38 26. Infanterie-Division (Volksgrenadier) (26th Infantry Division /Volks Grenadier? The 26. Inf ant erie-di vis ion was formed in 935-36 during the expansion of the Army after the introduction of universal military service in March 935. In May and June 940 the division took part in the western campaign. Between December 94-0 and May 94 it was transferred to Lo'tzen, East Prussia, for preparations for the campaign against Russia. From June 94 the division was employed in the central sector of the eastern front and participated in the battles on the Volga River between Rzhev and Kalinin in the fall and winter of 94 and in the Orel area in the spring of 942. The division suffered heavy losses south of Voronezh between the Don and Donets Rivers in the fall and winter of 942, and in the Kursk offensive in the summer of 943.
