City of Charleston South Carolina DEAR MOJA FESTIVAL GUESTS: Welcome to the 2015 MOJA Arts Festival, Charleston s annual celebration of African-American and Caribbean arts and culture! Proudly produced by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in a longstanding partnership with the all-volunteer MOJA Arts Festival Planning Committee, this festive event stands out in the autumn season as a vibrant reflection of the Lowcountry s cultural vitality. Equally important, year after year, MOJA brings Charleston together in a glorious spirit of community, as neighbors, friends and families gather to share in the bountiful experiences the Festival has to offer. During the eleven days of the MOJA Arts Festival, audiences will be able to enjoy spectacular live music in some of Charleston s most beautiful settings; drama and musical theatre at the Historic Dock Street Theatre; a Gullah-Geechee play; poetry and literary events; musical concerts and classical recitals featuring the Choraliers Music Club and some of our most acclaimed local artists; the annual MOJA gospel concert; and memorable visual arts exhibitions. The Festival wraps up with a weekend that includes the annual Community Tribute Luncheon at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, headline R&B acts at The Joe, and the MOJA Finale at Hampton Park. We are extremely fortunate to be able to work with countless community partners, dedicated individual volunteers, and the wonderful artists and audiences that bring the MOJA Arts Festival to life. We extend sincere thanks and gratitude to the MOJA Arts Festival Planning Committee, chaired this year by Angel R. Quintero, who, along with the other committee members and coordinators, works closely with the Office of Cultural Affairs staff, particularly MOJA Program Coordinator, Romaine Marion-Heyward. MOJA s Advisory Committee is chaired by the Honorable James E. Clyburn, and we recognize the Committee s tireless advocacy for the Festival. Special thanks to Charleston City Council for their steadfast support of the MOJA Arts Festival and to the individuals, foundations, government agencies and corporations who provide funding, grants, and in-kind donations that help make MOJA accessible. We also offer a round of hearty applause to all of the Office of Cultural Affairs team and to the various City departments that make MOJA a resounding success each year: Parks, Recreation, Legal, Finance, Budget, Police, Traffic & Transportation, Information Technology, Human Resources, Public Services, Public Information, Special Facilities, and the Mayor s Office. Finally, we salute the memory of the creator of the iconic heart that graces the cover of this program guide: Charleston s master blacksmith, Philip Simmons. This powerful image, photographed by local artist Steve Lepre, evokes the unwavering, sustaining strength of our community, and reminds us that it is through vision and artistry, as well as resolve and hard work, that we enrich our collective heritage. We invite you to bring your family and friends to this year s MOJA Arts Festival, and to delight in MOJA s many and diverse arts and cultural experiences. We look forward to seeing you!
