FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON Media Release (2017 Bowl Season) Contact: Russell Anderson rdanderson@c-usa.org CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION FLORIDA ATLANTIC WINS C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Lane Kiffin s first season at Florida Atlantic brought the school s first Conference USA title, as the Owls defeated North Texas, 41-17, in the 2017 Dynacraft Conference USA Championship Game on Saturday. Devin Singletary had 26 carries for 164 yards and three touchdowns for the Owls, who extended their unbeaten streak to nine games and were undefeated against C-USA opponents this season. Jason Driskel completed 15 of 27 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown for FAU, and Kalib Woods had a school-record 208 receiving yards. Words can t explain it, Singletary said. It s one of the best feelings ever. FAU (10-3) had 633 yards of offense, and Kiffin s last play call of the day was one where he ordered his brother defensive coordinator Chris Kiffin to get a water bucket dumped on him. FAU s players then got the head coach with one, and the celebration was underway. It s not about me, Kiffin said on the field afterward. I m so happy for these players, for these fans.... It s just a special year. The Owls, who beat North Texas 69-31 in the regular season, took a 34-0 lead in the first 33 minutes on Saturday. FAU had gains of 47, 49, 22, 44, 21 and 34 yards in the first quarter alone, and the lead was never really threatened. Mason Fine completed 28 of 44 passes for 367 yards for the Mean Green (9-4), whose five-game winning streak was snapped. Turner Smiley had a touchdown catch and Evan Johnson ran one in for North Texas, which will be bowl-bound for the second straight year. The 10-win season matches Kiffin s best as a head coach. He went 10-2 at USC in 2011. You have to give credit to Coach Kiffin and FAU, North Texas coach Seth Littrell said. They re a really good football team.... They re unbelievable. It took Kiffin less than a full year to turn FAU s fortunes around. He inherited a program that was coming off three consecutive 3-9 seasons, and took over after three years as Nick Saban s offensive coordinator at Alabama. Toward the end of last season, Saban said he wanted to help Kiffin land another head-coaching chance amid speculation that Kiffin wouldn t have been back at Alabama otherwise. FAU never looked at the Kiffin hire as a risk. Even if the Owls did, it has officially paid off now. He s been taught by the best, FAU athletic director Pat Chun said. He s had great successes. I think things get lost. He had a winning record as a head coach and he s learned from his failures. So you put all those together... you thought this could be a place where he achieved a level of success that he had not achieved before. CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES **Florida Atlantic becomes the ninth different school to win the Conference USA Championship Game in its 13-year history. **Florida Atlantic becomes the second team to go undefeated in conference play and then win the C- USA Championship Game. RICE NAMES BLOOMGREN COACH Stanford Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Mike Bloomgren has agreed to become the 19th head football coach at Rice. Bloomgren comes to Rice after seven seasons with the Cardinal, first as the offensive line coach (2011-12) and then assuming the reigns of Stanford s pro style offensive attack in 2013, setting the stage for one of the most successful decades in the program s rich history. Stanford has won eight or more games in each of his seasons and reached the Pac-12 Football Championship four times, winning three titles. DIMEL NAMED UTEP COACH Dana Dimel was named the 26th head coach in UTEP football history. Dimel was previously the head coach at Wyoming and Houston. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator, running backs coach and tight ends coach at his alma mater, Kansas State, where he has worked since 2009. He also spent three seasons on the staff at Arizona. GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING Florida Atlantic sophomore RB Devin Motor Singletary rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns as the Owls earned their ninth consecutive victory by winning C-USA Championship Game, 41-17 over North Texas. Singletary, who has scored more rushing touchdowns this season (29) than previous school career record-holder Alfred Morris had in four years from 2008-11 (27), has topped 100 yards in 10 straight games for the Owls. He has a nation-leading 29 rushing touchdowns this season (eight more than any other player) and 30 total touchdowns. Both of those marks tie the C-USA records in those categories, set by UCF RB Kevin Smith, now his running backs coach. Singletary is currently fourth nationally with 1,796 rushing yards. With Singletary leading the way, Florida Atlantic is sixth nationally in rushing, averaging 283.2 yards per game. QUICK HITTERS MASON IS FINE FOR MEAN GREEN North Texas closed out the regular season on a fivegame winning streak, winning the West Division and playing in its first C-USA Championship Game. Sophomore QB Mason Fine was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Year after completing 294-of- 457 passes for 3,749 yards with a league-best 28 touchdown passes (12th among all FBS signal-callers). Fine has established new single-season passing yardage and touchdown records for the Mean Green. He threw for more than 300 yards in five games and had six games with three or more touchdown passes, including a pair of four TD outings. Fine led North Texas to a bid to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, giving the Mean Green back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time since making four straight bowls from 2001-04. With Fine leading the way, the Mean Green has set program single-season records for most points, total yards and first downs. North Texas has scored 467 points this year, surpassing the previous best of 434 in 1951 (which was also a 12-game season); have accumulated 6,071 yards of offense, topping the 2013 s total of 5,336; and have a league-best 319 first downs, bettering 2013 s mark of 279. UAB S MEMORABLE RETURN WILL FINISH IN THE BAHAMAS Capping off its historic 2017 season, UAB will represent Conference USA and play Ohio in the 2017 Bahamas Bowl on Friday, Dec. 22 at Nassau s Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. CST and the contest will be televised on ESPN. UAB set three program records as it finished the regular season at 8-4 overall and 6-2 in Conference USA. The Blazers eight overall victories are a single season FBS record, surpassing the 2000 and 2004 teams who each won seven, while the six conference wins outdid the 2004 team who won five. The win also gave UAB a perfect 6-0 record at home this season, marking the most wins at Legion Field in a season in program history. The Blazers finished 2017 second in the West Division and will play in their second ever bowl game, joining the 2004 team who played in the Hawai i Bowl. WHAT BROWN CAN DO UAB RB Spencer Brown was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year after rushing for 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns. That is the second-highest yardage by a C-USA rookie runner. Brown needs just 97 yards in the Bahamas Bowl to break the record. C-USA Freshman Rushing Yards 1,388 Damion Fletcher, Southern Miss 2006 1,292 Spencer Brown, UAB 2017 1,247 Bryce Beall, Houston 2008 HERE COMES THE JUDGE Southern Miss senior RB Ito Smith heads to the Golden Eagles trip to the Walk-On s Independence Bowl with three straight 100-yard games, seven this season and 23 in his career. Smith became the school s all-time all-purpose yard leader in the regular season finale, ending the day with 162 all-purpose yards and 6,344 for his career, surpassing Damion Fletcher (2006-09), who previously held the school lead with 6,253 yards. Picked in the preseason to finish fifth in the East Division, Kiffin led the Owls to a perfect 8-0 mark in Conference USA games and a victory in the 2017 Dynacraft C-USA Football Championship Game, becoming just the second school in league history to finish undefeated in league play and win the title game.
