The first verse ends with some words that speak to Zacchaeus s situation in this weekend s Gospel, both physically and spiritually. Zacchaeus has a difficult time seeing in large crowds because he is so short in stature. So he scoots up a tree to get a better view, and it is there that he begins to see--not only the parade of people and Jesus, but something more. Jesus notices Zacchaeus in the tree and invites himself to dinner at Zacchaeus s house. The righteous people are absolutely scandalized that Jesus put himself amongst all the sinners, but this is when Zacchaeus truly begins to see what he is called to, which is honesty and true generosity. It s good that Jesus is still coming to dwell among us sinners today. Just like Zacchaeus, we can begin to see that we don t need to be stuck in our own sin, if we but follow the example of Christ, made present in the breaking of the bread. Maybe we all enjoy Amazing Grace so much because it s our story, for once I was lost, but now I see. Fr. Marty

What spiritual reading do you do on a regular basis: books, periodicals, your Diocesan newspaper, parish faith formation programs, retreats, and the like? What is your strategy for personal formation for yourself and your spouse? As you develop yourself in your faith, you are better equipped to be a spiritual model and leader to influence the faith formation in your family.

White Ribbons Against Pornography Week (WRAP): Sunday, October 30- Saturday, November 5. It is sponsored by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (formerly called Morality in Media) and is one of the organizations sponsored by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. CDA members will be handing out white ribbons and brochures after all Masses. Please wear your white ribbon proudly all week and read the brochure so that you can discuss the harm that pornography does to individuals, families and the community. Honey Sunday: November 5/6. Individuals will be in the Gathering Area, after all Masses that weekend, selling honey. World Mission Sunday: Thank you for your generous response to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith last weekend on World Mission Sunday. Our parish raised $536.00. While some go to serve in other countries to develop the Church and serve its people, all of us are called to pray and support the Missions from right where we live. To continue answering this call, download the Mission App which makes it possible for you to meet and support religious Sisters and Brothers, Priests and dedicated Lay Leaders, who provide help and hope in some of the world s poorest places. These missionaries provide essential education and health care, social outreach and advocacy, and pastoral service. They address basic human needs, while in every moment offering spiritual comfort and support to the suffering and the marginalized. Join them in mission every day, as you joined them this past World Mission Sunday. Catholic Daughters Bake Sale: Saturday, November 12, after the 5:30 p.m. Mass; and Sunday, November 13, after the 8:00 a.m. & 10:00 a.m. Masses. Coffee & Rolls: We are in need of individuals to serve coffee and rolls on Sundays after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Masses. You don t have to do it every weekend, but sign-up for the weekend that you want to help. If you are interested, please contact the Parish Office at 384-0532. Notes from the Parish Nurse: It is that time of year to think about the flu. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Signs and symptoms of the flu are: fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue. The flu virus is spread by droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose. You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. CDC recommends everyday prevention actions like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and frequent hand washing. If you are sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or necessities. Stay away from others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. Wear a mask if you need to go outside the home. Wash hands frequently to keep from spreading to others. We must remember that people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), pregnant women, and young children are at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services: Next week, our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, Serving those who serve, and its ministry to provide the same pastoral care and services to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations, as does any other Catholic diocese. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chaplains are paid for by the U.S. Government, the AMS receives no funding from government or the military for its programs and services, including the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program, which provides priests for home dioceses and for the military chaplaincy. To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection.
