Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities 2017 Engaged Research Development Seed Grants Info Session February 16, 2017 Center for Community Health Institute for Public Health and Medicine and Northwestern University Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute 1
Goals for the Session Seed Grant Program Purpose/Eligibility Application and Review Process Resources Q&A 2
Community-engaged research (CEnR) Approach for conducting research in a collaborative way Bidirectional exchange of expertise between academics (scientific experts) and communities/stakeholders (local, cultural, practice experts) that results in informed decision-making about design/conduct/use of research. Broad spectrum: minimal collaboration to equal partners in all aspects of the research 3
Community-Engaged Research Key Principles Focuses on addressing local health issues/priorities Builds on strengths & resources within community Facilitates collaboration in all phases of research Mutual respect of values. Power sharing & flexibility. Academics & community learning together Disseminates findings to all partners Strives for results that mobilize & catalyze change Israel BA, EngE, Schulz AJ, and Parker EA eds. 4 (2005) Methods in community-based participatory research for health. Jossey-Bass: San Francisco, CA
ARCC 2017 Seed Grant Goals Support community-engaged research partnership and project development Lay foundation for development of communityengaged research projects/proposals for external funding 5
2017 Seed Grants- 2 types of awards Research Partnership Development Awards Similar to Partnership Development grants awarded in earlier rounds Up to $5K, Up to 12 months Engaged Research Project Development Awards Up to $20 (max request, not per year), Up to 24 months 6
Both types of Awards support the spectrum of engagement May be partnerships or projects to explore community-based participatory research (CBPR) patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) or other types of engaged research collaborations Can be focused on any type of research- e.g. public health/population health research, clinical research, etc. CCH Principles of Engagement: Collaboration, Respect, Equity, Transparency, Impact 7
Partnership Development Grants Intended to support newly developing partnerships Possible activities: Relationship building, Exploring areas of shared interest/compatible skills, Engaging addtl. partners Defining roles/responsibilities of partners Developing partnership/engagement infrastructure/processes Building capacity of community and academic partners Planning future collaboration and proposals 8
Engaged Research Project Development Grants Intended to support existing partnerships Required activities: Must include some form of data collection or analysis Should also include a focus on strengthening & extending partnership sustainability & capacity 9
Engaged Research Project Development Grants- Data collection/analysis Required activities: collaboratively identify, collect, and/or analyze new needs/assets assessment/pilot data or review and interpret existing data or collaboratively develop/pilot test new interventions to inform further study or demonstrate potential impact/capacity for application for external funding 10
Engaged Research Project Development Grants Other possible activities (in addition to data collection/analysis) collaboratively design components of engaged research project research questions methodologies recruitment & retention approaches interventions data collection/analysis instruments & protocols dissemination & implementation plans prepare proposals for external research funding partnership building activities to deepen relationships capacity development related to future research 11
Eligibility Submit jointly by community-academic partnership Community co-pi (community/faith/public organization) Academic co-pi (Northwestern faculty member- regular or adjunct) Applications involving partners not previously involved in engaged research are prioritized Applicants needing assistance to connect with possible partners should contact ARCC ASAP 12

Engaged Research Project Development Applications Should also include Detail about prior activities of existing partnership Description of planned data collection/analysis and/or intervention development/pilot testing Clear description of how proposed data collection/analysis, etc. will contribute to future research & competiveness for funding (specific grant mechanism, if possible) 17
Budget Must use budget form provided on ARCC website No specific form for budget justification Split budget (proportions determined by team): $ for academic partner/related expenses to academic co-pi $ for community partner/related expenses to community co-pi Possible expenses support partnership meetings support participation of community/academic partners and/or community residents/patients/stakeholders Support staff/time on grant activities (manage meetings/ logistics, collect/analyze data) consult with methodological experts for research design (e.g. biostatistician, qualitative researcher) 18
