Flavia Cuervo Harvard University Flavia graduated from Harvard University in May. Throughout her time there she learned, explored, and challenged herself. Flavia worked with a variety of teams and organizations, including the Model UN and became the publisher of The Harvard Political Review. She had the opportunity to meet and work with many brilliant and talented people. After two summers working at Facebook, Flavia was hired by the company and will begin working in their Manhattan office in early August. Before moving there, she has elected to spend the summer working in politics, helping Mike Johnston become the next governor of Colorado. Krisna Maddy University of Pennsylvania Graduated from UPenn in May and was selected one of ten most impactful graduates of the year. Her research on Alzheimer s Disease and Parkinson s Disease was accepted for a presentation at the Neurological Association s (ANA) 2018 Annual Meeting. Karina Padron New York University Graduated on May 18th from NYU s Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in Film & TV. She is currently in Pre-Production for her final Thesis film at NYU: Saving Prufrock, which tells the story of Ada, a young Cuban housekeeper from Miami, who meets a client who is the living incarnation of T.S. Eliot s J. Alfred Prufrock. Karina wants the film to mean something to young children of immigrants who may think where they are from limits them, but rather to see that it enhances their ability as story tellers and as human beings. Laura successfully completed her first year at American University. She worked as the Youth Policy Associate at DCAYA -- a non-profit that works with local government and the community to build a Youth-Friendly DC -- and became a staffer at The Eagle, the University s newspaper and was able to cover some great stories, including Malala s visit to Washington, DC. Laura Romero journalism continues This May, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) opened a chapter at American University. Laura was selected to serve as the chapter s president and will attend the national convention this summer on their behalf Joyce Cardenas alternative breaks traveling log Ankevia Taylor orientation leader Ankevia, who is beginning her third year at Florida State University, was selected as a 2018 orientation leader at Florida State University under the New Student and Family Programs! Joyce Cardenas, a sophomore at FIU traveled to Guyana with an organization called Alternative Breaks (ab) at FIU for service. Her team helped with beautification projects at the community center while also mentoring kids, ranging in age from 4 to 15, about a variety of issues, including: the importance of school, education, and preventing and dealing with the trauma of abuse. In December Joyce will travel with the same organization to provide service in South Africa, and she is also in the planning stages for a third trip. I m just excited to go wherever help is needed, she said and if anyone is interested in donating new or gently used books, reach out to Joyce. Her organization is collecting books to build the children in Guyana a library in the community center. Maria Vasquez stepping into advertising Maria Vasquez recently received admission into Florida State s Arrowhead Advertising team, which is FSU s chapter of the American Advertising Federation. Every year they team up to create an advertising campaign and compete against other schools in the U.S. in the National Student Advertising Competition. She is very honored to be on the team over the past twelve years, Arrowhead has made it to the national level eight times and has never finished below 3rd place in the district competition. Maria will be on their team for social media. She also got hired at FSU s Union Production as a graphic designer. Maria will be working closely with their PR team to design promotional material for all of their student activities for the next school year. 4 cambridge connect
Michele Wu microsoft goes wu This summer, Michele is interning at Microsoft a dream of hers since stepping foot into Mr. Kynerd s engineering class. Michele is working in Seattle as an Explore Intern, a program specifically designed for first and second year college students. The program provides a hands-on experience with software development, directly involved with Microsoft technologies and allows interns the opportunity to dive into different software engineering roles. She is currently working on the Cortana team, working to create a reactive voice feature that pulls suggested tasks from emails in order to predict schedules and inspire a more productive day. She specially enjoys the opportunity to gain exposure in machine learning and artificial intelligence fields that she wants to work in in the future. Since starting, Michele has been challenged and inspired by her managers, mentors, and even the CEO to utilize computer science as a tool to empower every person to achieve more everyday. Jonathan Tagoe fulfilling first year of college Jonathan Tagoe has been up to a lot since he graduated last year. During his first year of college, he learnt about the different dynamics in academia. His first semester was loaded: Multivariable Calculus, Physics Mechanics, Spanish 1 & 2, Intro Biology and an Intro Python programming class. In January, his classmates and himself have their independent activities period, just a month to do whatever they want. Jonathan went to Spain to continue his Spanish classes and he got to see so much of the country! During his second semester, he took an intro product design class called Toy Product Design, which was extremely fun and got to present his final project through as skit.
