FACULTY OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Outbound Learning Scholarship for Self-financed Master s and Research Postgraduate Programmes - 2017/18 - Guidelines Background 1. The self-financed Master s and Research Postgraduate (RPg) programmes of Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (FLASS) will offer the Outbound Learning Scholarship to promote internationalization and encouraging students integration into local, regional and overseas multicultural communities. Through the outbound learning activities, students are expected to develop their global perspectives and enrich their learning experience, and thus establish an international network for future career prospects. Number of scholarships 2. Full-time students who are studying postgraduate programmes of FLASS listed in Para. 4 below are welcome to apply for the Outbound Learning Scholarship. The maximum amount of the Scholarship is subject to the approved expenses incurred for the outbound learning activities and was capped at HK$15,000 per RPg student and HK$10,000 per Master s student. 3. The Scholarship of 2017/18 is set out below : Programmes Provision of Scholarship Maximum amount for each place Master 7 places HK$10,000 RPg 5 places HK$15,000 Total 12 places - Eligibility 4. Students who are studying Master s and RPg programmes in full-time mode offered by the FLASS in 2017/18 are eligible to apply for the Scholarship. These programmes are : (a) FT Master s programmes: (i) MA in Education for Sustainability; (ii) MA in Mathematics and Pedagogy;

(iii) MA in Music Education; (iv) Master of Public Policy and Governance; (v) MSocScEd in Greater China Studies; and (vi) MSocSc in Global and Hong Kong Studies. (b) FT RPg (i) Doctor of Philosophy; and (ii) Master of Philosophy. 5. The outbound learning activity should normally commence from 15 November 2017 and complete by 31 July 2018 for final year students and 31 August 2018 for non-final year students. 6. Both local and non-local students are eligible for the application. Application 7. All eligible students will be invited to apply for the Outbound Learning Scholarship in late October 2017. Applicants are required to fill in the application form with endorsement from respective Programme Leaders or Doctoral supervisors, and submit to the FLASS office at (B2-G/F-04) with attention to Ms. Tanya Kwan by 30 November 2017. For those activities commence in November 2017, application should be submitted to FLASS as early as possible. There will be second round application in February 2018 if the funding has not been exhausted. 8. Applicants should submit the application form with enclosure of the activity plan for seeking endorsement from the Programme Leader or doctoral supervisor. The endorsed form should then be submitted to FLASS for approval. All activities should be approved by FLASS before it commences. Please inform FLASS of any change on the approved outbound learning activity / organizer / expense incurred, due to unexpected reasons, such as cancellation of the activity and any environmental / political change of the visiting country, etc. Please also refer to the brief workflow for application as set out in the application form. Selection Criteria 9. The Scholarship is applicable to FLASS Master s and RPg students who have successfully participated and completed the outbound learning activities during the period from 15 November 2017 to 31 July 2018 (for final year students) / 31 August 2018 (for non-final year students) 10. Applicants should demonstrate scholastic aptitude and achievement in their respective programme of study. In order to develop students global perspectives and enrich their learning experience, priority would be given to those applications with activity destinations (a) away from applicant s home country/origin; and (b) in different culture with applicant s home country/origin. The objective, duration of activity, potential learning outcome and advantages gained through the activity as stated in the outbound

learning activity plan would also be the core elements for considering approval of the Scholarship. 11. Recipients are required to submit the Outbound Learning Activity Report within one month of completion of the activity together with documents certifying the recipients completion / attendance of the approved activity. The Scholarship will only be granted upon receiving the satisfactory Report. 12. Approval on the application is also subject to availability of funding. Conditions of the Scholarship 13. Recipients of the Scholarships are allowed to hold concurrent scholarships from other internal/external sources. However, each student should be awarded once for the Scholarship during their study of the programme. 14. FLASS reserves the right to check on receipts of payment made on the approved expense items. 15. Recipients who fail to submit the Outbound Learning Activity Report, or change of outbound learning activity without prior approval, all entitlement of the Scholarships will be forfeited immediately. 16. Recipients who fail to complete the study programme due to withdrawal, deferment of study, prolonged leave of absence, or suspension of study, all entitlements of the Scholarships will be forfeited immediately. 17. Recipients are required to attend functions related to scholarships organized by the Faculty, and have to abide by any other conditions laid down by the University. Handling of Information and Personal Data 18. The personal data collected will be used for activities relating to the processing of scholarships and the compilation of the relevant statistics to facilitate review of scholarships. It will only be disclosed to relevant parties for such purposes. The recipients have the right to request the correction of and to request access to the data provided. 9 Oct 2017

If the activity starts in November, please submit the applications as early as possible. Consider the application and inform applicants of the results and approved amount of the scholarship Participate the outbound learning activity as schedule [Note: Recipients (a) are required to pay all expenses of the activity first; and (b) are strongly recommended to buy the travelling insurance covering the whole period of the activity including both days of departing from and arriving to HK.] Submit the outbound learning activity report enclosing with documents certifying completion / attendance to the approved activity to FLASS office Consider and approve the report. Outbound Learning Activity Plan Applicant please prepare (in a separate page) and submit the tentative outbound learning activity plan describing (a) aims and objectives of the activity, (b) tentative brief rundown/ schedule of events, and (c) potential learning outcome to be obtained. The activity plan should be attached with this application form for submission to Programme Leader / Doctoral supervisor for endorsement. Thereafter submit the application to FLASS for consideration and approval. Part IV.
