Ron Browning, President 7017 Partridge Place College Heights Estates, MD 20782 CHEA Residents Spring 2018

College Heights Estates Association Spring 2018 President s Letter Greetings College Heights Estates Residents, Spring 2018 This has been an exciting time from a weather perspective these past few months. Lingering winter which finally ended giving us a wet spring that has brought out the flowers and especially the beautiful azaleas in our community. Hopefully we have a warm but not too hot summer to enjoy the outdoors. Despite a threat of rain storms, there was good attendance at the annual CHEA meeting in mid- May. The current CHEA Board was re-elected. We were given reports from Prince George s County Council Chair, Dannielle Glaros, the Police Department, the Purple Line and local real estate activity. Details of these briefings can be found in published minutes on the CHEA website www.cheamd.org. Those in attendance also received the updated Useful Numbers List magnet. The magnets will also be available at the fall CHEA fest. WSSC is ready to start water main replacement on seven CHE streets (Hunter, Remington, Southwark, Clagett, Partridge, Eversfield and Wells). Signs providing contact information are being posted on affected streets prior to start of work. Replacement will be ongoing throughout College Heights Estates and University Park for the next year. WSSC plans to add the new mains without removing the old which means there will be a simpler switch over and no need for above ground temporary water lines. Warmest Regards, Ron Browning Preparatory Water Main Replacement Work, Partridge Place, June 7, 2018, Photo by P. Cunniff

College Heights Estates News Election of CHE Officers, 2018-2019 Ron Browning was re-elected President, Chris Oehrle, Vice President, Pat Cunniff, Secretary, Jie Zhang, Database Manager and Treasurer, and Ron Blunck, Web Master, at our May 15, 2018 Annual Meeting. The full list of officers and Board Members with email can be found at the end of this newsletter. Police Report for CHE As noted by Ron Browning in his President s Report, Cpl. Juan Nunez presented an overview of crime issues in CHE and Prince George s County. Cpl. Nunez noted that there was only one incident of breaking and entering in CHE over the past year. He attributed this to the fact that there is a lot of activity daily in CHE people walking and running, children on bikes, owners working in their yards. All of this is a deterrent to any potential thieves. Cpl. Nunez also suggested that residents purchase cameras for their homes. More information on this is available in the May 2018 Minutes on the CHEA website. Purple Line Work Tree cutting and brush removal is currently underway on University Boulevard between West Park Drive and Temple Street. It is anticipated that additional infrastructure work along University Boulevard and through the University of Maryland campus will occur this summer. Lot #1 on the Maryland campus will lose hundreds of spots in the upcoming semesters due to Purple Line construction. Five stations will be on, or near, the UMD campus: Adelphi Road (University of Maryland University College), Cole Field House, Baltimore Avenue, the College Park Metro Station, and the Discovery District. The M Circle will be removed from Campus Drive and relocated on campus. (Conversation with Rebecca Romine, Public Affairs Manager, Purple Line, May 13, 2018; article by J. Roscoe, Diamondback, April 18, 2018.) For Purple Line updates see: www://purplelinemd.com/construction/ Primary Voting Primary voting for Governor, County Executive, County Council, US Senate, US Congress, and other local positions will occur Tuesday, June 26, 2018. CHE s polling station is St. Mark s Catholic Church on Adelphi Road. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Early voting is available from Thursday, June 14, 2018 through Thursday, June 21, 2018, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The closest Early Voting location is: College Park Community Center, 5051 Pierce Avenue, College Park, MD 20740. For further information, contact 301-341-7300. CSX Bridge Work on the CSX Bridge behind Whole Foods in Riverdale Park appears complete. The opening has been held up due to an easement transfer issue and the needed transfer of the bridge and road from the developer to the county. Email, June 8, 2018, with the office of Dannielle Glaros, County Council Chair, indicates that the bridge should open Sunday, June 17, 2018. Photo by P. Cunniff, June 8, 2018.

Home Sale Prices Rise in 20782 Zip Code Jean Pirovic, CHEA Board Member and Long and Foster Realtor, informed attendees at the May 15, 2018 CHEA meeting, that real estate sale prices in Zip Code 20782 have risen 11.7% in Quarter #1, 2018, over those in Quarter #1, 2017. Comparable sale prices for the same quarters were up only 2.3% for all of Montgomery County. More Butterflies The University of Maryland Golf Course will soon have a butterfly garden to attract more Monarchs. This national effort called Monarchs in the Rough provides milkwood seeds to about 250 golf courses across North America in an effort to save the declining Monarch butterfly population. Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa and Salon The Red Door by Elizabeth Arden opened May 18, 2018, in The Hotel at the University of Maryland. For further information, consult www.thereddoor.com/location-detail/collegepark. Phone 301-699-4295. College Park Grill to Open The College Park Grill will open in August on the ground-floor of the new 150-room Cambria Hotel, being completed just north of Berwyn Road on Baltimore Avenue. The College Park Grill will be a high-end bar and grill. CAVA CAVA, a Mediterranean-style restaurant, will open in the College Park Shopping Center later this summer. This restaurant will fill the spot formerly occupied by RadioShack. CAVA will serve fast casual Mediterranean cuisine. (Diamondback, May 3, 2018.) Development on Site of Former Quality Inn In response to a question asked at the annual CHE meeting, May 15, 2018, County Council Chair Dannielle Glaros indicated that the land at Guilford Road and Baltimore Avenue, site of the former Plato s and Quality Inn, was now in the hands of the University of Maryland Development Corporation, and that development had been slower than anticipated. She noted that she would keep constituents informed as to any planned construction. Riverdale Park Station Jersey Mike s and Habit Burger have commenced work on their respective tenant fit-out construction. Both are expected to open this summer. Townhome construction here is anticipated to be completed by the 2 nd quarter of 2019. To date 62 townhomes have sold (Data First Quarter Economic Development Report, City of College Park.)
