State Commander Dear Comrades: SERVE - MENTOR - INSPIRE I am grateful to you all for dedicating your time and energy to being a leader in our Department. Much like on winning baseball teams, our successes will come through teamwork. Each leader plays an important position. Together, we will show veterans, our troops and our communities that the VFW is still the best veterans service organization in the world. My leadership theme for 2018-19 is Serve- Mentor-Inspire. The VFW is all about service to veterans from all eras, service to military troops, service to local communities and service to citizens. Our success as a member-driven organization lies in continuing that tradition of service. Let s serve with honor, integrity and respect for our comrades. Everyone has something to offer, including a unique experience combined with a unique set of skills. When someone new steps forward to help lead their Post, District or our Department, please share what you know with them. Offer suggestions, without telling new leaders that you have to do it my way, unless regulations spell out specific required steps. By being a good mentor, you will help develop the next generation of VFW leaders. Mentors should inspire others. Be inspired to tell others why the VFW exists to serve others and people will get involved. You can motivate and guide others by sharing examples of how the VFW makes life better for people across the state and nation. By serving, mentoring and inspiring others, we can field a VFW All-Star Team that will further advance the VFW s image and our impact as a service organization. Thank you for all you do! Thomas M. Hanzes State Commander, 2018-19 1
