APON Update from Brother Ronald Drahozal Below are pictures of recent APON events Brother Ronald Drahozal sent us from Bangladesh. Brother Ronald also wrote the following along with sending pictures. There are a number of events that APON got Bangladesh and Asian coverage with. These pictures have taken place during recent weeks and months. God has blessed us a 1000 times over. This is not a work but a service of love to those most in need of love. I often remember those who are using drugs and especially the children on the streets who hunger for love but have nobody to love them and pray that they may experience God's love somehow/ someway. I had actually wanted to send the Bali Indonesia pictures in a separate article but have been busy, distracted and so it got rather delayed. Going to Bali was a new experience as Indonesia is a very Moslem country but Bali has a lot of old Hindu structures, history, etc. That is the closest I will most likely ever get to Australia. I had passed up going to the States in 2010 in order to attend drug related conferences in Jakarta, Indonesia, Genoa, Italy and Manila, Philippines. It was the first time I had been to those countries. Actually my service with drug addicts - 6 -

have taken me to most Asian countries and I have given presentations or conducted some of the programs at various places. I keep thinking that little rascal from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has done some wonderful things with God's help. Digonto TV, a private channel made an excellent documentary about me and especially APONGAON and our special rehab, primary education, skill training program for street children drug addicts---the only such program in Bangladesh. It was considered a very well done documentary. Prothom Alo, the leading Bangla newspaper in the country had a article about Br. - 7 -

Ronald is in his 50 th year of service to the people of Bangladesh and before, as a teacher, now with drug addicts, especially street children. With the picture was a comment-----the father of APON and well done article about the services provided at APONGAON. The public response to this article was beyond expectations----people would come for admission carrying the article. A government land official in a nearby town said that many of his friends called him to ask him if he knew about us----and he had as he had come a couple times as a guest for functions. World Federation of Therapeutic Community, held their World Conference of TC in Bali, Indonesia. Br. Ronald was invited to be one of the speakers. His topic was mainly about how APON helps street children drug addicts---with the TC program, education, skill training and of course sports. His presentation was well received. The Catholic priest who is the founder /president of the rehabilitation program that organized the conference arranged for two staff from APON to get full scholarships to attend the conference. He also helps our staff get training in Manila. - 8 -

Independent English newspaper, at a function at the Department of Narcotics Control centre. This article shows the Home Minister along with other government officials visiting the stall/ exhibition about APON at this function. The article noted among other things that Br. Ronald was the person who started the first drug rehabilitation program in Bangladesh. He was very generous in his praise of our work. Br. Ronald was also on a Talk Show on Bangladesh TV World - 9 -

with the Home Minister, Director General of the Department of Narcotic Control, a senior secretary that was shown that same day. The Home Minister is the highest ranking government official dealing with police, law enforcement, drug addiction/drug related issues, etc. so his positive comments about APON reflected respect and honor from the highest level of government officials. A walk/run rally by former St. Gregory Students, Class of 63 who were students of Br. Donald Becker and Br. Ronald Drahozal back in the 60's. They organized this rally to earn some funds for APON. Some of them even came from the USA to participate. Most seemed to remember us more as having played basketball with them back when we were much younger more than teachers although they appreciated that also. - 10 -

Holy Cross College to Hold Hoops for Hope From the streets of Bangalore, India to the classrooms in São Paulo, Brazil, the Brothers of Holy Cross continue to bring hope to people of many cultures, not just in preparing students to become citizens of the world but also to empower them in sharing that hope with others. With the foundation of faith and the intentions of developing "a more just and human society," Holy Cross College, a college founded by the Holy Cross Brothers, proudly initiates Hoops for Hope. Hoops for Hope is a student-led 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will bring awareness to the incredible work of the Brothers, while raising money for the poor communities in their ministries. Holy Cross College students are sent across international and cultural borders to serve alongside the Brothers in locations such as Ghana, Peru, Brazil, and India. All proceeds from Hoops for Hope will be used to support the many schools and ministries in these areas. Funds earned will allow students to help an orphanage such as Abayadhama in India, and the street children program, Pastoral Do Menor in Brazil -- just two of the many ministries of hope ran by the Holy Cross Brothers. Community support of this event will result in a tangible gift of hope to the children and families that make up the Holy Cross family worldwide. The Hoops for Hope tournament is open to area boys and girls ages 9 to14, and will be held April 27 28 on the campus of Holy Cross College (Notre Dame, Indiana). The cost to play in the Hoops for Hope is $100 per team, $25 per player. Applications to participate are due April 2. Those interested in additional information or a team application may visit the Hoops for Hope website at www.hcc-nd.edu/hoops4hope. - 12 -

New president of Hoban is announced March 14, 2013 The Archbishop Hoban High School Board of Directors has announced that Todd R. Sweda, Ed.D., has been appointed the next president of the school. He replaces Brother Kenneth Haders, C.S.C., who will be leaving the position at the end of the school year. Brother Kenneth has served as president of the Holy Cross school in Akron for 17 years. Dr. Sweda comes to Hoban from Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills where he has been the Assistant Headmaster since 2003. He has an extensive background in administration, institutional advancement, academic development and board relations. In his role, Dr. Sweda has worked with the Headmaster in assuring consistency between the Academy's Holy Cross mission and all activities at the independent Catholic school. He has worked closely with the Gilmour Board of Trustees as a member of the school s Executive Committee. He provided planning oversight for enrollment management and the technology department, served on Gilmour s Capital Campaign Executive Committee, and directed assessment procedures for continuing accreditation. Before becoming Assistant Headmaster, Dr. Sweda served as an English teacher, Director of the Residential Program, Director of the Middle School, Dean of Student Affairs and Dean of Academic Programs & Planning. He has also served as an academic advisor, senior project director, and student government moderator. William A. Scala, chairman of Hoban s Board of Directors, thinks the search committee has made an excellent choice. We found in Dr. Sweda someone who is committed to the Holy Cross values and traditions that make Hoban unique, Scala said. His experience as an academic - 13 -

leader is strong, and we look forward to all that he will bring to the Hoban family. Dr. Sweda has a deep appreciation for and commitment to the core values and traditions of the Brothers of Holy Cross, the first order of teaching brothers established in the United States. The Holy Cross educational tradition in this country dates from the founding of the University of Notre Dame in 1842. Dr. Sweda has participated in local and national programs to preserve and promote the unique charism of Holy Cross education. At Gilmour, he coordinated a student led diversity education program for the three Holy Cross sponsored schools in the Diocese of Cleveland (Archbishop Hoban High School, Gilmour Academy and St. Edward High School). Dr. Sweda is delighted to be coming to Hoban. I am so pleased to be joining such an extraordinary community with a long tradition of excellence in academics, athletics and cocurricular achievements. I am honored and thrilled to begin sharing in the leadership efforts to advance the school s Holy Cross mission and vision, Dr. Sweda said. Prior to his work at Gilmour, Dr. Sweda was at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Md., serving as the Director of the Annual Fund and Alumni Relations, Associate Director of the Capital Campaign and Associate Director of Institutional Advancement. During that time he also served in various roles, including English teacher and Dean. In addition to his work at Gilmour, Dr. Sweda served as a board member for the Elyria Catholic High School Educational Endowment Foundation, an adjunct instructor at the Center for Educational Leadership at Cleveland State University, and a member for several accreditation teams in the region. He is a parishioner at St. Dominic Church in Shaker Heights. Dr. Sweda received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Wittenberg University, a Master of Arts in the Humanities from Georgetown University and recently completed a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Management and Policy from Seton Hall University. - 14 -
