This month we ll watch lectures nine (The First Exhibition) and 10 (Monet and Renoir in Argenteuill). In this first column, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to making the New Westport Library Room Collection a viable and ongoing daily life entity of the Bishop Spencer Place Community, by attending the April 7 Open House, by visiting the Saturday morning sessions, by checking out books, by their verbal and written input, and by their recent donations, notably from Barbara Weary, Bill Bates, Bernie Jones, Dr. Doug Rushing, Bob Heyer, Clark and Ruth Achelpohl, and by others who might make donations between my writing this column and its appearance in July. Several large sets were donated during June. Chaplains CORNER On the 4th of July our Grand Old Flag is front and center thanks to the work of an upholsterer! In colonial times, upholsterers did all kinds of sewing, from furniture to fashion to flags. Betsy Ross was an upholsterer who knew George Washington from church and who kept his ruffles and cuffs in good repair. Washington showed her a rough design of the new flag he wanted for our new nation; she made a few changes, and the Star Spangled Banner has waved o er the land of the free and the home of the brave ever since. On the 4th of July we celebrate the birth of our democracy with concerts and picnics and fireworks and parades. May we also take a moment to give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy, which some can only dream about, and to thank the One from whom all our blessings flow. Speaker Series Kevin Lyons Thursday, July 26, 3:00 p.m. Kevin Lyons, Chief U.S. Probation Officer, joins us to speak about the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services System. The system s mission reflects its dedication to serve the community, the courts, and the people who come before the courts. Through its officers and other employees, the system works to make the criminal justice process effective and the public safe. 6 All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all his love. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Garden TIME Lynn Thiel, July 3 Jean Ghio, July 4 Betty Adams, July 7 Charlotte Bliss, July 12 Jeannette Nichols, July 14 Ethel Jianas, July 15 Zanna Reeder, July 16 Dave Fiola, July 17 Lester Palmer, July 22 Phillip Levi, July 23 Richard Coopersmith, July 25 Sally Chapple, July 29 Sally Kampfe, July 29 Sarah Oliver, July 29 Margie Elliott, July 31 Louise Glotzbach, July 31 IN LOVING MEMORY NOTABLE Robert Bridges We are proud to report our own Bert Bates traveled to St. Louis in June to receive one of only 25 inaugural Icon Awards from Missouri Lawyers Media, recognizing distinguished men and women for their exemplary careers and longstanding commitment to the Missouri legal community. Congratulations, Bert! The angel statue that had been standing against a wall in back of the two evergreen trees was moved to a more visible location in front of the memorial plaques. The beautiful statue was donated by Charlotte Bliss, and the new location is what she originally desired. Mysteriously, someone has since secretly planted four flowering annuals by the angel s sides. Thanks for your help, whoever you are! Our rose bushes seem to have survived our up-anddown winter and the lack of a satisfactory spring. They seemed to be rather slow in their progress, and some of the committee were contemplating replacing the roses under the memorial plaques with hardy perennial hibiscuses. The annual hibiscuses in the planters at both ends of the concrete bench have thrived and continuously opened an abundance of beautiful flowers as soon as they were planted. Comments, suggestions, and questions from residents are welcomed by committee members. Bobbie Ellis 7
