APPLICANT COVER SHEET/SIGNATURE PAGE (to be signed and submitted to regional cluster lead) 2. APPLICANT INFORMATION AND NARRATIVES (below) Project Preferences CNCS has begun a new focus on impact and outcomes with regard to the initiatives that they fund. Special consideration will be given to applicants that have a vision for focusing their MLK Day efforts on a limited number of community needs. We are especially interested in activities that match goals in the following areas: economic opportunity, education, healthy futures, and disaster services. (For more information about planning activities in these focus areas please visit the MLK Day web site at http://www.mlkday.org [1]) The following are strongly encouraged components for a successful MLK Day of Service (applicants should choose one of more of the following components): Collaborative grants with a minimum of 2 campuses. Organize disaster preparedness training with a community partner or your local Red Cross. (http://www.redcross.org/prepare [2]) Implementation of the MLK Challenge model. (see http://www.wicampuscompact.org/mlk/ [3] for more information) Partnerships with national service organizations/cncs grantees (AmeriCorps, Foster Grandparents, City Year, etc.) Organization of a Semester of Service (9-11 Day of Service through MLK Day or MLK Day through Global Youth Service Day) Organization of an Alternative Break (MLK Day through completion of Alternative Break) Participation in the MLK Day of Service National Food Drive. (Each volunteer brings a non-perishable food item to the service site on MLK Day.) Focus on economic opportunity issues. (Financial Literacy Training, Tax Preparation) Grantee Requirements Co-apply (organization, contact, and email) with a minimum of 2 community partners. Reach out to a minimum of 5 community partners. No indirects can be taken out for the MLK Day of Service Grants. (However, they can be used as match with supporting documentation.) Objectives The goal of the MLK Day of Service grants is to honor the memory of Dr. King by making the national holiday a day of service. Mini-grantees will build projects that are dynamic and relevant by combining meaningful service, thoughtful reflection, education on the life and work of Dr. King, and opportunities for sustained service and ongoing community involvement. Specifically, applicants should be able to demonstrate the following four program objectives for all projects: Objective #1: Mobilization of Large Numbers of College Students Objective #2: Expansion of MLK Day of Service Amongst Colleges Objective #3: Impact on Local Communities with a focus on collaboration and increasing publicprivate partnerships.
