2 Leadership Delray thanks Delray Beach Fire Department led by Chief Danielle Connor & her wonderful staff for a fantastic morning of learning what all our local heroes do for us to keep us safe in our community on a daily basis. EMS Training Steven Anderson, Division Chief EMS April s EMS training brought the SimMan and SimBaby to town for a three day appearance. Made possible in part by a grant from the State of Florida, the Emergency Medicine Learning & Resource Center Mobile Simulation Lab provided an excellent opportunity to experience realistic emergency medicine training at no charge to the Fire Department. The lab, which features a realistic ambulance setting is built within a 45-foot coach which houses both SimMan and SimBaby. Both of which are realistic, anatomically accurate mannequins equipped with a number of features, including a realistic airway system; an intravenous arm; physiologically correct carotid, femoral, brachial and radial pulses; and more than 2,500 cardiac rhythm variants, to allow for a variety of realistic patient care scenarios. SimMan can produce spontaneous breathing, heart and lung sounds, as well as coughing, moaning and various voice sounds. The Mobile Simulation Lab offered Fire Department Paramedics/EMT s with an interactive training approach with tactile simulation because of the realistic patient that engages participants in making appropriate decisions, taking timely actions, and preparing them for the unexpected. This educational tool is an essential part to bridge the gap between traditional didactic training methods and actual procedures on patients. I can t emphasis enough we all need more of this hands-on training in the ever evolving field of emergency medicine. Affording this training was a savings to the training budget of $6000 for the three day experience. No need to worry if you missed out on the first training sessions because you will have a chance later this year to take advantage of this excellent educational tool.

5 Update Danielle Connor, Fire Chief March proved to be a very busy month for DBFR. The St. Patrick s Day Parade continues to grow bigger and bigger each year. This year, we were fortunate to have a number of DBFR retirees make the trip for participation. How did that work out? Let s just say that they had to earn their keep! It was wonderful to see some familiar faces from the past, and just as wonderful to see the growing number of current personnel marching each year. On Saturday March 24 th, a large delegation from the fire department showed up to participate in the City s annual Curb Appeal event. This event has replaced Paint Up Delray and involves both house painting and landscape design. We all worked (hard) together on the residence of Fire Marshal Victor Williams mother-in-law on SW 11 Avenue. Thank you to everyone who came out on that hot Saturday morning. The effort was well worth it..the house and the yard came out beautifully! Congratulations to Acting Division Chief Joe Falcone and his wife Devon on the birth of their son, Ronan Dominic Falcone! Their healthy son was born on March 30 th and joins older sister Adrianna. It is my pleasure to announce that Kevin Green has been hired as the new Assistant Chief of Administration for Delray Beach Fire-Rescue. Chief Green comes to DBFR from the West Palm Beach Fire Department where in his nearly 28 years he has served as a Firefighter, Driver Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and finally Assistant Chief. He holds an array of professional certifications, including Paramedic, Hazardous Materials, Dive Rescue I, Live Fire Training Instructor I, Instructor III, Incident Safety Officer, and ICS for High Rise Operations. Chief Green earned a Bachelor s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix, as well as Associates Degrees in both Fire Science and Emergency Medical Services from Palm Beach State College. He has worked as an instructor at both South Tech and Palm Beach State College Fire Academies and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. Chief Green will start with DBFR on June 4 th. Please join me in welcoming Chief Green to our department! Senior Staff has been working very hard on budget preparation for next fiscal year. Thank you to everyone for your hard work and commitment to the process. Each Division Chief is responsible for the preparation of their budget requests, and I can tell you that their research and time investment make it infinitely easier to put together the final product. Each week I continue to get notes, cards, letters, and emails complementing our personnel on their professionalism and the good job done on emergency calls. Thank you for your hard work and for truly representing DBFR so well. Often times, residents or business owners call us when there is either a fire or medical emergency..they are stressed, afraid, and uncertain. Their first interactions with our fire department is under these less than ideal circumstances. By being professional and exhibiting compassion, you make a difference in their outcome and their perceptions of our services. Our reputation is valuable..thank you for upholding it every single day.
6 DBFR team placed first in the 2012 Boca Burn Tournament. The tournament was held on March 31 st and April 1 st. Our team won 6 games over the 2 days and ended up winning the tournament undefeated.
