The brisk temperatures were made colder with a very strong wind that made everyone appreciate the sacrifices made by the organizers to have a moving program. Certainly the temperatures have been colder at previous ceremonies so all in all, it was seasonable. Lee-Jackson Day is always a special event everywhere and this year the number of ceremonies throughout the country was an all time high because of Robert E Lee s 200th birthday. Throughout the South, observances were held either on January 13th or 20th as in the case of the Baltimore ceremony hosted annually by the Harry Gilmor camp. Front and center in the parade that winds its way through part of the Johns Hopkins University campus before arriving at the double equestrian statue of Generals Lee and Jackson were the Gilmor camp and Maryland Division SCV Color Guards. The Color Guards always look great, with pride and dedication swelling out of every member of the elite units and then washing over every onlooker with reverence. The MD Division SCV Color Guard had been the lead unit at the National Lee-Jackson Day ceremony the weekend before in Lexington, Virginia, which is the final resting place of both Generals. Representing the Military Order of Stars and Bars (MOSB) was our own Don Beck. Don always cuts a fine image in any ceremony and he braves both personal and environmental challenges to participate in almost every event that the public can see a Confederate Battle Flag at. Also in attendance from the Norris camp was Ray Driver who brought along his family, even though they watched from the comfort of the Art Museum across the street. Hopefully, every camp member will be able to participate in these kinds of events throughout the year. As the kickoff to the year s ceremonies, this one was outstanding. Commander s Column Dear Compatriots- We will be going over our budget for 2007 and doing a final review of our upcoming activities for the coming year at the next meeting. We could use everyone's help, so please plan on coming.also- I'm excited to have Theta McPherson Keel return to our camp as the February speaker. If you haven't experienced her talk on natural healing in the 1860's, I highly recommend coming this Tuesday night. Her resume is shown below. Since I had to be out of town during all of the local Robert E. Lee events, I had the pleasure of attending the North Carolina Divisions Robert E. Lee Bicentennial Observance in historic Wilmington NC. This included a run down of all the Confederate History that occurred within easy walking distance of the event, a stirring sermon by the NC Division Chaplin, W. Herman White, and the keynote speaker was Bruce W. Tyson ( NC Division commander). The photo to the right shows me posing with Commander Tyson. This coming Tuesday night we will meet at 5:40 pm at Tom and Rays for dinner before the meeting. Bob Brewer Resume for February s Speaker Theta McPheron Keel, is a traditional Indian medicine woman. She is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Tribe from NC, and a hereditary member of the Creek tribe from Alabama. She is a research scientist who holds four undergraduate degrees and four graduate degrees. She is a Professor of American Indian Studies and participates with the National Cancer Institute on cancer studies related to Native Americans and natural healing which blends western medicine and natural healing with a focus on tobacco issues. Massive Medical Living History Planned For Gettysburg This year, the largest civil war medical living history event ever will take place on July 6-8, 2007 at the annual Gettysburg reenactment, held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This event will be the crowning civil war medical event of the decade! In a rare event, over 100 civil war medical living historians will portray the field hospital system as it actually functioned during the War Between The States. This unique impression will be a part of the battlefield reenactment, not just a side show as in years past and at other reenactments. Robert Urban, the medical director of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of "The Field Hospital," a national civil war medical group, and its members, have been selected to create this historic civil war medical reenactment impression at this national event. Spectators will see a field station/dressing station on the battlefield, where the 1st triage was performed during the War Between The States. They will see the wounded soldiers arrive from the actual battlefield, and then be transported to the field hospital further down the line. At the field hospital, spectators will view pre-op, post-op and surgery demonstrations performed on the wounded soldiers. Spectators will see the wounded attended to in post battle hospitals: the early post battle shanty tent style and the later post battle Letterman hospital tent style. Here, within a space of 100 yards by 100 yards, spectators will find every type of civil war medical impression, from static museum style to live demonstrations performed by real doctors and medical reenactors from all over the country. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 6th, 2007, at 7:00 pm. at the Damascus Community Library, 9701 Main Street, Damascus, MD. From the stop light at the intersection of MD 27 and MD 108, travel east on MD 108 to the stop light at MD 124 (Woodfield Road). Turn left (north) onto Woodfield Road and then take the next right into the library parking lot. Adjutant s Report Minutes of December 5 th Camp Meeting at Damascus Public Library The meeting was called to order by Commander Brewer at about 7:10 PM. After the Pledge Allegiance to the American flag and the salute to the Confederate flag,. There were 10 members and guests attending including compatriots; Bob Urban, Joshua Ford, Bob Jones, Don Bean, Michael Daughtery, Dave Redden, David King, Jr., Adjutant/Treasurer Harold Ford, and Commander Bob Brewer. Our special guest was Marydon Ford. Minutes The meeting was devoted primarily to planning for the Camp events in this upcoming year.. Compatriot David King, Jr. presented a schedule of events and the primary point was that the Colonel Norris Camp would sponsor two major events and participate in others throughout the year. The two events that we will be sponsoring are: 1. Potomac River Crossing on the last Saturday of August. this year August 25 th. 2. Sharpsburg Memorial Illumination on the first Saturday in December. this year December 1 st. Compatriot Steve Gill will be working on our website due February. Rather than giving him a truck-load of suggestions, he will have the freedom to design it as he sees fit, then we will critique it. A collection of 24 flags are available for $1,875.00. This includes poles, sockets and weighted bases. Lee Quotes: In the absence of a speaker at the last meeting, I thought I would put forth some quotes from one of the greatest Americans ever! This year we celebrate the 200 th year of his birth. So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself. Whiskey - I like it, I always did, and that is the reason I never use it. My chief concern is to try to be a humble, earnest Christian. Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly character. With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword... A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others My experience through life has convinced me that, while moderation and temperance in all things are commendable and beneficial, abstinence from spirituous liquors is the best safeguard of morals and health The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He can not only forgive; he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which imparts sufficient strength to let the past be put the past. The education of a man is never completed until he dies. We failed, but in the good providence of God apparent failure often proves a blessing. What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world. You can be anything you want to be, have anything you desire, accomplish anything you set out to accomplish - if you will hold to that desire with singleness of purpose. Northern politicians will not appreciate the determination and pluck of the South, and Southern politicians do not appreciate the numbers, resources, and patient perseverance of the North. Both sides forget that we are all Americans. I foresee that our country will pass through a terrible ordeal, a necessary expiation, perhaps, for our national sins. Medical Reenactment At Gettysburg! (continued from page 4) vices, Christian Commission, veterans reserve, artillery, ambulance depot, general hospital tents, soldiers, nurses, nuns, hospital stewards, there will also be a display of original civil war medical instruments. For the first time, there will be a living history stage where medical demonstrations and lectures will take place every 45 minutes through out the 3 day event. This is a once in a life time event for those who perform medical living histories and for those spectators who enjoy seeing this aspect of the civil war.!!!! THIS IS A CALL-TO-ARMS!!!! All medical impressions and related impressions are wanted for this event! Every civil war medical living historian is invited to attend this historic reenactment event. Soldiers are also very much needed to help portray wounded soldiers and conduct living histories through out the camp. Civilian impressions are very much needed too.
