Wilson receives $10,000 grant from BPSF and 66 FCU It was a normal Rise and Shine Assembly at Wilson Elementary School on Wednesday, May 8, until a few guests made their way into the gymnasium for a special presentation. Wilson Principal, Tammie Krause, was in shock. Boys and girls, we have 10,000 reasons to be thankful today, stated Krause. At the Bartlesville Public School Foundation Educator Hall of Fame Breakfast in early April, BPSF President, Lisa Henthorne, announced the foundation was partnering with 66 Federal Credit Union to provide a grant of $10,000 every year to one Bartlesville school. Both the foundation and 66 FCU contribute $5,000 to the grant. School sites had approximately three weeks to submit their application for the grant this year. 2013 BHS Graduation set for May 24 The Bartlesville High School Class of 2013 graduation ceremony will take place May 24 beginning at 8 p.m. at Custer Stadium. Mrs. LaDonna Chancellor, BHS Principal, said approximately 400 seniors are eligible to graduate. Seniors are reminded that the group picture in caps and gowns has been scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 24. In the event of inclement weather, the graduation ceremony will be moved into the Bruin Fieldhouse. Seating will also be available in the Fine Arts Center auditorium and the old fieldhouse and will include a live big-screen showing of the ceremony. Each senior will receive five tickets for seating in the Bruin Fieldhouse and three tickets for seating in the FAC. Overflow seating is available in the old fieldhouse. Tickets are given to each student when he or she picks up the cap and gown. Cap and gown distribution began May 8. Graduation ceremonies will include speeches by BHS Student Body President, Jonathan Russell, and Senior Class President, Alex Spriggs. Members of the Bartlesville Public School District administration and Board of Education will participate as well. BHS Principal, LaDonna Chancellor, advises parents and relatives to arrive early; gates will open at 6 p.m. Guests may enter through all stadium entrances. BHS Class of 2013: Important Dress Code Information Graduation is a formal occasion for students, and appropriate dress is required. Appropriate dress for males is white or light-colored dress shirt and tie, dress slacks, and dress shoes. Appropriate dress for females is dress slacks or a dress and dress shoes. If dress shoes have a heel, the heel must be at least the width of a quarter. Graduates may not wear corsages or carry purses, bags, or cameras. If you have a question about appropriate dress, seek advice from one of the counselors or Mrs. Chancellor, Mrs. Fouts, or Mr. Jones. Mrs. Chancellor reminds family members they are invited on the field to take pictures after the graduates have been formally dismissed. Because of the artificial turf on the football field, shoes must have a wedge, flat bottoms, or heels at least the size of a quarter. Designated seating and parking for individuals with disabilities will be available by calling in advance. Seating will be limited to the individual(s) and one guest. A BHS parking permit will be required to enter the reserved parking. To secure seating and a parking permit, please contact Mrs. Amen at BHS, 918-336- 3311 ext. 5001. Bike to School Day held at Central Special to The Bruin Neither rain nor clouds deterred bicyclists who were determined to participate in the second year of SRTS (Safe Routes to Schools) Bike to School Day. Thirty Central Middle School students rode bikes from their homes or these elementary schools: Jane Phillips, Wayside, Kane, Oak Park, or the Bartlesville High School individually or as part of a bike train on May 8. Several new bike racks were purchased as part of a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant awarded to Central Middle School for the 2012-2013 school year encouraging students to make healthier food choices and encourage daily physical activity. Computer Science Teacher at Central, Tom Rovenstine, coordinated the event with students completing a form indicating they wanted to participate. Two free bikes were shown to the student body at an assembly before the event to entice participation. Two other essential pieces required to be eligible for the bikes was to wear a helmet and actually ride a bike on the day of the event. Adult volunteers who were part of the bike train included Roxanne Boyce, Mark and Michele Robertson, Andrea Satterfield, Ginger Mc- Cullough, Larry Eide and Tom Rovenstine. Each adult led a Photo Special to The Bruin/Zach Robertson and his parents braved the rain to participate in Bike to School Day on Wednesday. group a students in front and behind the train. The free bikes will be given at a raffle in the next few weeks. Walking and bicycling to school enables students to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Regular physical activity helps youth build strong bones, muscles and joints, and it decreases the risk of obesity. In contrast, insufficient physical activity can contribute to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children and adolescents get one hour or more of physical activity each day. Research suggests that physically active kids are more likely to become healthy, physically active adults, underscoring the importance of regular physical activity early. For information about getting a biking program started at your school or for more information about Fuel Up to Play 60, contact Gale Mills, Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, Washington County by phone at 918-534-2216 or by e-mail at gale.mills@ okstate.edu. BPSD hosts Community Partnership Luncheon Wednesday, May 8, provided an opportunity for the Bartlesville Public School District to honor many of the great organizations that to do so much for the safety and well-being of BPSD students. The Community Partnership Luncheon, held annually at the Will Rogers Complex, brought organizations together from throughout the community including emergency agencies, the City of Bartlesville, mental health groups, non-profits and many other groups. Lunch was served and door prizes were awarded. Frank and Lolas and the Bartlesville Community Center provided prizes and McAllister s provided free beverages.

Boys Tennis named 6A Academic State Champs Bartlesville continued its tradition of academic excellence as the Boys Tennis Team was crowned 6A Academic State Champions earlier this week. In capturing the prestigious title, the team posted an astounding GPA of 3.945. The Bruins are led by Coach Brent Massey. With the achievement, BPSD now has won 11 6A Academic State Championships over the past four years.

No school on May 17 All Bartlesville Public School District school sites will not be in session on Friday, May 17 due to one unused inclement weather day for the 2012-2013 school year. Each academic year, BPSD builds in three to five inclement weather days to the academic calendar. Unused inclement weather days result in days off at the end of the school year. If you are interested in learning about the 2013-2014 academic calendar please visit the BPSD homepage at http://www.bartlesville.k12.ok.us/. Picture submissions for Senior Slideshow due today Pictures are now being accepted for the 2013 Senior Slideshow which will be shown at the Senior Brunch on graduation day, May 24. Bartlesville High School librarian Kim Lashbrook stated, We would love to have two or three pictures of each senior. We would also like to have pictures of seniors from birthdays, sporting events and other activities. To submit pictures via email please send them to bhsseniorphotos@gmail.com. If you would like to submit a hard copy photo, you can bring it to Kim Lashbrook in the BHS library. Any picture submitted must be labeled with the seniors name. All pictures must be turned in by today, Friday, May 10. Please contact Kim Lashbrook at LashbrookKH@bps-ok.org or 918-336-3311 ext. 5012 if you have any questions.

BMHS receives OETT grant for new technology upgrades Special to The Bruin Students in 18 Oklahoma public schools will soon experience learning in new and innovative ways thanks to $40,000 in grants to purchase new technology equipment and professional development for teachers valued at $25,000 from the Oklahoma Educational Technology Trust. Each school will use the funds to purchase items such as ipads, interactive whiteboards, laptops and digital cameras. Teachers will also receive professional development opportunities to learn how to operate and use the technology to enhance learning. The 18 schools receiving grants are: Bartlesville Mid-High School Boise City Public Schools Bristow High School Central High Public School I-034 Chandler East Side Elementary Fort Gibson Intermediate Elementary Frederick High School Idabel Primary South Elementary School Kingfisher Middle School Mangum Edison Elementary Mid-Del Highland Park Mustang Valley Elementary Harding Fine Arts Academy Salina Middle School Stillwater Middle School Yarbrough Public Schools Yukon Lakeview Elementary Yukon Skyview Elementary School Through the OETT grants, we are focused on creating long term change in our schools, said Dr. Jeff Mills, OETT Board of Trustee Chair. Our goal is to improve overall student achievement and learning through the use of technology. Since 2003, 188 Oklahoma schools across our state stretching from Texas County to McCurtain County have received the OETT grants. In addition, more than 6,500 teachers, principals, and superintendents have received professional development training to assist their students with the new technology. OETT was established in 2001 as a result of an agreement between then Attorney General, Drew Edmondson, and AT&T Oklahoma, relating to the company s transition to a modernized form of regulation. As part of the agreement, AT&T contributed $30 million to OETT. The Trust has distributed almost $15 million to date. OETT is administered by Communities Foundation of Oklahoma and the professional development is coordinated through the University of Oklahoma s K20 Center. For additional information on OETT, visit www.oett.org. Madison NJHS Breakfast Special to The Bruin/Madison Middle School National Junior Honor Society members honored outgoing eighth grade NJHS students by holding a breakfast. With the school year coming to a close, the seventh grade NJHS students took time to honor the great work of the eighth graders and wish them well as they move to Mid-High next year. GRANT- Continued from page 1 As they sorted through the applications, one stood out, from Wilson Elementary School and Principal Tammie Krause. Krause was submitting her application on behalf of Wilson to help improve the daily Rise and Shine Assembly. She stated the need for a new sound system, curtains for the stage and other technology to aid with the assembly. The Rise and Shine Assembly is a special event held to start each day, and the better equipment would only improve the already outstanding morning assembly. Wednesday morning, Wilson got that chance to improve their Rise and Shine Assembly as members of the BPSF and 66 FCU presented the grant check for $10,000. On hand to present the check from the BPSF was Jody Burch, Cheryl Cowles, Charlie Daniels, Lisa Kenney and Nancy Megee. Sara Freeman represented 66 FCU. Wilson will benefit for years to come from the outstanding grant contribution. The Rise and Shine Assembly is a site to see each morning at Wilson and the assembly got even better with the generous contributions of the BPSF and 66 FCU. OLYMPICS- Continued from page 1 Quinn.
