Habitat for Humanity Maui Fact Sheet Habitat for Humanity Maui has been building and renovating homes on Maui since 1997. To date Habitat Maui has built or renovated over 117 homes on Maui and Lanai. Habitat builds homes or renovates substandard housing for low and very low income families. Habitat Maui is currently building 10 homes in Lahaina for our partner families, some who are coming directly out of homelessness into a simple, decent and safe home. Why is Habitat for Humanity needed? Thousands of families in Hawaii are in worst-case housing situations, some paying more than half of their income just to have a roof over their heads. Many live in over-crowded conditions or houses that are dilapidated and unsafe. Countless families are one paycheck away from being homeless. Our excessively high cost of housing leaves little money for other basics like food, clothing and healthcare. Substandard housing endangers the health and safety of its occupants, erodes their hope and self-worth, and impairs children s ability to succeed in school. How does Habitat work? Habitat families are selected based on need, willingness, and ability, to contribute sweat equity to the building of their home along with other Habitat homes, and financial ability to repay a zero-interest mortgage. On average, a three bedroom Habitat home costs $150,000 to build and families pay a $625 monthly mortgage which reverts back into a revolving loan fund to build more homes for families in need of decent affordable housing. Construction is accomplished with donations of money, materials, and hundreds of hours of community volunteer labor. In the process, Habitat not only helps to build houses, it helps to build stronger communities. Why Partner with Habitat for Humanity Maui? Habitat for Humanity Maui builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter, and infuses neighborhoods with investment and inspires action to do more. Habitat is a hand-up not a hand-out. You can be part of the solution to address the affordable housing crisis on Maui.
