Welcome, MESM Class of 2019! We re excited for you to meet your community. This program provides an overview of all MESM student orientation activities. New MESM students are expected to participate in all sessions except where noted optional. Important deadlines within orientation to highlight: Monday, September 18: Create your U-Mail account before Computer Orientation and read the Bren School MESM Handbook for the Bren 101 session on Tuesday, September 19. Tuesday, September 19: International students, please make sure you have completed the online portion of CALI training (http://oiss.sa.ucsb.edu/programs/cali-training) before attending the in-person training tomorrow. Wednesday, September 20: Your Student Photo wil be taken tomorrow, so plan to bring/wear something professional (at least on top) tomorrow. Thursday, September 21: Email your policy memo to the Academic Programs team via their Box email address by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22 (see original email from Academic Programs team for address); print two copies of your policy memo for the second part of the Writing Workshop on Friday, September 22. Friday, September 22: Upload your resume to your individual career folder on Box, shared between you and the career team. You will get th e-mail address for your shared Box folder by the end of today. Resumes will be used in the Resume Design Workshop on Monday. Activate/Create your Bren Connect Account. Connell Courtyard Learn about Bren s facilities and the rooms most often utilized by its students. (Optional) Students not participating in the tour can arrive at 8:45 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Welcome & Introductions Bren Hall 1414, Colloquium Room Dean Steven Gaines welcomes the Class of 2019 to the Bren School, followed by staff introductions and an activity led by the Bren School s Career Development Team to introduce students to the broader UCSB campus. 1:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Team-Building Activity Bren Hall, Michael J. Connell Courtyard The Bren School s Career Development team leads an activity to help students get to know one another while demonstrating the importance of building a strong professional network. Please see the email from the Admissions team for your group assignment. 2:15 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Writing Workshop, Part 1 Bren Hall 1414, Colloquium Room Environmental Communication Program Manager Dr. Lisa Leombruni introduces principles of excellent writing, how to compose a professional bio and gives students their mandatory writing assignments and the rubric for scoring. Wednesday, September 20, 2017 8:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. English Language Placement Exam Buchanan Hall 1910 The ELPE is a 2-hour written exam administered to new UCSB international students used to assess if specialized instruction in graduate writing is needed. Students must bring with them to the exam their UCSB Access card (or photo ID and perm number) and a pen or pencil. All international students whose first language is not English are required to complete the ELPE. International Student CALI Training UCen Corwin Pavilion The UCSB Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) offers CALI Training, which is designed to help new international students navigate Cultural Awareness, Laws, and Immigration in the U.S., introduce them to cam pus resources and expectations, and ensure they understand how to stay in status while getting the most from their UCSB experience. Incoming international students are required by Federal Immigration Policy to attend CALI Training. *If you are not required to attend this training, you could work on your writing assignment or bio. * 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. UCSB and Bren Resources Bren Hall 1414, Colloquium Room Know your campus resources: Living a healthy lifestyle is essential to your success at UCSB. Come learn more about these two foci from Eco-Entrepreneurship Program Manager Emily Cotter and Environmental Communication Program Manager Dr. Lisa Leombruni. This session is optional for MESM students. Eco-Entrepreneurship Focus: 1:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. SECM Focus: 1:30 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Lab Safety Orientation Bren Hall 1424, Seminar Room Overview of lab safety training and techniques with Environmental Health and Safety. All students hired to work in a UCSB lab facility for the 2017-18 year are required to complete this mandatory safety training. This includes being a TA in MCDB, EEMB and other sciences. Information session is followed by a luncheon and Campus Resource Fair.
