) and No. 13 Alex Marinelli (Iowa). Martinez defeated both by major decisions last year, Valencia in the semifinals and Marinelli in the quarterfinals. 184: #12 Emery Parker Despite just one loss this season, Parker will be looking to beef up his resume with wins over ranked opponents after dropping the Roadrunner Open title match to No. 8 Ricky Robertson (Wisconsin) back in November. Parker's first of a handful of ranked wins last season came at Midlands when he pinned Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan. Along with Robertson and Ellingwood, Nick Gravina (Rutgers) is also in the field after Parker defeated Gravina in New Brunswick last January, 8-6, in sudden victory. I-MAR FIFTH AT U-23 WORLDS Isaiah Martinez made his first appearance at world competition on Sunday, November 26, as he placed fifth at U-23 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. After dropping his first match to eventual 74kg champion Gadzhi Nabiev (Russia), Martinez battled back in repechage to finish 2-2 on the day. MARTINEZ CLIMBS ALL-TIME LISTS Isaiah Martinez sits atop the Illinois alltime win percentage list with a.980 win percentage (101-2), a full nine points higher than Matt Lackey's.896 that stood as the best in program history for 14 seasons. Martinez is also within reach of Alex Tirapelle's all-time wins record (128) set from 2003-06. Martinez (101) needs 28 wins to pass the former Illini. Wrestler Years Win % 1. EIGHT ILLINI RANKED IN PRESEASON POLLS Illinois enters the new season with the look of a well-balanced lineup, as eight of the ten starters are ranked in the top-20 of their weight classes. Two Illini are ranked in the top-10 as No. 2 Isaiah Martinez (165) and No. 6 Emery Parker (184) lead the team, while No. 15 Travis Piotrowski (125), No. 16 Kyle Langenderfer (157), No. 18 Eric Barone (149) and No. 20 Brooks Black (HWT) are ranked returnees. Making their lineup debut this season, No. 17 Dylan Duncan (133) and No. 19 Xavier Montalvo (174) are mentioned by FloWrestling to start the year. BROCK ERVIN NAMED STUDENT VOLUNTEER Illinois wrestling coach Jim Heffernan has added redshirt senior Brock Ervin as a student volunteer coach. The addition comes on the heels of backto-back season-ending injuries for the Morganfield, Illinois native. After tallying 21 wins while redshirting in 2014-15, Ervin started for the Illini during each of the next two seasons. In 2015-16, Ervin finished with an 8-5 record, highlighted by a 14-12 upset of No. 12 Steve Bleise at Northern Illinois. After an injury cut the end of his season short, Ervin bounced back in 2016-17 with a 13-3 record to start the season only to see his season again ended due to injury. Overall, Ervin finished his Illini career with a 21-8 record with five of the victories coming by fall. Off the mat, Ervin excelled in the classroom. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Ervin was also named an Academic All- American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association in 2015-16. FOUR ILLINI SENIORS SET FOR FINAL GO AROUND Isaiah Martinez, Kyle Langenderfer, Brooks Black and Isaac Reinemann begin their final season in the Illinois wrestling program. The quartet enters their final seasons with 208 career Season Notes wins between them, highlighted seven NCAA Championship appearances and Big Ten place-finishes. ILLINI ADD POETA TO COACHING STAFF Illinois wrestling head coach Jim Heffernan announced the addition of former Illini Mike Poeta to his coaching staff on June 13. A threetime All-American and two-time Big Ten champion, Poeta will join current assistant coach Jeremy Hunter on the Fighting Illini wrestling staff. Poeta returns to the University of Illinois following five years as the owner and head coach of the Poeta Training Center in Lake Forest, Illinois. During its inaugural year, Team Poeta grew from 40 wrestlers to 200 wrestlers. Since then, the training center has produced 19 high school and junior high state champions. A 157-pounder from 2004-2008 for the Illini, Poeta became one of the most successful wrestlers in Fighting Illini history and was a member of Illinois' 2005 Big Ten championship team. Individually, Poeta was a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA finalist and two-time Big Ten champion. Poeta left Illinois ranked second all-time in career win percentage, and currently ranks third. Poeta graduated from the College of Applied Health Sciences with a bachelor's degree in community health in 2009. MEDLIN NAMED DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS Illinois wrestling Head Coach Jim Heffernan announced the hiring of Bryan Medlin as the program's Director of Operations on August 3. In addition to being the Director of Operations for the team, Medlin will also serve as the Head Coach of the Illinois Regional Training Center. Medlin comes to Illinois following a 10-year stint at Washington Community High School in Illinois. Inheriting a program that had never won a regional title as of 2007, Medlin coached Washington to seven regional titles in 10 years and has won each of the last two Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 2A dual state championships. Individually, 40 individuals have medaled at IHSA State Championships in the last eight seasons under Medlin ALLIE MORRISON ENTERS ILLINI HOF Former Illini Allie Morrison was elected as one of the inaugural members of the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame. During Heffernan s time in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois has finished in the top-10 at the NCAA championships on 13 occasions, and in the top-15 in 17 of the last 19 seasons. Heffernan has been a major factor in the renaissance of the Illinois wrestling program, helping lead the team to its greatest prosperity since the post- World War II era, including a Big Ten title in 2005 and four Midlands team crowns. Heffernan has also mentored nine individual national champions in the last 18 seasons. In 2015, 157-pounder Isaiah Martinez (157) joined Jesse Delgado (125), Matt Lackey(165), Adam Tirapelle (149, 2001), John Lockhart (heavyweight, 2001), Carl Perry (141, 2000), Eric Siebert (150, 1998), Ernest Benion, Jr. (158, 1995) and Steve Marianetti (150, 1995) in earning NCAA titles since 1995. Heffernan has also guided the Illini to record-setting performances. In 2015, Heffernan guided Isaiah Martinez to the first undefeated season (35-0) by a freshman since Cael Sanderson did so in 1999 at Iowa State. In 2014, Tony Dallago became the Illinois alltime leader in career pins (40), while Alex Tirapelle set the school record for career wins (128). As a team, the Illini set the school record for dual victories in a season (16) in 2011. In 2005, Heffernan assisted Illinois in bringing home its first Big Ten Conference tournament championship in 53 years, as Alex Tirapelle (157) and Friedl (174) took home individual league crowns out of five total finalists for the Illini. For the second season in a row, the Illini won the Big Ten regular-season dual meet title with a near-perfect 7-0-1 record. The team finished sixth at the national tournament after qualifying nine wrestlers, while 125-pounder Ott made a repeat appearance in the finals. The team matched 2004 s achievement of five All-Americans in Ott (2nd, 125), Mark Jayne (7th, 133), Cassio Pero (7th, 141), Friedl (4th, 174) and Brian Glynn (3rd, 184). Heffernan captained the Hawkeyes as a senior and grabbed Iowa s Male Athlete of the Year honor in 1987. Heffernan began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa before becoming an assistant coach at Lehigh University in 1988. He remained at Lehigh until moving to Oregon State in 1990. He joined Johnson in Champaign in 1992. Before taking over as head coach in 2009, Heffernan earned national coach of the year honors three times (1995, 2001, 2003). He also coached the Cadet Wrestling Team at the world championships in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1992, and the USA World Espoir Team in 1989. 2017-18 University of Illinois Wrestling Notes // 12
