HOLY CROSS HEALTH A MESSAGE FROM RETIRING PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, KEVIN J. SEXTON T his year is my eighteenth year of service as president and chief executive officer of Holy Cross Health. It has been the most rewarding experience of my professional life, and I am blessed to have served every day with extraordinarily talented and committed people dealing with complex, challenging and important problems. Together, we worked for better health care for all people in our region, especially the most vulnerable. Holy Cross Health recently celebrated a glorious time with the opening of the beautiful new Holy Cross Germantown Hospital in a growing and aging community, the completion of a spectacular major addition to our flagship Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, and the addition of a fourth health center in Germantown, dedicated to serving the poor, along with health centers in Silver Spring, Aspen Hill and Gaithersburg. Over many years, Holy Cross Health has grown to become a regional health system, absolutely central to the community s health and one that takes that responsibility to heart. Mission matters at Holy Cross. Our future is bright. More people choose us for care and as a place to work or practice. Our physical and financial strength is exceptional and the collective talent and commitment of our board, executive team, managers, staff, physician partners and volunteers is awe-inspiring. Last September, I asked the Holy Cross Health Board of Directors to start to plan for my retirement, and that time has come. For me personally, Holy Cross Health has been a central part of my life and I have given it all I have. I look forward to making contributions to my community in the future, but with a little more time for other personal interests and commitments. For Holy Cross Health, there will be challenges, of course, but I have complete confidence that it will continue to earn the community s trust in meeting its health care needs by staying focused on what is important and working hard to fulfill its mission. Knowing how well Holy Cross Health is positioned, and its organizational commitment to excellence and service, give me great comfort as I leave Holy Cross Health in very good hands. It has been my pleasure to serve this community and all of you who receive this newsletter. I thank you for your trust in Holy Cross Health and for your continued support of its work. KEVIN J. SEXTON FUND TO INCREASE ACCESS AND IMPROVE COMMUNITY HEALTH This fund honors Mr. Sexton s mission-driven commitment to support vulnerable members of the community, especially patients at Holy Cross Health s four primary care health centers and two centers for obstetrics and gynecology. Funding will provide patients with direct financial support for personal needs, such as transportation to an appointment, and specialty care referrals, as well as program support for healthier communities. For more information or to make a donation, visit HolyCrossHealth.org/ SextonFund or call 301-557-GIVE (4483). HolyCrossHealth.org 3

THOMAS IS HEALTHIER LOSS s AND MORE ACTIVE AFTERWEIGHT When he began preparing for weight-loss surgery last June, Thomas McCaskill weighed approximately 400 pounds and suffered type 2 diabetes, debilitating joint pain, swelling in both legs, and severe sleep apnea. Thomas underwent bariatric surgery in December at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. In the four months since the surgery, he has lost more than 100 pounds along with his knee and joint pain. His blood sugar has stabilized to pre-diabetic levels, he swims at least five times a week, and he plans to resume surfing and playing baseball in his spare time. I chose to have my surgery at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital because the hospital was conveniently located close to my home in Montgomery Village, says Thomas McCaskill (shown left with his family and below before surgery). I was impressed by the beautiful facility and the experienced bariatric team. 4 Holy Cross Health Today

SURGERY Most importantly, Thomas now has the energy to keep up with his three young children, ages 2, 5 and 7. Have you ever tried pushing a stroller around the National Zoo when you are really overweight and it hurts to walk? asks Thomas, 41. I needed to be healthy for my kids, and I feel so much better, both physically and emotionally. Thomas surgeon, Stephen McKenna, MD, explains, I performed a sleeve gastrectomy, which surgically removes a portion of the stomach to reduce it to about 25 percent of its original size, creating a sleeve or tubelike structure. Brian Cantor, MD Stephen McKenna, MD With 20 years of experience in bariatric surgery, Holy Cross Hospital is a recognized center of excellence for bariatric surgery, accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. That same program design and responsive, patient-centered care is also available at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. As with all bariatric surgery at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, the procedure was performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, which decreases pain and recovery time for the patient. Our comprehensive program includes multiple minimally invasive surgery options, body contouring, nutrition counseling, exercise classes, and physical and emotional preparation, explains Brian Cantor, MD, Kaiser Permanente physician and medical director, Bariatric Surgery Program, Holy Cross Hospital. Patients also benefit from our outstanding team of cardiologists, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists and interventional radiologists. A unique feature of the Holy Cross program is the availability of physician assistants, who work hand-in-hand with surgeons and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, says Dr. Cantor. The physician assistants help make each patient s hospital stay as smooth and comfortable as possible. A dedicated bariatric surgery coordinator, Jeanne Ferber, is an important resource to patients during this experience. My role is to partner with patients to answer questions, plan for surgery, assist them and their families during surgery and facilitate support groups, she says. To learn more about weight-loss surgery, meet our bariatric surgeons and hear from other patients, attend an upcoming informational meeting or support group. Register today by calling 301-754-8800 or visiting HolyCrossHealth.org. YOUR SURGERY AT HOLY CROSS GERMANTOWN HOSPITAL When you or a loved one needs surgery, you have a choice. WITH CHRIS EVERY STEP OF THE WAY THROUGH JOINT REPLACEMENT Chris Wuerthner s knees have been taking a pounding for decades. Basketball, years of intense physical training and day-to-day work as a contractor took their toll. Like a lot of people, Chris hung tough until the pain in his right knee became more than a simple nuisance it was affecting the quality of his life. I had previous surgeries on my knees to clear away debris of cartilage that was causing pain. But toward the end of last year, the time was right to replace one of them, he says. Selecting a surgeon was an easy choice for Chris. He went straight to James Gilbert, MD, orthopedic surgeon, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, who had performed his previous procedures. He is fantastic and I have complete confidence in his surgical abilities. Not only is he my doctor, I also consider him my friend, Chris says. Repeated injuries had resulted in arthritis of the medial compartment in Chris knee one of three compartments of the joint, Dr. Gilbert explains. Because his problem was limited to just one part of the knee, Chris was a good candidate for a partial knee replacement, he adds. With a partial replacement patients have much better range of motion in all directions after surgery and that was perfect for an active, 53-year-old like Chris. Chris surgery was scheduled for late December 2015 at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, but preparation began weeks before with a pre-operative class to explain exactly what to expect before, during and after surgery. COMPREHENSIVE CARE The class is just one component of a comprehensive joint replacement program that features a dedicated team of doctors, nurses and therapists at both Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital who guide our patients experience from the planning stages through recovery. This comprehensive approach to care has earned Holy Cross Hospital The Joint Commission s Gold Seal of Approval for Hip and Knee Replacement, and recognition as a Blue Distinction Center+ by Blue Cross Blue Shield, explains Antoni Goral, MD, medical director, Joint Center, Holy Cross Hospital. Patients receive this same level of quality at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. James Gilbert, MD Antoni Goral, MD LECTURES AT HOLY CROSS GERMANTOWN HOSPITAL DEFEATING SPORTS INJURIES Thursday, June 9 / 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you are suffering from a sports-related injury or want to avoid getting one, come listen to our experts discuss ways to prevent injuries, what to do if you experience an injury and when to seek medical help including potential surgical options. Panelists include: Akil Benjamin, DO, Pain Medicine; and orthopedists Ricardo Cook, MD, James Gilbert, MD, Matthew Levine, MD, Douglas Murphy, MD, and Gabriel Petruccelli, MD. OVERCOMING BACK PAIN Tuesday, June 21 / 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Engage with our expert orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons for an overview of strategies for managing and treating back pain, including temporary relief, or surgery as a long-term solution. Panelists include: Jocelyn Idema, DO, Orthopedics; Jay Rhee, MD, Neurosurgery; and Navinder Sethi, MD, Orthopedics. Bring your questions to be answered by our physicians during a robust Q&A, or submit them online when you register in advance. Light refreshments will be served. Register at HolyCrossHealth.org or call 301-754-8800. 6 Holy Cross Health Today

EXPERTISE AND PRIVATE ROOMS Holy Cross physicians use evidence-based practices to provide patients with better outcomes through a full continuum of pain management, rehabilitative support, surgical expertise, and health and wellness programs that promote joint health, explains Dr. Goral. While there is no place like home, especially when recovering from surgery, both Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital offer patients the comfort of a private room. All of these resources came together for Chris and the results are proof of the program s excellence. Hours after my surgery, the therapist had me up and walking, he says. The nurses and technicians were terrific and I was home the very next day. The joint replacement team works with patients and their families or support person to determine what type of follow-up services are best after discharge from the hospital. Chris says, The hospital arranged for a couple of weeks of home physical therapy and outpatient therapy after that. JOINT REPLACEMENT CLASS FREE Our pre-operative class is now available at both Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. For more information, see page 10 or visit HolyCrossHealth.org/ Joints. At my eight-week post knee surgery appointment with Dr. Gilbert, I was feeling remarkably better and already back to work remodeling a kitchen, explains Chris Wuerthner. To find a physician or surgeon at Holy Cross Hospital or Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, visit HolyCrossHealth.org or call 301-754-8800. HolyCrossHealth.org 7

Serving, Succeeding, Improving Health Inspired by our mission as a Catholic, not-for-profit health system, Holy Cross Health embraces its responsibility to reinvest earnings into sustainable community benefit programs. We have developed an interconnected network of services and resources to serve everyone, regardless of the severity of their health issues or their financial or insurance status. In fiscal 2015, Holy Cross Health provided more than I was depressed before I started Senior Fit. Now I feel much better and more relaxed. I push myself to come to class and I never miss a class, even when I don t feel like coming. Chetna Shukla, Senior Fit participant in Community Benefit, including: for Charity Care Providing free or reduced-cost service to those facing financial barriers to care. for Mission-Driven Health Services resulting in over 54,000 health care encounters with patients. for Community Health Services providing health screenings with links to treatment, as well as education, lectures and exercise programs helped us engage members of the community through almost 250,000 encounters. SENIOR FIT One important example of Holy Cross Health s community benefit is our innovative Senior Fit program. Now in its 21st year, Holy Cross Health s successful Senior Fit program has become the region s largest organized physical activity program for seniors 55 and older. This free, 45-minute exercise program has grown to 69 classes offered at 24 community-based sites, serving an average of 1,230 participants each week. Regular exercise and physical conditioning are proven to prevent or alleviate many of the most pervasive health issues facing the individuals and communities we serve including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and age-related conditions. Holy Cross Health has responded to our communities needs for fitness through an extensive network of free or low-cost community health programs offered throughout Montgomery and Prince George s counties, more than 30 of which promote fitness and physical activity for residents of all ages, says Annice Cody, president, Holy Cross Health Network. Senior Fit participant in our Germantown location, Seda Gelenia, says, You have to move your body or your muscles will atrophy. When I miss a class, I can tell. HOLY CROSS HEALTH INC 1500 Forest Glen Road Silver Spring, MD 20910-1484 Nonprofit Org U.S. Postage PAID PPCO Kevin J. Sexton / President and CEO, Holy Cross Health Judith Rogers / President, Holy Cross Hospital Doug Ryder / President, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital Annice Cody / President, Holy Cross Health Network BONNIE S SPIRIT OF GIVING Holy Cross Hospital gave me the best care I ve ever had, says Bonnie Holt, which is why she is willing to drive more than 40 miles from her home in Waldorf to the hospital in Silver Spring. Bonnie first came to Holy Cross Hospital based on a friend s recommendation. She was treated in the Emergency Department and hospitalized for a life-threatening infection. Months later, when she needed care again, she chose to return to Holy Cross Hospital because of the excellent care she had received. A team of specialists diagnosed the cause of the problem and performed the surgery Bonnie needed for a full recovery. Bonnie has since asked the doctor who treated her when she was hospitalized to be her primary care physician. Other members of her family now also choose to go to Holy Cross Hospital for care, and her first grandchild will be born there this spring. The quality of the service makes the drive worth it, she says. Based on her experience, Bonnie Holt began contributing to the Holy Cross Health Foundation, saying, I want to give back and show my appreciation for the care my family and I receive. I also like supporting Holy Cross Health because the organization treats a lot of patients who don t have insurance. The Holy Cross Health Foundation gives everyone the opportunity to support the important work of Holy Cross Health.
